Damn right. He's still a hero because nothing is certain that you would have done what he did when given the opportunity. Hell, people have probably shrugged their own opportunities off as if nothing really happened. It doesn't change what he's done in the past, but our deification of the idea of what a hero should be clouds what we can already do but don't. All that's left is what you see in the media, responsibility shifting and petty judging devoid of substance to cover a stupid news cycle. I've been reading some grisly headlines about what happened to the girls. Those details are not something I wanted to know or associate with them. I don't mind the attention he's getting when I think about it that way. Knowing you have support from wellwishers is nice, but I personally would want to have the chance to regain some semblance of normalcy if I could ever overcome the circumstances of that tragic hellhole.
Good grief, this guy did a decent thing and good for him, but what kind of world do we live in when responding to a neighbor screaming for help makes one worthy of distinction and hero status. That's a standard of basic human decency we should expect from everyone. As Chris Rock would say, he did what he was supposed to do.
I don't think anyone but maybe the media is calling him a hero. He even deflected some of the praise himself and when asked about reward money said it should go to the girls.
One could say the same thing about soldiers. . . . hell if you wanna be a dick about it . .. you can say there are even PAID to do what they do . . . Rocket River Common courtesy and decency are not that common these days
There's a minor difference between getting shot at and helping someone open a door so they can escape.
we are living in a world where people rather not get involved, than to help. he was there right place, right time.
