no conflict of interest here! chertoff consults for the company which has the sole contract w/ the government and is all over tv talking about how we need to have body scanners. i am reading that these body scanners wouldnt have even picked up the 'christmas bomber' or liquid explosives so whats the point?

this article is disturbing on a whole other level. how do you parents feel about some glorified mall cop looking at your kids naked body? guess what kind of work pedophiles all over the country are going to be lining up for now?

furthermore, the airport in amsterdam has body scanners and the guy didnt even go thru one. and he paid cash for his ticket and was able to get on w/ a visa. and he had no baggage. and his father had reported to the u.s. embassy that his son had been radicalized. this goes back to a point i already made which is that just like on 9/11, the failure was on the intel level, but rather than fix that they impose all these 'security' measures just to placate the paranoid public.

its been done incrementally too - first its take off your shoes, get harassed by the tsa jackholes and now a virtual strip search and/or very thorough pat down. they are treating everyone like criminals - and the public is so scared that they are accepting it. i never thought i would see this in the united states - this is the kind of crap you heard about happening in the soviet union.

"blurs the faces and genitalia of passengers"

... um, LMAO. Wouldn't you just need to blur one or the other? Maybe passengers could select: please blur my (A) grill, or (B) junk.

This is the type of capitalism that Bush and gang like. The Bushs have made most of their money from such government action. Of course some Democrats do it, too and it is just as despicable.

If Bush was in, they would go one better and privatize the whole airport security thing and give it to their buds who contributed the most. Only later after they went out of office, would Chertoff have joined as CEO or board member; and either before or after Bush left office the Carlysle Group, the Bush folks love, would have gotten a major piece of the business.

This is capitalism GOP style, while the poor biz school grads like TJ and Bigtexx who worship the GOP, the "free" market and American capitalism make peanuts in comparison.

He really did and still does. For the trivial price of an umderwear bomb he is causing us to spend billions and billions. Of course the GOP-conservative crowd is willing to run with it.

It is sort of sweet to see the Bush-Chertoff gang trying so nakedly to profit off of it.

    i call it fascism.

these people go in and out of government and the private sector - when in government they can formulate and affect policy which benefits companies they either came from or go to work for after serving in 'public office'.

It's Obama, so it's socialist. You can even go communist if you like. Lets keep the name calling straight.

I agree. The government should stay out of the economy.

Chertoff was a Bush apointee, so technically, it could still be fascist.

obama is not a socialist or a communist - he is a corporatist/fascist, just like his predecessor.

I'd rather have body scanners at airports rather than the government controlled health records.

The government needs to get out of the business of bailing out corporations and banks that fail. There is too much potential for corporation.

We should bodyscan all CEO's that received federal aid. Pics required to be disclosed at shareholder meetings.

The outrage over a body scan at an airport is stupid when these same "outraged" people want the government controlling your health care / dictating lifestyles. The later is far worse. But for some reason that's what they crave. Its a joke. So I pay them no mind except to laugh at them. Socialized health care was Soviet Union reality.

Next phase would be cavity searches because the scanners doesn't penetrate deep enough.

this is stupid on so many levels i dont know where to start. how do you equate people being against having their naked bodies scanned by glorified mall cops with people wanting a government option for health care?

nice job on writing a whole paragraph w/out using the word "liberal" though! you are really on a roll!

attitudes like yours prove that the terrorists have already won.

I don't care for either situation becuase they are the same thing. Liberals cant see that becuase they believe their intrusion and control is righteous. That's why I despise them. Of course I equate government enforced body scanners with government controlled health records and mandated lifestyles. Too bad you cant. Hopefully soon the body scanners will start picking up traces of cigarette use and trans fats. Then the gov, scanner companies, pharmaceutical companies and prisons could have a nice fat orgy.

I don't see the conflict of interest. Are you telling me that television isn't the place for pushing products you have for sale? He's not a government official anymore; he's a businessman.

I do think it is incumbent upon news organizations to uncover and disclose his business ties, as CNN has done.

The Soviet Union had some enviable health statistics given the country's economy.

imo, the conflict lies in the fact that he is consulting for a company which stands to directly profit off of his advocating for their product. he is on the news b/c he is considered an expert due to the fact that he is the former homeland security chief. he was touting these body scanners when he was working for the government and now he is consulting for the company which he gave the contract to in the first place. that should at least raise an eyebrow.

in light of the fact that the body scanners wouldnt have even detected the underwear bomber and amsterdam airport had 20 of them and he still got on, dont you think he is maybe overreacting/fear-mongering/terrorizing the american public into clamoring for his clients product?

are you telling me that you dont know the difference b/t advertising/product placement and legitimate news?

and the only reason he is on tv and taken as an authority is b/c of the fact that he was a government official. he is using his position as former fatherland security chief to push his clients product.

this also speaks to the larger issue of the revolving door b/t government and companies that directly profit off the government like haliburton (cheney), rumsfeld (tamiflu) and chertoff.
