Well, they haven't done much by winning the first game of the season the last two years... maybe they're giving losing it a try. This is a weird feeling, though... its the first time that I've probably been this upset after a Houston NFL game since the Oilers lost to the Chiefs and Montana in that playoff game. I still don't like the feeling, but its cool to experience again... in a weird sort of way... UGH!
Probably because the Texans were picked to romp on the Chargers by every fan, writer, and broadcaster out there.
Carr's ability to make decisions in pressure situations is very bad. I was looking at his QB rating for the 1st two years. Why the heck is his QB rating so low? Watching this game from kickoff to the end showed me why Carr had earned such a low QB rating on par with guys like Tim Couch and his counterpart on the field, Brees.
Choooooooooooooooke. How many ways can you give the opposition to just take the game from you? Even the Chargers will eventually take advantage.
Carr did almost nothing in the 2nd half. If this is the coaches' fault, I can see something happening after the season, but Carr's QB rating in the 4th quarter last year may have been the worst in the NFL among starters. When Brees threw that TD to Parker, Carr needed to come back with some good QB play. He didn't.
A lot of media people are starting to pick up on Carr's lack of natural QB "instincts." He's definitely very athletic, and he's got a cannon for an arm... but sometimes he just doesn't make the right play... whether it be throwing it away to avoid a sack, or just letting the ball fly smooth and easy. From watching him, his windup looks very mechanical, and it seems that unless the play is executed perfectly, he'll have problems improvising and getting something done. His career is still very young, so hopefully he won't be seeing Steve Francis/Jeff Bagwell treatment in here... but normally, this is around the time where players either "get it" and blossom (Chad Pennington), , or start to fall back on all sorts of promise (Tim Couch, Brian Greise, even maybe Jake Plummer).
I've cooled down a bit...looking at it rationally now... TOs killed us, but our D was like a sieve, and our offensive playcalling was too predictable. I thought we made great strides last year in mixing it up between pass/run. On the defensive side, I understand that we were looking to contain LT, but once Gates started getting hot, we could have used a LB sticking on him on every play, like a spy on the QB does. There was absolutely no excuse for him getting, what, 8 receptions for 120+ yds? Absolutely horrid implosion in the 2nd half...almost like the Saints game last year...except this was one game we should have won.
In other news around the league: Charlie Rogers RE BROKE his collarbone. So far, it seems like the Texans are winning the Carr/Johnson vs. Harrington/Rogers battle, but its almost by default.
This might be a long season. There is a good chance we start the season 0-4. Davis looked good but turning over the ball in the red zone is uncalled for.
Nice post... Carr had one play where he took a sack trying to outrun a corner; he should have just flipped it out of bounds as he was about five yards from the sideline, I'm not trying to start a pile on but I do have some questions regarding Carr and I think for the most part your statements were dead on. Another thing, aside from the one sack by Wong, we had little to no pressure on Brees, he is a bad QB and he ripped us a new one. The defense has got to start getting some pressure on opposing QB, I did not see enough all out blitzes and Eric Brown could soon replace Matt Stevens as my least favorite Texan.
Hilarious! Dominick Davis fumbled the game away today. Both times times cost us. Why isn't Andre Johnson getting the ball more? Is he gonna have to go the Keyshawn route on Chris Palmer? Just throw him the dam ball!!! I really think he's gonna turn out to be one of the top 5 or so receivers in the league, but it won't happen if he doesn't get a chance. I know all the screens and such were working well, but spread the ball around some more.
The bottom line is that turnovers killed us today. I have been calling for Chris Palmer's head for some time now, and today perfectly exemplified his poor playcalling. Chris Palmer has done a piss poor job and needs to be fired. Also, bad call by Capers on 4th and goal from the two, should've gone for it; way too conservative in that situation.
