    What footnote?

    Are you referring to this:

Could be that Yao Ming's career might be a tragic echo of another big man whose greatness was curtailed by foot and leg miseries — Bill Walton.

If so, that's Rosen referring to Bill Walton.

I just sent this to New England Baptist Hospital. I urge everyone to write them on this until they give someone a severe scolding.

Yep, it appears Charley indeed got busted! His journalistic integrity just took a major nosedive. Nice try, Rosen!

Rosen better hope he doesn't get Team Yao's "Attention" or he's gonna be facing a "Defamation of Character" suit.

ok yao is 7ft 6 weighing over 300lbs so that lower leg and feet of his is carrying lots of pressure normally. Yao was knocked out by a tim thomas falling/rolling on top of his knee and nothing to do with all that bullcrap "giantism." He looks porportional, his legs are pretty big and so is his upper body and yao doesn't look like a walking stick. In fact both yao's mom and dad is freakin tall so its part genetic. That doctor should stfu and stop commenting about yao when he doesn't know crap other than he is 7ft 6 and taller than other ppl

I really don't think this guy knows what he is talking about. First off, it's not "giantism". It's "gigantism". Obviously Yao is a giant. This is taken from wikipedia...

"The term has been typically applied to those whose height is not just in the upper 1% of the population but several standard deviations above mean for persons of the same sex, age, and ethnic ancestry. Typical adult heights of Americans and Europeans to whom the term might be applied are 7'6 - 8 feet."

If you want to read it go here...

Please stop posting anything about the no.1 Rockets hater Rosen, maybe, except his death.

Such a loser, this is insulting, it's go beyond normal trash-talking and team-bashing.

Rockers should sue his ****ing ass.

You seem to have left out the last sentence of the paragraph you quoted. Here is part you left out:

"The term is rarely applied to basketball players and those whose heights appear to be the healthy result of normal genetics and nutrition".

Yao's height IS a result of normal genetics and nutrition. Not "Pituitary Gigantism". Yao may be a giant "in sheer size and stature", but not a Giant "Medically" as a result of his Pituitary Gland.

    Here is the full paragraph:
    http://www.wrongdiagnosis.com/g/gigantism/intro.htm

    Definitions of Gigantism:

The condition of abnormal overgrowth or excessive size of the whole body or any of its parts. - (Source - Diseases Database)

Excessive size; usually caused by excessive secretion of growth hormone from the pituitary gland

There is no precise definition of the degree of height that qualifies a person to be termed a "giant." The term has been typically applied to those whose height is not just in the upper 1% of the population but several standard deviations above mean for persons of the same sex, age, and ethnic ancestry. Typical adult heights of Americans and Europeans to whom the term might be applied are 7 - 8 feet. The term is rarely applied to basketball players and those whose heights appear to be the healthy result of normal genetics and nutrition.

Did Eaton show as much dexterity and mobility with a base the size/strength of Yao's? I think not. Manute Bole and Shawn.. did not move, and those knees were as briddle as any twig, with boney legs to match. This is really a non-issue. Yao Ming's height, weight in such a well proportioned structure and dexterity is unmatched. There just is no one to compare him to about this.

I am a doctor and Yao does not have gigantism as a result of pituitary disorder. If he had it he would have acromegaly by now.
That article qoute the effect of pituitary disorder and does not have anything to do with Yao.
The guy from Russia who want to enter the draft 3 years ago has pituitary disorder. And if you guy remembered, he was detected about his disease before the draft and withdrew from the draft. If Yao had it, I imagin that it will be detected before the draft as well. It is very striking for a doctor that you should checked for pituitary disorder in a very big guy.
I am upset that this doctor just give his opinion out of the blue and label Yao as such.
It sound like a discredit to Yao and his family.
His father and mother are big, why can't he is naturally big when he has better nutrition support than his parent.

Well, this dumb@$$ Charlie Rosen should at least learn the lesson from the embarrassment of another Chinese reporter, Zhu Jun, of Basketball Pioneers who had to come out to issue a public apology August 2005, for reporting (on just a single paragraph) about Yao Ming had been a victim of gigantism when he was young.

    http://news.xinhuanet.com/sports/2005-08/26/content_3408417.htm

Zhu Jun wrote an article about Sun Mingming, and in his article, he also mentioned Yao Ming had Gigantism when he was young, but was put under medical control.

Team Yao came out to rebuke the article, and Zhu Jun could not produce any evidence, and therefore had to issue a public apology.

Both Yao Ming's parent and the Rockets team doctor confirmed that Yao Ming had never had Gigantism, and had never been under any medical control to cure or prevent Gigantism.

Yao Ming felt regrets for such unfactual reporting, and earnestly urged all media/reporters, when doing reports/articles of athletes, have to based their reports/stories on facts, by doing more researches and fact findings, and refrain from fabrications based on subjective opinions or unfactual information.

I think Team Yao should do the same thing on this dum@$$ Charlie Rosen. IMHO, his claims/allegations in this article are more serious than what Zhu Jun wrote.

A Yao, if by chance you're reading this thread, just bring this up with Yao Ming and Team Yao and ask them to take legal actions against this Charlie Rosen, and whoever that Doctor Tom Winters is for libel damages !!

    I am with you pryuen.

A doctor cannot just label a person with a disease without examine him/her. It is unethical. Team Yao can also send a complain to American medical comittee and have them look into the case.
He should do it so it can prevent the incidence like this in the future.
As for him being lable as such may effect his carrier so he have a right to complain and sue who ever said it.
