How come Bill Worrell and Matt Bullard ALWAYS have to mention about Chase Budinger as a volleyball player every single game!? It's pretty annoying and irrelevent. They always say something like "Chase Budinger, the former volleyball player." Gosh, we know! Stop repeating it!

If you're black, then you can jump and play good basketball.

If you're white, you need some past credentials like being a former professional volleyball player. Or else everyone will think he sucks.

    ;)

As a former competitive volleyball player you do realize that volleyball at Chase's level is an entire different beast than the recreation one. I used to see Wilt Chamberlain at some of my tournaments back in the 80s, Wilt loves volleyball, he loves playing it and watching it. As great as an athtele Wilt was ,he could never play volleyball beyond the rec league. High level volleyball requires an extra ordinary amount of skillsets that a good volleyball player will spend his/her entire playing life trying to develop them.

I take nothing away from Chase's accomplishments!

It's the same reason why sportscasters keep on talking about Jeremy Lin being from Harvard. It's a code for "Here's the Asian kid!"

I met some American girls who currently play volleyball for a professional team in Europe (two of them quite cute, by the way). One of the girls was at Arizona. She said Chase was not a good, but an AMAZING volleyball player.

If you get annoyed with Bill and Bull then get ready for the day Bud becomes a star and the national media gets a hold of the story...OVERKILL.

Dude that's what commentating is for.. to tell you about the players not just narrate the game blandly.

The best commentating would be mixing up the facts and information given about players. When the same fact is repeated every time, it is just lazy broadcasting. Keep in mind that Worrell et al are paid professionals that should know quite a bit about not just the players, but the actual game of basketball. Now, I'm not asking for Basketball 101 from them, but i think people would enjoy some new repartee or some enlightened points (like when Calvin would correctly predict and then break down the components of a play; or how about reporting on new moves they saw someone working on in practice?; or how about a new play they just heard coach call for that the team just worked in, etc...).

The OP is right. If this were a national broadcast team, I would excuse it, as their audience is broader and probably doesn't know much about every player on every team. Worrell, however, is a local so it would he pretty fair of him to assume we already know something he repeated over 60 times last year.

Oh, and to whomever said to shut up and enjoy the game (intimating to ignore them), I feel for you. You obviously never heard good supporting broadcasting where the commentator actually ADDS to the quality of the program with knowledge the viewer otherwise would not have gleaned. Hubie, Collins, Fratello, Van Gundy, Hearn, Frazier (when he wants to), Murphy (when not crushing cookies), are all examples of guys that were/are capable of adding to the telecast instead of making you want to tune them out and just watching the game. Rucker Park commentating (Steven A. Smith meets Flavor Flav) is the bottom of the barrel, not the cream of the crop...
