And I wonder if the analysis has been done to determine if an effective mid range threat increases team 3 pt and post efficiency.
Yes, there are 30 GM's in the league and all of them allow at minimum 50% fewer overall midrange jumpers than in the 2000's or before. They have access to all the data in practice and games, and the humongous majority have dramatically reduced their usage of midrange, some more than others. Popovic sacrificed a whole season (last or the one before) being stubborn about it, ramping up his midrange and reducing his 3pters as though he would gain a mismatch or surprise advantage. He didn't, the team had a below expectation season as everyone predicted. That's one of the greatest coaches ever. All the offensive efficiency stats are up in this era. It's more efficient to take fewest number of midrange jumpers, unless there's an exceptional historically elite mid range player who can make those shots from ISO. Otherwise, imo, it's a bail out shot to be used in tough games or end of clock when there's no other clean option. Like betting on yourself since you know you can create the spacing in mid range and it's all about shot making. I was never comfortable Harden taking that shot and he's one of the greatest scorers of all time. He was well below 50% from mid range and never got fouls there, it was MUCH less valuable than every other shot he'd take. He was not elite or even in the top 20 midrange shooters in the NBA at any point, but it didn't stop people from wanting him to take it out of nostalgia. I don't think the Rockets have changed their mind about the mid range jumper. Like with CP3, if you can hit it at an elite rate, it's a good shot and the team is ok with it. The team has never stopped that from happening. MOST mid range shooters are shooting like 30-40%ish from mid range and that's a garbage shot, you always have another player on the floor who, even contested, can acquire more points than that from the exact same possession. You need to be upwards of 50% to account for the fact that you get the least bonus points on this shot (least fouls occur here) out of all the shots and you're not fully opening up passing options when you pull up mid range. There's a lot lost so you have to be extra deadly. Jalen is shooting lights out. He's flashing CP3-like ability from mid range so I'm glad we're building on it.
Not quite, even if you shoot mid-range at 50% or above, your 12 footer will never open up driving lanes. Teams will give up a shot that goes in half of the time to prevent a shot that goes in 60% of the time. In an ideal world, every offensive possession ends with a good look at the rim, or an open 3 pointer. But every defense works to prevent that from happening. Mid-range ability allows for an offense to get something out of a possession where the defense locks them down totally. Its a bail out shot, and the ultimate floor raiser.
Lol, the fact that you think there are no statistics about how an elite mid range shooter changes an offense says a lot about where you're at.
So the step through dribble really raised my eyebrow last game, but there was another move that caught my attention. The hesi dribble a step in front of the 3 point line. Reason being he goes hesitation dribble and explodes to the basket with one dribble in a single fluid motion and he is at the rim. It was like he teleported from one place to the other it happened so fast. What kind of burst is this?
