I've only met Van once... but he seems like a really good guy.. not many olympic coach's etc would be a good sport about the whole Van On thing
Charlie is pretty horrible. His pessimism is annoying. He, along with Rich are both flip floppers. The way Charlie speaks, it puts you under the assumption that he could lace 'em up and do better than whoever he's talking about. I've seen him, he goes about 5'10, 150 pounds soak and wet and talks like he's some stud when it comes to athletics. He's annoying. I hope this is true.
Well, as far as being an athlete, Charlie was ranked in the top 10 nationally in tennis in high school and early in college before he tore up his knee. The guy does know a LOT about sports. He studies it like an engineer studies schematics. He went to a very strong sports journalism program where Mike Terico was his roommate. He does know more about sports overall than any other member of the media in Houston. It isn't even close.
Wow. A high school tennis player. LMFAO. That's fine Jeff, but that still doesnt give him the go ahead to be so pessimistic and sound like he will always be right. What an annoying personality.
Actually, if I was as right as much as he actually is... I'd develop a little arrogance. Its only natural. (honestly... he's almost ALWAYS right). But, to say he's overly pessimistic is being too harsh.... when the team sucks, he flat out says it (instead of trying to beat around the bush). I have no problem with that. Also, when the team is good... he says it. That's what many people don't hear (because more often than not, the last 3-4 years, Houston teams have not been that great)... but he'll most definitely be the first one to give a team or player its props.
No. When the team is good it usually goes ... "They're this this little tear, but look (insert reason why it wont last here)." Leave Charlie, leave.
Still, when has the man ever been wrong? When the Astros were on their "little tear", he actually looked at it as a positive thing (wheras Rich and Dalati were getting ready to talk football and basketball). If the Rockets start the season 5-1, he'll say that they still have problems... and they did last year. Some fans just don't like hearing that their team has problem, period... but I actually like to see what his opinion is, because it gives you ideas on how to make the team better, not just thinking everything's hunky-dory.
this is not a true statement. By a long shot. We have the "put a fork in them" takes he had. And when they were on a tear he constantly said that it was luck and that they couldn't do anything against the good teams. Again, I have tape. That last week when they stumbled he said, "Oh..I didn't see this coming" with a sarcastic bite that was Oscar worthy. No, he was a pessimist and a fantastic radio broadcaster at the same time.
Charile is by far the most knowlegable person on that station, no doubt. If the rumors are true and he is going to the new station, chances are I will be listening to his show instead of 610 during that time slot.
I wont miss Charles!! I hate it so much when he is ranting and Lord wants to add something and Charles wont let him .. he just keeps talking over Rich. I want to reach thru the radio and bitc# slap him.
Talking over Rich Lord is a good thing. While I'll agree that Pallilo's pessimism was annoying, that guy has probably forgotten more about sports than most people on this board know. I too had a problem with Pallilo acting as if he could do better than the athletes themselves, however it was his objective POV, just like you or I have. 790 AM has gotten themselves a strong radio personality, and I wouldn't be surprised to see a couple more hosts past and present show up at 790.
You registered for this site in May 2002, and then waited 2 1/2 years to make your first post? And then you use that post to discuss how you want to b**** slap a radio personality who you misname "Charles"? I'm shocked and dismayed.
Well Charlie is short for Charles and yes I have a life to the point that I don't live on this board. Hey, but thanks for your valuable insights!
I think proportionately we have a winner in the oldest member fewest posts. 1 post every year and a half? Even Keeley can't touch that. Welcome to the board lurker. IT's a great place! Chance
Watched Extra Points tonight. Charlie now joins Kenny Hand with the "Sports Journalist" title under his name; at least temporarily
For a second, I thought you meant that Kenny would be Charlie's co-host over at KBME... that might be the only thing that could keep me from listening to his show.
