A fleur de lis means so much more than 'the Saint's logo'. It's like saying the great Seal of the USA does a great job of incorporating the Seal of Imperial Prussia since they both have eagles. If you looked at a picture of an Eagle and called it the Imperial German Seal you would sound kind of silly.
Yep, I have have a blue fitted cap with that logo. The Bobcats logo isnt decent at best. Its almost like they're intentionally going for the college look
It means what you make of it. I know it has been used for a number of things and I am sure RR does too but when I see it I think of the Saints logo.
Exactly when I see it .. I think saints. . .. I know alot of football fans would think Saints. . . . maybe even sports fans . . . . Moreso than the actual origin of the symbol . . . . To me . .it is about communications While folx can point out that it is really this or that Point out the origin etc they have to all admit. . they IMMEDIATELY KNEW WHAT I WAS TALKING ABOUT which is the point of it . . . Whereas . . . saying A fleur de lis . . . may have left more people scratching their heads not an assumption but imo more possible Rocket River
I respect you and your position, so when I say this please understand that I am just trying to communicate what it conveys to me. When I read 'saint's logo' my first thought was, 'who's the ignorant fool'. I know you aren't an ignorant fool, so I checked myself after looking at your name, but what it communicates to me is someone who isn't well enough educated to realize the history and tradition of the Fleur de lis. And two other people who saw it before I did also thought it was a 'misstatement' worthy of comment so I don't believe that I am the only one. So my guess is that you loose some people from either the more educated or least educated end whichever way you choose. At least if you use 'Fleur de lis', the people who don't understand it might Google the term and educate themselves about an important cultural symbol. I don't want that to be as harsh as it is, because I do respect you. I'm just stating what it means to me. Hopefully you understand that I am being excessively blunt to be crystal clear in communicating this to you, rather than as some form of insult or aggression. From my point of view, it hindered rather than helped your communication. And now I've spent way more time being a pedant on this subject than it is possibly worth.
someone make the Rockets "R' logo now with a silver basketball in the background. I wanna see what would it look if we went that route instead of the R alone by itself.
He's only trying to help you broader your horizons a bit by using history or culture to put the symbol into the correct context. Saying the Fleur De Lis only appies to the New Orleans Saints football team smacks of American or perhaps "football mentality" arrogance. Not ignorance, but arrogance because the Fleur De Lis means many things to many people and has been around for ages. From Wiki: Fleurs-de-lis appear on military insignia and the logos of many different organizations, and during the 20th century it was adopted by various Scouting organizations worldwide for their badges. Architects and designers may use it alone or as a repeated motif in a wide range of contexts, from ironwork to bookbinding, especially where a French context is being implied. As a religious symbol it may represent the Trinity, or be an iconographic attribute of the archangel Gabriel, notably in representations of the Annunciation.[2] In such contexts, it is associated with the Virgin Mary. Fleurs-de-lis feature on military badges like those of the Israeli Intelligence Corps and the First World War Canadian Expeditionary Force. They may be chosen for sports teams, especially when it echoes a local flag, as with the former Quebec Nordiques National Hockey League hockey team, the Fiorentina soccer team, the New Orleans Saints football team and the New Orleans Hornets basketball team, and in coats of arms and logos for universities (like the University of Louisiana at Lafayette and Saint Louis University and Washington University in Missouri), schools (in St. Peter, Minnesota) and companies (like the Royal Elastics shoe company). The Madison Scouts Drum and Bugle Corps have a fleur-de-lis as their official logo, with members and past members sporting exclusive fleur-de-lis tattoos. The flag of Lincolnshire, county in England, has had a fleur-de-lis in the middle since 2005. It is also one of the symbols of the national women's fraternity Kappa Kappa Gamma, as well as the international coed service fraternity Alpha Phi Omega.
Is this personal? d*mn near everything . . has a million meanings and history I don't recall anyone stating it ONLY APPLIES TO THE NEW ORLEANS SAINTS You brought that *ONLY* into the convo . . .no one else did [Which is why I ask is this personal? Is this a family crest or something?] There are plenty of ways to point out the alternatives without the arrogance/name calling [calling folx ignorant, etc] Would it have been so hard to say OH . . The 'Saints' emblem is really call the Fleur De Lis DID YOU KNOW it has a rich history . . . check the WIKI Rather than . . .You seem Ignorant . .let me educate you At the end . . . as I stated. . it is about communication If something is football shaped. . I say football shaped I dont give the dimensions of a football It was an expediant way to give people a point of reference they may recognize . . . communication Evidently . . .saying it is the symbol that the New Orlenas Saints use is OFFENSIVE IN ITS EXTREME . . . so . .. Excuse me. . . I apologize for insulting your heritage/sensibilities. or what ever it was that was offended Rocket River
Apparently you didn't understand why I wrote what I wrote and what I was inteneding to communicate. I most specifically did not call you ignorant but rather said that your reputation and posting history repudiates any such calls. I could have used those other words, but I thought that that would be soft peddling it in a way that might not properly express how calling it a 'saints logo' sounded to me, and I thought that you would be able to not take it personally. If I was wrong, and I overestimated your ability to be circumspect, I apologize.
Seriously, though. This is a sports forum, symbols will obviously be referenced to a particular sports team. If you really feel the need to do justice to symbols with historical value, then start a new thread in the hangout and proceed to educate us ignorant fools there instead.
You could avoid those insincere apologies if you didn't have such a penchant for sticking you foot in your mouth.
Actually I did not think you did . .. which is why I did not respond to it. . . accepted it . . .and moved on in fact the convo has gone on further than I would have anticipated or liked considering . .. I was merely attempting to compliment New Orleans on a very nice Emblem choice I think consistance among your cities teams serves as a bit of unity The consistant looking of the new hornet and the Saints Emblem was what i was remarking on . . . . As stated .. . it went beyond what it should have gone I am not offended at all but I felt some folx felt offended . . .and seemed to take it a bit personal Ergo . . I apologized So . . . in summary 1. I apologize if I offended anyone 2. I am not offended 3. The hornets Logo the "Fleur de Bee" - is GREAT! Rocket River . . .can this 'BEE' over?
Who the hell said that the only thing it applies to is the Saints? Check my posts and I never did. I said when I see it I think of the Saints even though I know there is a lot more behind it than just an NFL team.
