I think Jalen will end up on the second team. And I hope he uses that as motivation next year. Second years can be tougher than rookie seasons as defenses adjust, and he'll command a lot more attention from teams than he did this season. I'd like to see him have the same aggressiveness he ended this season with to start next season, and develop as a player who can play through double teams and not just pass out of them, put additional pressure on defenses, and become truly prolific. I think he'll get there if Silas doesn't screw it up.

I disagree. I think Jalen was very popular coming into the league, then the bad start to the season, everything turned on a dime. All of a sudden people were tired of people posting Jalen's dunks if he was having a bad game and calling him a bust after 40 games.

all this bullshit is narrative based. Look at how dominate Harden was as a Rocket and how they hated him for it. Hoping Jalen will be as dominant as Harden once was, because it will be an uphill battle to get out of this media quagmire of hate.

i mean they trying to put Herb jones above Jalen who was scoring 30 nightly.. HERB JONES!!!

I dont know if you're joking.. but I'm not even going to lie, when I saw Jalen signed with Adidas.. I was like damn.

If I was an NFL athlete, I would irrationally stay away from Madden covers just to prolong my career.

If I were Jalen, I would switch to Nike just for the added boost.

Wow, just saw Simmons' comment on Green making the rounds. What an idiot, he's going to regret that.

Jalen won't let this era survive long, he's no T-Mac.

Are we really getting up in arms over an All-Rookie team selection? Who remembers this stuff years down the road?

Here's the comparison between Herbert Jones and Jalen Green, putting team record out of the picture:

    Herbert Jones: 78 games, 29.9 mpg, 15.7 pts/100, 6.3 reb/100, 3.5 ast/100, 2.7 stl/100, 1.3 blk/100, 2.1 tov/100, 57.3 TS%, 12.3 PER, .096 WS/48, -0.5 BPM

    Jalen Green: 67 games, 31.9 mpg, 25.8 pts/100, 5.0 reb/100, 3.9 ast/100, 1.0 stl/100, 0.4 blk/100, 3.0 tov/100, 54.7 TS%, 12.5 PER, .015 WS/48, -2.9 BPM

Just looking at the individual numbers, I don't see either player having a clear advantage over the other. Green picked it up significantly in the last month and a half, so that's what we're remembering. We're also focusing on what we project him to be in coming years and his higher ceiling.

But looking at metrics for the full season, it's no outrage for a voter to put Jones over Green on this team. I also disagree about winning not being a factor whatsoever. Playing a significant role on a winning team should always count for something. Even for rookie awards.

And -- Bill Simmons curses on his podcast all the time. This came across like a joke where he's playing the over-the-top grumpy old man character -- like the "F them kids" Jordan meme. I'm certain he doesn't harbor ill feelings towards Green.

I think a lot of people are upset about advanced stats that have to do with how good your teammates are suddenly being taken into account for all rookie teams. By just counting stats Jalen is head and shoulders above Herb. Leaving him off the first team is absolutely an outlier given other high scoring rookies. When was the last time the 2nd highest scoring rookie was left off 1st team? Others have already pointed out other high scoring rookie first teamers with poor advanced stats.

I don't really care about all rookie teams, but it's understandable why some Rockets fans feel upset and slighted at the line randomly being drawn for Green and not other rookies, like Cade and Franz.

I don't mind other picks, but to say "F....Jalen Green" that is straight up unprofessional.

His argument is stupid because basically every ROTY in the past 10 years except for Luca, and Ben Simmons were on objectively bad teams. Yes some of those teams were in the 30's in wins instead of the 20's, but it's ridiculous to say that they were playing meaningful winning basketball. Ben Simmons was such a fluke because of Embiid's injury years where they weren't as un-talented as their record showed the year prior that got them at top pick.

The point though from all of this is that the Rookie of the Year award is basically a popularity and hype award in the end. It's an award given to someone like Blake Griffin who comes into the league "wowing" people, and getting lots of highlights on ESPN. I'm guessing if you dug into it, there is a huge correlation between highlights on ESPN and ROTY winners.

But yeah if Jalen Green was on a 20 win Celtics team, my Podcast feed would be half full of BS report podcasts on the Celtics and Jalen Green for sure. He'd never shut up about how great that team is going to be in a couple years, and doing fantasy random trade thread theorizing about the next star that's going to sign with the Celtics to go play with Jalen Green. I think he just thinks of the Rockets more than anything as a Hinkie level tanking team, and he was saying "F Jalen Green" more as a statement about giving awards to a tanking team.

FYI I'm happy for the Rockets to have won the award for most blatant tanking team in sports. A title I was happy to bring home this year. The media people just hate it just like they hated on Hinkie for years.

DET pulled all their starters six mins into one of their final games and hilariously still won. OKC and Portland were much more blatant imo in regards to tanking.

An “advanced stat” like PER is not giving a player a boost based on how good his team is. You could maybe argue that for plus/minus stats or win shares. Even BPM is using basically only a player’s individual counting stats as inputs, AFAIK.

So, no, I don’t think Green is head and shoulders above Jones on an individual statistical basis — unless only looking at scoring.

And I’d reiterate that playing a significant role on a winning team should count for something. I believe the Rockets were 8-7 without Green playing, which means they were 12-55 with Green playing. That’s like a 15 wins pace. I am totally fine with rewarding the “role player” who likely contributed more to winning, particularly when there isn’t a decisive statistical advantage favoring one side. Also, Jones played nearly a complete season. 78 games. That’s a pretty big accomplishment in itself, these days.

I think Jalen should’ve made the first team over Jones and also even Franz. I might’ve put Giddey over both too.

But I don’t have any real issue with Simmons’ rationale. Herb Jones was helping his team win games and make the play-in and for a big part of the season Jalen was not only winning neutral but a big part of why the Rockets were losing.

You also can’t look at historical precedents. This rookie class is loaded and everyone can come up with their own rationale as long as there is a rational basis for it.
