Chicago is pretty much the same as pre-pandemic at this point. If anything, the gangs are less powerful than back in 2021. There are still some very dangerous areas, but there are not a lot of them - and the city is as segregated as ever. Now, what is happening is that you have black people from public housing and black people from the suburbs, and there is a stark difference in dress and slang. Being black in Chicago is hard - some whites still think that if you are black, you are from Englewood or Garfield Park and are dangerous. If you are black from Englewood or Garfield Park, you live in an incredibly dangerous area and have rival gangsters trying to kill you - If you are black and not from Garfield Park, you have to avoid Garfield Park or Englewood because the gangsters in Englewood and Garfield Park will target you specifically or you will be mistaken for a gang member until you are like 40 years old. The Little Village area is a Hispanic ghetto, where all of the cartel business takes place, and you have the Latin Kings fighting the Rolling. Really - the group of people that is safe just about everywhere in Chicago are white people, because the gangsters have no issues with white people, and the assumption is that you have money.
I've been asked several times in NO "I bet you $10 I can guess where you got your shoes." The answer is "on your feet", if you want to know the grift. I thought that's where the story was going.
