wow so this thread turned into Soccer sucks or not I'm a big sports fan but never watched soccer ... but since I work at a restaurant that's 90% hispanics Soccer is always on .. so I tryed watching it ... is pretty much boring and you dont have to pay attention to it 70% of the time until u here the announcer goes "GOL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!" then you turn your head to see who scored .. but that's it
I couldn't care less if people like it or not, what I have a problem with is people threadjacking any thread about soccer to tell everybody about what a terrible sport it is. So do you go into every NASCAR thread and tell them about how boring it is? And I'm still waiting for an example of one of your great jokes in this thread. MR. MEOWGI, magic spray is no joke, it's real. Chris Angel makes it in his basement with his demonic powers.
I think it's just a cultural thing... I think Americans don't tend to like soccer for that reason, not because it's boring. I think the base entertainment level of soccer is there. I also get the feeling (just a feeling, I'm not accusing) that Americans don't want to like it, because the rest of the world does. This is just a suggestion open for discussion, by the way, I don't take it as truth. Kinda like how it is currently "trendy" to hate America in many parts of the world (I don't, I like the USA). I'm Dutch and love soccer. Live it. Breathe it. On the other hand I find baseball, football, hockey all very very boring. No matter what arguments you bring about why the sport is entertaining it won't convince me. It will take some personal involvement I think. That's how I became a Houston Rockets fan. I moved to Houston for two years when I was eleven. I'm still hooked now, over a decade later. I also remember when I saw the film Rudy for the first time I actually thought the sport was a bit cool.
Everyone has their likes/dislikes. Those bashing soccer, it's all good, no one forced you to turn the tv on or read this thread. I find it hilarious that Americans can, with a straight face no less, say soccer is boring but watch baseball and claim it is exciting. You wanna make fun of flopping, let's not even get into the gayest injuries baseball players get.
I agree with the two posters above me. I also think it is a cultural thing. Also i agree with Ace that it might also be a trendy thing to not like soccer. Also when you grow up with a sport it is much nicer, soccer is a sport that you have to watch more often in order to fully apreciate it. and i think that most americans that do not like soccer do not get that chance(or do not take the opportunity). No problem, I really do not care if people think soccer is boring, If you do not like it don't watch it. p.s. Ace long time no see, what do you think about the players Feyenoord got. for the first time in years i'm excited about Feyenoord again
You didn't "grow up playing soccer." Your parents signed you up for a team sport at the local Y and you obliged them for a few years. I grew up playing soccer. I started at 4 and haven't yet quit at 31. I love when people make this argument. Like me saying I grew up playing basketball when I only played for 3 years of my youth. Which would still be thousands upon thousands more than those that watched the Stanley Cup finals. Apparently ABC/ESPN and our own channel (Fox Soccer Channel) says that it's sells better than the NHL. And you probably aren't calling the NASCAR show to chime in about why you don't like NASCAR. Why do it here? I can't stand NASCAR. Know what I do when I see a NASCAR related thread? I don't go in...unless it's one asking if you like NASCAR. I'm all for posting your opinion, which you clearly did on page 1. Did you expect for all of us soccer fans to just agree with you or just ignore it in a soccer thread?
That's the difference between soccer fans and non-fans. When a goal is scored, I rewind for the previous 5 minutes to see the build up. That's where the beauty in the game is. It's so much more than just the ball hitting the net...much like in basketball when the ball never hits the floor on a fastbreak. You see how the passes and the movement created the opportunity. The 2 games are very similar in that respect.
i agree 100%. it seems to me that most Americans dont like soccer for whatever reason and try to justify it by saying its boring, players fake injuries etc. just to clarify a few things for the non soccer fans. the players do not fake injuries. if a player is hurt and play has to stop that player has to leave the field until there is another dead ball situation and in the mean time the team that the hurt player is on has to play without him which puts the team at an obvious disadvantage. the other thing is that the soccer bashers dont seem to realize is that getting slapped on the hand is not the same as gettin kicked in the shin or at the back of the leg with soccer boots. i assure if u were kicked u would be on the ground squirming as well. and yes sometimes the contact maybe overly dramatic, but the same happens in basketball as well. whenever the ball is slapped away from players who are going up for the shot they flail their arms whether there is contact or not (see Kobe Bryant). probably the reason why soccer isnt popular is because it is difficult for americans to support a team that they have no affiliation with. all the major sports (football, baseball etc) are based in US cities, whereas the best soccer clubs are based in europe.
Sometimes you gotta fight fire with fire. The exact moronic comments that people in the states make about soccer, can be made to just about every single sport that is popular here.
Really? I've found a lot of their games to be a bit boring defense-fests, not as bad as Italy of course but not as good as EPL. The reason I've always hear is climate - since spain is genrally hotter than England teams play more conservatively to minimize fatigue.
I've never really thought that about La Liga, I guess it just comes to a matter of preference. I just seems to me that if you watch a random La Liga game it's more entertaining than a random EPL game.
Do you have comcast? If so, how much extra is it for GolTV. I have FSC but would love to be able to watch La Liga and Serie A as well.
I have DirecTV and they both come as part of the sports pack. It looks like GolTV comes with the sports or Spanish pack on Comcast though, so if you have FSC you may have GolTV also.
you're a joke. of course my parents signed me up for the league...most parents do for their kids when they are young...if i didnt like soccer i would have quit way before i did. so i did grow up playing soccer..but i also played other sports...i played 3 different sports...as i grew older i realized which ones i liked more than others.
FlyerFanatic grew up playing soccer and other sports. he likes soccer less than the other sports, therefore soccer sucks. is everyone clear now?
from a spectating stance, it does suck..not very enjoyable to watch on the tube. definitely fun to play though, no doubt. now is everyone clear?
The only reasons a lot of Americans don't like Soccer is because they aren't the best at it. Sorry USA fans. And BTW if you don't like Soccer, don't come into this thread and bash it. Respect the most popular sport in the world and the guys who work their asses off sprinting for 90 minutes.
MEOWGI has decided that soccer sucks because they fake injuries. he may or may not really believe it but it's beside the point. he's the decider.
