My brother is arguing the same thing. I know he’s most likely changing to 4 but I really want that rookie jersey. I’ll the number 4 also lol
Statistically a midrange shot shot at 60% is about the same as shooting 3s at a 40% clip. But ideally you still want the other players to shoot 3s rather than 2s. That was the plan to only have 1 Derozan, 1 CP3 doing it while the others don't.
There is a non statistical reason to take mid range shots. So the defense doesn't collapse the paint and run off dudes from the three point line not worrying at all about the mid range area. It opens up the half court if the defense knows the mid range is a viable threat.
I mentioned this elsewhere, but I agree with their being non-mathematical reasons for it. If I was assigned to being the primary defender against Jalen, I'd close out on the 3 first and foremost, make him drive. I know my help defense has been assigned to crash and meet him at the rim. Once he's by me, I know all I have to do is try to challenge at the rim. The mere threat that he could stop short, avoid the double team, and that I might fly by him when he pulls up completely changes how I have to defend him. The best option might be to just let him shoot that mid range, but if he's hitting that, then it's a win for him. Seems like he's really confident about it. If teams do continue to meet him at the rim and close on 3s exclusively, he can eat middies until the scouting report changes. With his first step and change of direction, that's going to be a TOUGH assignment for anyone.
Holy f*ck that's way higher than I expected. Those are the type of numbers CP3 would average in his best month.
I went to a Rockets' function once where Morey spoke. A person asked why he placed so much emphasis on the 3 ball. Morey's response: "Three points are more than two." That encapsulates my frustrations with Morey-ball. Analytics are great, but they can't be the only thing that dictates basketball decisions, because basketball is not so black and white.
There is a lot more to that. It is not as easy as: 40% on 3s is 60% on 2s. 3s usually have longer rebounds which usually have a better chance of going to the offense - when you have 3pt shooters standing around the 3pt line there is a lot more space for drives or isos, etc. mid range shots have a higher chance of being contested than 3pt shots… Of course there are positives about mid range shots as well - and Morey definitely has thought about them all. In Jalens case we are talking mostly about open mid range shots after driving by his man, which he converts at a high rate and which in turn open up his drives and 3pt shot. So at least so far they are a net positive. I would still like to see him develope a floater though…
Imagine calling everyone in a Jalen Green thread as being part of his cult but posting the most in the damn thread... Boy is slow!
You know what’s really cool. The overlooked part is the efficiency. He’s not just chucking. He’s picking his spots and attacking smartly. He had a very strong February at 16.5 points on 60.4 TS% and has been outstanding in March at 23.5 points on 62.4 TS%. This is elite efficiency guys. Think about that. He hasn’t even grown into his body yet. He is doing this despite having a weak frame and honestly a slightly below average handle. Two things that will certainly improve over time. With so much room for growth and development, he’s only scratching the surface of what he can be.
I hate long jumpers bc I think a step back 3 has just as much chance of going in. The short jumpers are essential bc it opens up other parts of your game more so than anything else.
I believe his favorite word is simp. lost count of how many times people posting positive messages about Green were called simps.
That and any shot taken in rhythm will have a much higher success rate than the statistics suggest. DeRozan might shoot 60% from middy for example but DeRozan getting to his spot in rhythm at the mid range will be a much higher percentage. I’m glad the mid range is making a come back, not everything about basketball can be explained away with numbers
