I wish I hadnt read this until after all the posts got deleted. Someone want to piece together exactly how the snitching went down?
it doesn't really matter. You are on the Internet. A search engine could find this place as easily as any other. Not too mention this place is popular. For every username you 'know' there are probably 100 lurkers reading. Why would you think this place is safer than any other?
Some snake found a link to his Twitter account through his user name. Contacted his dental school then the local news.
I don't think rez ever confirmed that the news station contacted him, I'm thinking he saw that screen shot of the news station website and got scared.
Because Ive been posting here for many years and never seen something like this. I doubt I'm the only one who felt no one from here would dime on a poster here. I highly doubt he got dimed on from some random google search. It had to be someone on the board.
Summed up for those who were late to the thread... He gave some examples of how he had cheated on homework, etc. during grad school - including an example of a friend copying an exam from a computer and using it to pass the exam and sharing it with him. Also, said most of the people in his grad school, which he identified as Boston University cheated also. Much discussion ensued. The topic was "should you turn someone in if you see them cheating". Some people said no, a lot of people said what Rez did was unethical, etc. He defended it, in way more detail than can be summed up here. Eventually, someone... called Boston University and pointed them to this thread. Rez had a link to his twitter in his signature, and it took anyone who clicked it to his real name. Assumedly, they connected him this way. This person is still unidentified. Someone from the school called him, he talked to them and then told us all the result of that conversation - which summed up was: he wasn't getting in trouble, but was told he should take an ethics class, told they wanted him to work with them on ways to keep this from happening in the future, etc. At this point a lot of people (myself included) started harping on the idea that he should stop talking about it. Next thing you know, SirCharlesFan posted a screen shot of the website from a Boston TV station that you would get if you submitted a news story. Rez never confirmed, but kind've implied that something happened right then. Either someone from the station called him and he deleted everything, or he just got smart and deleted it just in case. The good news (I hope) is that when I look at that news station's news section, there's no mention of this issue. So hopefully, nothing actually will happen there - because that's taking it way way too far - and I was one of the people pounding the guy over this stuff. Ruining someone's life, or attempting to, when it doesn't affect you in any way and happened in the PAST even - is a little spiteful. Summed up - hopefully, if he's not talking anymore and the news people aren't actually involved - it'll blow over now.
So if SirCharlesFan is the one that posted that news submission screenshot, why doesn't everyone assume he's the one that alerted 3rd parties of this thread?
I'm pretty sure it wasn't him because I was the one who pointed out the thread to him after the turn happened.
A professor who knows your name/conducted your admissions interview/gives you a second chance/CE class option would not do that. Also, universities don't like to burn their own alumni.
**** storm, **** storm, this thread has turn into a **** storm/ rezdawg was posting personal stuff from his dorm/ they knocked down the door, and started to swarm/ apparently someone was informed/ he deleted his post so they couldn't confirm/ but it was too late, they had him by the nuts, and the grasp was firm/ but now his image has been transformed/ from rezdawg, to the FFB 2.0 of the forum/
I would also like to point out that I cheated on a math quiz once in middle school. I am now a very successful mathematician who works for the US Department of Mathematics. I've also cheated on my gf with her best friend on several occasions. I am now in a very successful marriage, going on 11 years.
I only mention the google search to point out that just because information is posted 'here', it's in no way seperated from the rest of the Internet. Anyhow, I'm trying to think if I've ever seen a similar situation come up though. Sure, there's been personal information/situations talked about here before, but nothing anyone is going to call the news over (that I can remember).
