We will need several senior vets to help cool the locker room, I don't count Harden as senior enough but hope he will have good influence on Lawson. I cannot remember if Thornton does wears a headband, I was thinking he did occasionally.

It's very crucial that we add Terry, he's going to be the glue that keeps everyone together and on the same page. Especially with losing Smoove, we need a great locker room presence a guy who will keep the peace and make sure the team doesn't get complacent.

Add in Chuck Hayes with Terry, and now we have a solid vet presence in the locker room. Unfortunately for Chuck, I think that's all he brings. His abilities have caught up to his limited basketball skills. Torn between Allan Williams and Chuck Hayes for the emergency big spot.

I'm not sure why ppl assume Chuck lost a step. He probably just wasn't fully motivated playing in Toronto. Chuck needs a defined role as a defensive stopper. As long as we use him right, he can be effective for us. Especially against the Spurs & LAC

With the minimum, we could shove Terry in ice and thaw him out 10 games left into the season.

What are the details to work out?

Don't get it either. It's surely a vet min deal.

They might be trying to sign him to a bigger contract with most of it unguaranteed. Possible trade chip later on. Also the starting salary has to be small enough to allow the Rockets to use the 150% salary matching rule for the Lawson trade.

^^ listening to the podcast by Clutch and BimaThug with the deals for KJ and Lawson it seems like things will have to be done in a very specific order to make the numbers work. One of the things was to make sure that Terry's rights are renounced so his cap hold goes away so the Lawson deal can be done and THEN the KJ deal and THEN Terry being signed. There is a lot of fluidity and an exact order of operations that need to be done. Remember earlier the league had to give the Pacers a do-over because they did things out of order and didnt have the space that they should have had

If I'm Terry I'm asking for a no-trade-clause. Morey doesn't hand those out but for a veteran you can just cut if needed I don't see why he wouldn't oblige. Terry isn't taking the biggest number we can reasonably offer just to serve as trade bait.

He can ask for it but what leverage does he have? He isn't in high demand and on the wrong side of his career. While I may be wrong I can't imagine Morey locking himself in just to have Terry.

Can't sign him to a bigger contract if their releasing his cap hold. They won't have the rights any longer to give him anything more than the vet min.

Terry will undoubtedly get (the equivalent of) a no-trade clause. Assuming he gets a one-year deal (or even a two-year deal with a player/team option for Year 2), he'll be a One-Year Bird player, meaning that he can veto any trade. This right is granted to any player on a one-year deal who would have Bird or Early Bird rights if he stays on his current team but would lose them if traded. It is automatically granted to the player under the CBA. It cannot be negotiated away.

I meant a bigger contract than the veteran's minimum. Something like $5 million with most of that unguaranteed.

Bima: Would this be possible and still allow the Lawson deal to go through as reported?

There is no way Morey would trade Terry unless Terry wanted it. That would be a terrible precedent to sign a vet FA and then trade him to a non-contender when the only reason he signed with you is because you are a contender. Not worth bad press/rep Morey would receive. It is curious though what details they are trying to iron out. Maybe just doing everything in order and not something specific to Terry's vet min contract.

I am sure he wishes he could do things like this but our Morey has come along way and has learned how to treat players especially vets. It seems he was not worried about Smith signing elsewhere as much as we were or else he would have been more obliging to him. Knowing he had Lawson in his back pocket made Josh expendable and we have enough poor free throw shooters as it is that we can't afford another one playing heavy minutes.

It is still somewhat unclear whether Terry's cap hold counts towards the Rockets' team salary for purposes of salary-matching in trades. Larry Coon's FAQs state that it would be; but others who I trust had some conflicting information. So, for now, I'm going with Larry Coon on this.

Therefore, I think (barring some unforeseen additional roster move today) the Rockets CANNOT offer Terry more than the veteran's minimum and still be able to match salaries as they have in the Lawson trade.

Also, I doubt Terry would take a mostly non-guaranteed deal even if it were possible. He knows that would likely make him trade-then-waive fodder in December/January and that he'd never see that money.

In order to be eligible for a no-trade clause a player has to have played in the NBA for at least 8 seasons and has played for the team with which he is signing for at least four seasons.
