the DNC beamed anti-Trump/Vance messages onto the side of the 98-story skyscraper—a day before the Democratic Convention kicked off in Chicago.

what a dumb thing to do. yeah let's break the law and project images onto a private residential building (granted with some hotel floors at the bottom), all in the name of the DNC. Lucky for them it's Chicago so no fines will come from the city itself

I wouldn't assume that the city of Chicago will not arrest or fine someone for doing that type of thing.

I live in Chicago - and I have an office there. The city is very different than how right-wing media portrays it. The city allows is controlled largely by the Chicago Police Department and Aldermen. The city is also not as liberal as the sensationalized depictions made in social media and Fox news. The city is more like a European city or perhaps Democrats from the 1950's and 1960's.

The city allows protests - to a point and then it doesn't. Chicago PD will be well prepared for protests. They always board up the buildings, they aways have a massive police presence. They do this for both left- and right-wing protestors.

That's good to hear because it's always mentioned how Chicago is so corrupt, specifically the mayor's office. I've been to Chicago a couple times and never experienced any of this, and everyone was really friendly. Only problem I've ever had was someone asking me what size shoe I wore and I just bought them.

I've been to Chicago before pre-pandemic, I enjoyed it but I know it's not the same as it was before.

But this week seems like it's full of drama

There is corruption in Chicago - but the mayor doesn't really have a lot of power. The Aldermen and Police Department have all of the power. The Aldermen control their small areas of land, and they have a lot of discretion. Then the Police Department can decide whether a mayor gets re-elected or not. They have literally stopped doing their job before and crime goes up and the people in Chicago blame the mayor.

Chicago is really one large city and one small city. The large city is the safest city in the USA and Western Europe. The murder rate is almost zero, the crime rate is very low and the value of homes is very high. This is most of the city, and other than being expensive, it is an ideal place to live because it is a bunch of old neighborhoods with lots of money and civil involvement. The economy is thriving in these areas.

The other area or city is relatively small, about 5-10% the size of the other city of Chicago. This area has an extremely high crime rate and murder rate if you are black or Hispanic. This area is controlled by street gangs that have leaders that are in their early 20's. This area of town is poor by comparison and is bad - and the fact that everyone that lives in Chicago is cool with it as long as the violence stays in those neighborhoods really bothers me.

Chicago is doing very well, as good or better than pre-pandemic. That isn't the case for some of the little towns in Illinois, but Chicago is strong.

and I told them my right size too because what if I lied and it ended up being his size? then I'd have to defend myself and I didn't want any problems with them Chitown gangsters let me tell you. luckily I have family in New Orleans who warned me of this before visiting the NO because there they'd ask "where'd you get your shoes" and I'd just say New Orleans which made them back off. Guess asking for shoe size is the Chicago version of that, but in Chicago they're trying to wear your shoes. In the NO, they just want your money lol

Someone in Chicago asks you for your shoe size - you need to get out of the area. They are not just trying to take your shoes. They will take your shoes and rob you if you are lucky. That is some Garfield Park bullshit. Shoot you and then take your shoes... especially if Jordan's.

Asking that in Chicago is a big sign of disrespect.

Corrupt politicians love "law and order" in the sense of making sure there isn't chaos and protests against things like.... Corruption in the streets.

This is common sense man. Look at the history of corrupt authoritarians. One thing they never go easy on is a heavy handed militarized police force that cracks down on any semblance of a desire to change status quo.

The more militarized your police force, the more corrupt the politicians and business owners at the top are probably. I think that is a safe assumption.

Corrupt politicians aren't risking being arrested for petty theft or vandalism. A militarized police force is a corrupt politician's best friend.

These were some bright red Forces I had just bought downtown. I didn't wear them the rest of the trip lol. we were by the McD HQ coming from a dispensary when this happened which looked like a good area to me. This was also 2021 so things were just thawing out from the pandemic. he also thought better of it.

Chicago politicians, since Daley Jr. left have had no real control over the Chicago Police Department. They have tried to take control before, Rahm Emanuel for example tried to reform the Chicago Police Department and in less than a year had gone from criticizing the department - to essentially defending them and saying nothing about them.

That isn't to say that it works perfectly, there have been times where the media gets video of police shootings, and that has lead to changes at the very top of the PD, but the rank and file have remained the same.

There are good police officers that work for Chicago, but there are also some very bad people working for the PD.

What I will say is that the Chicago PD is very good at dealing with crowds and protests. They spend a lot of time training for it, and they have over the last 10 years gotten better at not contributing to the violence. That doesn't mean they are perfect - they are not, but they are better than they were in that regard.

As for corruption in Chicago - it exists in the same way that the mob exists in Chicago, the lines between legal and illegal are blurred. Aldermen decide what happen in their ward - and that means that some get payouts, but more often than not, they end up getting indirect benefits like other friends of the Alderman will get work from the business that the Alderman approved a permit for.

Chicago puts their politicians in jail as well - and it doesn't really stop the problems though.
