I didn't read it like that at all. Maybe they're changing the format to more 'guy talk' which I don't think Charlie really dug too much.

Aren't Rich and Charlie good buddies? When Charlie left KTRH for 610, Rich was basically right behind him. I wonder if Rich will follow him again.

It was actually Rich who left far before Charlie left (but you could tell he was itching to get away from KTRH... while Rich was suffering with Hand).

And, if Chance's message means they're going to more "guy" talk, please... I don't think "Houston fans" are gonna love that. I just assumed that they're going all local sports all the time (with the exception of Rome), since the Dan Patrick show will be moving to KBME.

You can mix "guy talk" with sports talk.

Hell, Dan Patrick is like 70% "guy talk" now...

Rome is always covering messed up crap that goes on outside of the sports world...

I asked him that via email yesterday. One could only hope

We've both worked with other people. It's not nearly as much fun. We would prefer to remain a team. We'll see how it goes. Thanks for the kind words.

we aren't going to a guy talk format. I was inferring that chuckie tends to take a cynical approach to Houston teams. I'm not saying he doen't like them I am just saying it seems like he doesn't. I certainly want objectivety but not to the point where you question his loyalty and adoration of the teams.

Hmm.... only team Charlie openely roots for: Syracuse.

Teams that Rich openely roots for: Giants, Yankees, Rangers. :D

But, I understand where you're goin w/ this Chance... unfortunately, like many, I feel that "chuckie's" objectivity and unbiasness was one of his best suits.

Not merely a "homer" trying to get you to cheer for the local teams... he called it like it was, and that's refreshing. (for instance, today he would have said "The Rockets were awful last night... but they played the world champs, and should get better... its a long season."; he seems to bash the team a little, but its more unbiased and honest then anything).

Most of us would have stopped listening to him 10 years ago if it was really a problem... alas, his fan base has grown since then.

EDIT - btw, am I the only one who's seen Charlie actually be downright giddy after Houston teams do something good? Everybody remember's his cyicism, but he was ecstatic when the Astros got Clemens/Pettite, and even more-so when the Rockets got T-Mac. Going back to the championship days, he's always "rooted" for Houston... but as Chance said, sometimes it may not be obvious.

I guess one man's cynicism is another man's realism. I don't know who would think Palillo didn't 'like' the local teams.

I don't want blindly allegiant 'Stepford'-hosts who toe the party line and pander to sheeple that only want to hear 'positivity' about their teams -- regardless of reality.

I WANT to hear someone call it like it is, for better or worse.

Remember, he does not work for the teams. He isn't supposed to have the shill-type loyalty that some broadcasters who are employed by the teams sometimes have.

I also don't want him to 'adore' the teams(s) if they suck. Tell me why they suck, what we need to do about it, and hear me out when I call your show to vent.

Talk show hosts that maintain a 'Polly-anish' view of what's going on resemble the sports equivalent to Al Franken's 'Stuart Smalley' character......self-affirmations of how good we are (even when we aren't) just seem disengenuous and intellectually dishonest.

    I'll miss Palillo.

    Just my $.02.

I agree that objectivity is a strong suit. However he too often came off as anti-Houston. I agree with you that he was good. He was AWESOME and he will be sorely missed. Professionally, I hate to see him go. I hate it. that being said I am excited about the new opportunities that have risen from this and look forward to building with the challenge of missing that block. I do not want to have a turnkey job. Now I don't.

I would still love to see Craig Roberts join the crew as I really miss that guys reporting and I think he'd be great on the radio. I met him once at Houstons and he was all class with us sports geeks.

Can't say I'm gonna miss Charlie, though. I'm more of a John/Lance type and jam the XM on my drive home mainly because of Charlie. His huge ego just doesn't fit with my own in my SUV. I need to breath.

    Happy trails. Syracuse blows.

You're right, I got it the other way around. I just remember both guys kind of sounding uncomfortable without the other one around. They were together for a long time on KTRH.

And don't take my post to say I like the 'guy-talk' either. Please stick to sports. Actually I thought having Lance and John doing more guy-talk in the morning was a nice contrast to Rich and Charlie being more serious in the afternoons. Once they tried to convert the afternoon show into the morning show, I think Charlie started getting frustrated.

Of course, only Chance knows for sure.....

That's all we needed to hear... thanks (i'm getin antsy... I want to hear him rip into this pathetic Rockets team as fast as possible).

That being said, Houston has gotta be lacking in sportsradio talent if Pallilo has been the hands-down best guy they've had for the last 10-12 years. Matt Thomas was arlight for awhile, and then Rich, and then you start gettin to guys like Russ Small, Tom Franklin, and the Duker... but still, that's not comparing much.

The new station breeds competition with hopefully breeds more talent. That's one positive out of all this.

the only thing i don't like about the drive-time programming is that for atleast 75% of my trip i'm listening to ads. i mean rich and charlie only had to speak for what 15 mninutes max of the hour? i'm not even kidding.

Like I said before, if it's relief from ads you're looking for, Clear Channel WILL NOT be your savior, lol!

    Craig Roberts would rule...

Have you been watchin your "Sports OFF-Center" on channel 55 (the Tube) lately?

Actually, Craig would be pretty good... I remember when he was on Vandemeer's show, and he came across much better on radio than he does on TV. He seems to mince his words, and stumble a little on live television, but on radio... he was spot on.

Here's how our wheel is supposed to go. Three months ago we changed the wheel and blew up 6 minutes of spots per hour. Those were sold out spots for most of our dayparts that we eliminated to create more talk time. I can assure you that we have one of, if not the, slimmest spot load of any sports station. but I feel you. I wish we could blow up more spots and just charge more for the ones that are left but that's a fight for another day.

What's tough about listening to sports talk is that if you have to make a short trip somewhere in the car and you get in at the wrong time, it is ALL commercials and traffic all the way there.

I've literally taken a trip that took me 7 or 8 minutes, spent 15 minutes inside and 7 or 8 minutes driving back and got all commercials in the car. I sometimes seem to have that kind of timing. :D

OMG I know! We program, as all sports station do, for the commuter. AM in general is poor in office situations so we can't program for the at work listener like FM stations do. The average commute in Houston is 44 minutes (based on 1990 data I think it is more than that now) and we have created a wheel that gives the people the best shot of catching the most show content while getting some spots in.

On a separate note...have you guys filled out the survey in the locker room? Please do if you haven't we really do make changes based on the survey.

Heh, I did the survey...then checked my email 5 minutes afterward...and received a reminder to do the survey.

Oh, and apparently, 620 "tickets" weren't enough to win the Rockets ticket Raffle.
