Billups can shoot, penetrate, defend, is a true vet, he will bring the best out in martin and yao...perfect championship PG brooks is a lackluster defender and passer, necessities as a pg and in playoffs and to help yao Lowry has a very shaky shot, hurts yao and other players with spacing bc of this billups is old but does not have any of those weaknesses
I think that the mega trade above is a pretty good proposal. Probably a bit too large to turn into reality but I like it. I would just try to keep Shane. Even if we got Iggy, we still need another defender/leader like Battier.
i don't trust brooks with the ball at times, especially when he has erratic driving or over dribbles, but he's still a solid young PG that we're lucky to have. billups would be an upgrade immediately but only for about 3 years.
Gutting the team and ending up with a "big three" of STAT, Melo, and Felton is hardly contender material. Not to mention Brand's contract.
I feel like a lot of you are being really obtuse, no offense. Melo shouldn't come to Houston. He's a ball hog who doesn't play defense nor does he fit well with what the Rockets are doing. Billups is a proven leader even if he is old. And if the Rockets were to get Iguoadala that'd be a significant improvement.
I would actually prefer the rockets get billups because they could probably have to give up less to aquire him since he is older when compared to Melo. Billups is a proven floor general and championship level point guard. He can run the pick and roll smoothly and defend both backcourt positions. Some fans might argue that he is older and more expensive than brooks, but brooks is in the last year of his rookie contract, so the savings won't last long. Others say that he is too old to be a worthy aquisition. He is old, but not washed up. If he was, in fact on the decline he wouldn't be playing for team usa this tournament. At the same time, this Rockets team doesn't have a big window of opportunity due to Yao's fragile physical condition, so getting 2 quality years of solid production from a top tier 2 way point guard would solidify the Rockets position as a perenial championship contender, while with Brooks, fans would have to hope that he sees the floor better and doesn't make any costly turnovers when they are in a high pressure situations. Hill, Brooks, Jeffries and Knicks first rounder for Billups. Potential lineup: Billups/Lowry Martin/Lee Battier/Budinger Scola/Hayes/Patterson Yao/Miller
I agree with much of the rest of your post, but I would say that this is clearly too much - in fact, Billups has a big contract as an aging player, so if anything, if the Nuggets want to start over, they should be glad to be able to trade him for expirings and maybe a second round pick or something like that. Hill, Jeffries, Johnson and Harris and a second-rounder (or maybe our own first-round pick in 2012). And then possibly use Brooks as a main piece in trying to get someone like Iguodala .
Everyone of the trade pieces is an expiring contract/young talent of course they'd go down in wins. If you add the Knicks picks though its a sweet deal for the Nuggs, they get to slash salary and get some good pieces+picks. The trade's actually good for all teams involved. I'm impressed.
The AB, Hill, Jeffries, Battier for Iguodala and Billups 4 team trade is interesting. Billups/Lowry Martin/Lee Iguodala/Buddinger Scola/Hayes/Patterson Yao/Miller That's a better starting lineup than we have now, Billups is old but he just had has highest scoring average ever last year at 19.6 and it's not like we need him to score. A very balanced team IMO and better than the current squad.
Looking at the new squad though it seems we're better served by just trading for Iggy straight up? We don't really need Billups if we can get to keep Brooks
Wish we could, but under the trade scenario Sixers are giving up Iggy because mainly because they are getting Brooks and dumping Brand.
I would easily swap out Brooks for Billups. Billups' five best years in the NBA, including his year last year (20.2) have been seasons with PER's over 20. Brooks' year last year, as the focal point of the offense, with his usage likely never to be higher for his career, was 16.0. For all that we tout Brooks' 3pt shooting, Billups' career (38.8%) is higher than Brooks' (38.0%) and his true shooting% last year was way higher than Brooks' (60.1% to 53.8%) while he had a lower usage. By all measures Billups' has been a far better player through his career and projects to be the better player for the next couple of years also, which just so happens to be how long he is under contract for. And that's before you even factor in things like Billups' superior defense and experience at winning and reputation for hitting the big shot. If Denver's gonna rebuild, then I'd much rather take Billups off their hands than Carmelo. They didn't win anything with Carmelo and Iverson; granted, Melo was more immature back then and AI as we've learned was in the twilight of his career. Specifically though, Billups turned that team into a Western Conference Final-worthy one. I'd gladly have that on my team; at least you wouldn't hear me whining about putting Lowry over our starting PG anymore.
I'd prefer to keep AB and Battier. It would be a dramatic switch to loose Battier and get Billups. Our identity would be amazingly different.
I would be 100% for bringing in Chauncey Billups. Don't get me wrong, I like Brooks, but Billups would bring great leadership, better defense, around the same 3-pt %, more FTs per game, and better FT % than AB. I don't understand how anybody could be against that.
Of course, that's assuming the Rockets bring someone along with him... because giving up Battier in a trade for Billups would just leave the Rockets with 1 SF.
