Doing any kind of sales job is one step above being a car salesman. You guys suck on a professional level, but I am sure you're wonderful people in real life.
Being a salesman, on the outside, seems like a degrading profession; to be good you often seem to be fake. Plus money always seems like a concern (commission versus salary). However, I took a Professional Selling class about a year ago, which remains the best-taught and most intriguing class ever in college. What I learned was that one doesn't have to necessarily be booksmart, but just know how to speak to potential customers. By the professor's teachings (he works full time selling premium financial retirement services), cold calling is only a little more effective than mailings, and the more effective routes being through networking and of course referrals. For those who work in sales, how accurate is this? Do you find cold calling as effective as it should be?
I know plenty of car salesmen who make a killing. p*rn stars make a lot of money too, not to mention Mike Tyson and Ken Lay.
I don't sell cars. Never have. I don't call people at home. I don't sell an unnecessary product. I deal with CFO's and CEO's I deal with Fortune 500 companies and made my company over $3,000,000 last year alone. The money that I bring in keeps a lot of people employed. Ever wonder where the money comes from? So basically, kiss my a**
I think there is a pill you can take for that, try Viagra or something... Not really, no. I know where it comes from: a bunch of bored housewives watching the Home Shopping Network. That's the (JVG IS A CAPITALIST PIG) spirit
Not all sale's jobs sucks. Some sale's jobs actually sell products to the people that have interests in them. What did you think the marketing department for big corporations are for? I think what you are talking about is soliciting, like door to door and cold calling. Those jobs indeed sucks.
Tough situation, all of the large Oil Companies have in house retirement seminars so your job is pretty tough. First you cold call, have to get their info if they are within 5 years of retirment than invite them to your seminar and to do that you need their mailing info. Then to actully get them out is another battle. The first thing I would do is break off and get a new group and focus on Exxon Mobil they have a much better plan and those folks (the one's in Baytown) have serious money. See the problem with the folks in the office jobs are two fold #1 they are less likley to deal with you on the phone because they talk on it all day and #2 they are more type A so they have been going to these things for years. Anyway good luck and remember it's a pyramid so if you put in the time than one day someone else will be cold/warm calling folks while you put on the seminars
I inerned last year and did XOM. The guy across the hall from me does XOM baytown. I wish I could do it but its not our territory. The situation here has me not starving.
alexskandalis@gmail.com I'll help you out if I can, I know just about every big group in town who does this stuff
I interned with the Cooper Network last summer at Smith Barney. Very successful. I'm getting it down. I will save your email, but right now I am enjoying what I am doing where I'm at. Thanks for the advice and I know who to email if I am having second thoughts.
I'm good friends with Mark (won't say his last name on the board) and some of the others I just can't see how Andy is worth 50% of all the clients. I respect the heck out of Andy Cooper but I just think with a little practice you and your own group could put together a nice seminar anyway best of luck it's a tough buisness. I have worked at Smith Barney, Merril and UBS so I understand how hard of a job it is.
It is times like these when you hear of people having to cold call and sell people retirement plans that you have no idea if they want or not that makes me appreciate my job. The only people I have to deal with is a few co workers and my boss.
