No offense but that video is OLLLDD. It was posted back in 2008 and I posted that video back in the original 2008 NBA Draft Propsects thread a year ago. Not braggin, but it sounds like you are too rofl Btw, I posted the rare 15 minute high school highlight of Chase a while back and I didn't get any reps
one word. defense. if you can't play D at an nba level, then all the other stuff doesn't matter. hopefully shane can help him take his natural atheticism and teach him how d-up on pro-level.
It's kind of an amazing story that we get these two guys this year in the 2nd round, and apparently they are good enough to deserve contracts like these. Assuming that they actually deserve roster spots, they are turning out to be pretty good for the cap; Chase is getting what, $750K/year for the first year or two? This fits in very well with DM's careful cap space management. He's patiently biding his time, waiting for something good to come along. It's very slow to develop, and is very lacking in texture, but this is as good as most of the dramas we see on TV.
kenwonobi, i am w/U. I am buying your takes. I think in Adleman's hands, Chase will excell & continue to add to his game each season. Again, an amazing contract, 2+2OurOption. If he doesn't fulfill expectations, we're out in 2. If he does, Chase gets a huge payday in the Summer of '13. If he does not, it may end up being the lack of developing a defensive game, as others have mentioned on this thread, but don't count him out and team defense can help hide weakness sometimes. Oh, thanks Les for spending the xtra $, And thanks Daryl for spending it so wisely.
I think Chase has the potential to be a really good player, not just a role player. However, Jermaine Taylor I think won't last very long. He'll be in that category of dominant SG in College which can't handle the better defenses in the NBA and uses his athleticism in College to get by. He performed pretty poorly in summer league...****, even Wafer tore up Summer League. Chase on the other hand was unbelievable...what was it 75% from 3pt land?
Summer league is not a great indicator of future NBA success. Aaron Brooks tore it up, Landry stank it up, Chase did well, Taylor was mediocre. But Taylor had a hamstring pull and he's a little behind the learning curve, according to Morey, because of the college (and its conference) where he played. Or something like that. When Wafer did well in the summer league, it wasn't a fluke. By the time he got to summer league, though, he knew: I'd better pour it on, I need to catch on in the NBA now or I might get sucked out into the vacuum of space. And, uh, drift right through the core systems and get picked up by a salvage ship 57 years from now....? As a fellow Rockets fan, let me say, having only the summer league to go on, I'd also say Chase will be the better NBA player. Although sometimes we get surprised.
Gotta agree with this. JL3 and Aaron Brooks had very similar summer league stats.... one was the best offensive player on the only team to take the Lakers to 7 games. The other... Don't put too much stock in summer league.
I'm guessing there's a lot of highlight reels out there for busts in the NBA. Not saying this guy will be a bust necessarily, but 5 mins of pick-up game highlights doesn't indicate any path to success in the NBA. Is there an Adam Morrison pick-up game highlight reel out there?
The guy is straight-up crap at this point, just a wasted roster space. Personally, I think that Morey may still get rid of him over White.
He may just retire or be part of a trade as a filler but as of now His leadership in the bench weighs heavier then what White would probably offer.
I'm going to have to side with Rocket86 on this one. Brent Barry is an asset to the Houston Rockets whether he plays or not. His veteran leadership cannot be measured and will be especially valuable on a team that will certainly have a "leadership vacuum" next season without Yao Ming, Dikembe and given what has happened with T-Mac over the course of the past year. The term "veteran leadership" gets tossed around a lot, used to refer to any old player on a younger team. But Brent actually IS a leader. He has a great sense of humor and can help keep the locker room a light environment. Plus, this would be the perfect season for him to stick around and mentor Chase Budinger, who is often compared to a young Brent Barry (minus the handles). I truly believe that the team leaders for the Rockets next season will be Shane Battier, Brent Barry and another top player to be named later (Scola? Brooks? Lowry?). Maybe Brent gets traded, but he most likely won't be waived over James White. That move could cost the Rockets as much as $5.1M extra in guaranteed salary and luxury tax. James White is definitely not worth that much, plus the absence of Barry's leadership.
I would never be arrogant enough to completely disagree with you for the sake of my personal point of view, but I do feel that James White at least has the potential to use his athleticism to help out on defense, which could serve as a nice spell for Battier and Ariza. I cannot argue against the results that I saw with Brooks and Barry on the floor last year, but I think that for both Barry and the team, it would be best for Barry to move on in favor of a potential long-term contributor.
