Chas really cut his strikeouts down and walked a lot more in his 2nd season. Major improvements. So he hasn’t leveled off to the point where the Astros are certain about what they have in him. He is obviously still improving so far. Meyers #’s in his first year with 150 at bats weren’t any better than Chas’s #’s. In fact his K/BB rate was abysmal. I know everyone wants to believe that Meyers has the higher ceiling, and maybe he does. That has not been witnessed on the field though. It’s all still hope with Meyers.
I don't think there is any doubt that Meyers has the higher ceiling which teams look for in a potential starter. But Chas has a much higher floor which is a huge benefit for a 4th OF. And as bad as Meyers' K rate was in 21 (30.6%) Chas' was even worse (32.5%) Even with the high K rate in '21, Meyers OPS was better (.761) than Chas' was last season in his better year (.738) The hope is that Meyer's highER K rate last year was due to his shoulder and either being unable to swing like he wanted/needed to or had to make swing decisions too soon AND he makes an improvement similar to Chas' 21-22 mark.
like I said, Meyers hasn’t flashed anything that McCormick hasn’t. That OPS is close over a short sample size in their first season. McCormick walks a lot more now and I’m sure posts a better wOPS, which gives on base % more weight than OPS does. There is nothing in their numbers or their defensive play that suggests Meyers has the higher ceiling. Maybe he does, but we haven’t seen anything to suggest it so far.
If Chas learned how to hit righties as well as he lefties, he would be a MVP candidate. There is really no good reason why he couldn't hit righties as well.
I guess Chas listened to me. Chas has been performing like a MVP(not named Ohtani). He even started hitting sliders.
