When Charlie moves to his new station, I assume they'll be giving him a cushy time-slot, with not too many hours, but at the best possible time of the day to listen to sportsradio (4-6, or 4-7). I'll much rather here Palillo than Dalati+Rich at that time... so long 610, and your annoying 10,000 prize packs, your 7 minutes of commercials, your continuous broadcaster advertisements of things such as Hoops inc., today's satellite, and IW Marks (not that the new station won't have any of these... but it has become annoying day-in and day-out on 610). 610 will still be a good source for the games (and maybe some post-game), but if 790 is planning any sort of pre-game or post-game talk, with Charlie, I'll gladly listen to his interviews, etc. (although I doubt the Texans or Rockets would coop. with clear channel). And if the Astros are moving over to 790, Charlie will get what he wants the most... actual baseball talk when the season is in full bloom (not talking about the Rockets talk in Mid-August during a pennant race... you could tell that Charlie would get annoyed at somebody calling in to complain about JVG when the Astros were 1/2 a game out of the wild card).
haha... touche.... I was just thinking that he'd get to set the terms of his new deal.... like he wouldn't want the 7-8 time slot, when most games start (and most people have already reached home), and thus far less people really care what's on the radio at that time. And I know he wouldn't want the old 5-9 spot that he used to have with 740... that was a little overkill. Honestly 2 hours is plenty enough time for open-line on a sports talk radio show, and 3 hours if you have a guest for one of the hours.

Heh, actually, I had sent Rich an email a while back when him and John McClain were looking for the pics that disappeared off the website. I just went back and checked my sent folder.
He's a man that knows his stuff (for the most part), but I can't stand his attitude. He's definitely my least favorite on 610. Pugs
I think it was done during Matt's show...but I didn't listen to Matt's show regularly til last year...so I'm not totally sure.
With all due respect, there's no way Charlie would be able to provide better pre/post-game fball or basketball talk than what 610 provides now. Baseball might be different, but I've always considered Granato & Delati to be the Astros inside info/insight guys. As for the annoying promos, if the way Milo shills for 740 is an indication of how things will be on 790, I'll take my "Trailer Wheel & Frame" jingle over having everything known to man sponsored & pimped out every 30 seconds. Milo: ?This is Milo Hamilton, sponsored by Truluck's, here to present the Tony Mandola Astros baseball call-in show, with my guest **** sponsored by Landry's & Gold Bond Medicated Powder... You get the picture. Same ad crap, different station.
Well, essentially, Charlie and Rich were the ones that have done the pre-game and post-game for the Texans since their inception... and while there's really no pre-game for basketball, their show has always been the one that "sets up the game." As for the day after "opinions" on how the game went, nobody offers a more unbiased, straight to the point, and inciteful view than Charlie. Granato and Dalati are okay, but they tend to get wrapped up into one single play, one bad player, or one bad call (that probably didn't have that much to do with the outcome) and just ride that till the end... it gets old. As far as "inside info", Dalati interviews the Astros because they normally don't want him anywhere near a microphone, so he's always the one "at MMP." I hardly think he's the "source" that a high ranking guy like Richie Justice is.
David is a skilled and respected reporter. He doesn't cut loose on shows like he could (and I mean he TOTALLY COULD!!!) because he is protective of his opinions. He has to be to maintain the integrity he has built with 20 years of reporting on the Astros, rockets, Oilers, and Texans. On the other stuff I cannot speak right now. I feel like Kerry..."I have a plan. It's a good plan. It's good for the listeners. Good for the station." But I can't share the plan yet. It is underway and most of you will be very pleased. To the Palillo loyalists...you won't like our plan. To Houston fans, you will love it.
And a cool guy. I tried to e-mail you, 3 of the guys from Last Comic Standing want to come into the show tomorrow. E-mail me at cop2comic@aol.com and tell me what you think.
This isn't a pro-David or anti-David comment, just a general observation: Doesn't the above statement demonstrate the difficulty in a journalist-as-talk-show-host position? Can you maintain journalistic detatchment and still be an entertaining host? Doesn't the one take away from the others? Is that why the Kenny Hand / Ed Fowler "Sports Reporters" show years back sucked? I'd much rather hear guys on the radio who aren't afraid to pull punches when it comes to their opinions. I know some national guys pull off both jobs well, like Kornheiser before he retired the radio gig, but then again the focus of their journalism (local) and talk show (national) are different.
I guess that means Charlie won't be stayin in Houston... am I the only one who sees this in his meesage?
I met Delati at the Super Bowl pre-game stuff at Sherlock's. Really nice guy and I've always enjoyed listening to him.
Chance, Tell Delati to cut loose! Hell, it works for Richard Justice. Ummmmmm, on second thought... Anyway, Palillo, Hand & Dukes + a smattering of the same tired ESPN crap won't do it for me. Maybe they'll have the edge in Astros talk, but that's about it. Crap, I'll listen to 610 alone b/c of the coverage of other sports (soccer, boxing, etc.) that the 740AM guys & ESPN Radio NEVER hit on. As satellite radio starts getting bigger & bigger, things like ESPN Radio will become useless on local AM Radio. If local AM wants to survive, they'll have to cater to things that big sat radio doesn't - namely local coverage, an area I think 610 & it's people have wrapped up pretty well. Since I got Sirius I don't listen to ANY normal band radio station EXCEPT for 610 - and that's ONLY b/c of their local coverage. I suspect that this trend will grow.
Ohhhh, okay well isn't a New Yorker - maybe he's going back! Maybe this means Laura reynolds will be a single woman again! Wooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo!
