I remember this thread. It was a shock to learn Texans hate beans in their chili with all their might. I love chili, and I love beans. I see no harm in the mixing of them. Just make sure its damn spicy. mmmmmm... Chili. Damn now i am truly hungry.
Ugh! I linked to this thread from the "Chilis, Soups, Stews, Gumbos" thread. I didn't think anyone would actually bump it! Damn you, Azadre!!
I don't give a crap about your little beans-no beans debate. I only know how I was raised and the chili I was served. I grew up eating flavorful, great homemade "chili" with red kidney beans cooked in a high pressure steam cooker. I also like chili without beans. But, I don't eat a lot of chili any more...only growing up as my Dad was the cook(and a very good one). In my opinion, red kidney beans were made to go in a concoction which can be referred to as chili. But, you'll call it whatever you want if it makes you feel better. Obviously, it doesn't qualify as Texas chili. My Dad is from Charleston, South Carolina originally. Is that as bad as having picante sauce from New York City? NEW YORK CITY?!?!?! SOUTH CAROLINA?!?!?!?
I swear I voted in this thread three years ago, but I got to vote again. Beans do not belong in chili.
Then why was one of your earlier posts the first post in this thread since 2005?? It isn't like you found this thread on the first page of the Hangout, you know?? Anyway, interesting subject - I didn't really care for chili until 2 years ago. Yet, even though I live in Tennessee (which last I checked is in the South), I have yet to eat a bowl of chili that didn't have beans in it! I have gotten used to it but I would love to eat a bowl of authentic Texas-style chili. Thought that Wendy's might fit the bill - nope, too many damn beans in it.
if your a man than you should eat it w/ beans. but i eat it w/ a lil beans. to much are wack, takes the chili taste away and makes me taste a lotta beans
I can go either way but it seems like chili with beans always have a ton of beans in it where I can't get a bite w/o 3-4 in it.
I (shudder) agree with bigtexxx... that Cincy stuff is a vile concoction and an affront to humanity. As to the original question, it is a false choice. Chili does not have beans. If you put beans in chili, it immediately becomes soup. Beans suck up the vital juices and that cannot be tolerated at all, including calling it the same thing as true chili. Meat, juice, and spices. Maybe a dappling of finely cut peppers, a sprinkling of shredded cheese... but the stuff on your utensil should be 99% meaty and juicy and spicy and not the least bit beany.
