It just amazes me how some of these gm's make such horrible moves this is when we have to look at Morey and see just how good he really is ...... Great for Frye but horrible for the Magic.

    The DOMINO falls.

No Love or Bosh or Carmelo to Orlando.

Just more evidence that bad teams will over pay. Players need to realize that if you want to be on a championship level team you will have to take a small paycut. If not go play for the magic.

Slow down cowboy, Channing Frye is far, far, far from a superstar.

lol he will be playing until he's 35 years old and by then the Magic will be looking to get rid of him.

I don't know how/why they couldn't get him to accept less in year or less in money per year. It seems they did him a huge favor and gave in to both parts of the deal.

The fact he's 31 doesn't bother them obviously. His shooting stroke won't change with age and that's about all he excels at for his position so it's what they're paying for. Will do well in stretches with Gordon since Gordon can't shoot worth a damn. At the end of his contract I guess he'll be a Lin-like expiring. Still though, 4 yr/32 mil is overpaying for frye. Would have actually liked him on this team for cheaper.

It's funny that here everyone thinks that only veteran minimum contracts are reasonable contracts.

A bit too expensive for Frye, but it's not the worst deal I have ever seen.

Frye can play... 5-6 million would be more appropriate.

That's a lot of money to pay for fries. I would at least expect it to include a beverage.

LOL yes filling out our roster with overpaid guys like Patpat for 6M and now Frye for 8M is the surest way to a championship.

Apart from Lowry NO ONE significant has signed a deal, in fact you have all these replaceable role players signing for way larger money. If I'm gonna overpay anyway I'd rather overpay Parsons rather than any of these FAs, you can find comparable guys in SL for 10% of the cost.

If anything, waiting out is the best option because as the cap space shrinks people will sign for less. Right now you have all these bad teams signing guys for way too much money because they have capspace to burn and nobody to spend it on. Trying to compete with these guys for role players is a sure way to end up with overpaid contracts.

The world won't end next year, as long as we keep Dwight, Harden and Parsons on the team we can take our time to sign whoever we want. If we end up with an empty roster the coming year then fine, that's better than panicking and filling out your team with overpaid dudes.

Bad teams have to overpay. Frye will be the vet presence but one capable of starting, ie will have respect, not a token DNP vet...

overpaid or not, the rockets are losing options to fill out their bench. it will be max player or bust this summer.

Makes sense. Magic had to reach minimum payroll. What are the options? Take a bad expiring contract + an asset in exchange for nothing. That asset, given they had to swallow just $8m, would probably be a late first round pick. No control over what type of player has the expiring contract, a lot of times it's a person you would want to cut.

The alternative: sign a guy who is a good locker room presence around young people, fits a role the team needs, and also has a skill set that is valuable around the league. Decent defense and 3pt shooting from a big man. Make the 4th year super cap friendly (IIRC it's partial guarantee). So essentially it's a 3 year contract. You keep him for the one year, and on a young team like Orlando he gets plenty of minutes to showcase his skills and produce improved numbers making him a more attractive asset than he was before you signed him. By the time summer rolls around, this is essentially a veteran on a 2 year contract who can hit the 3, play decent defense and is not wildly overpaid - something very attractive to contenders. They can trade him for at least the late first round pick they would have otherwise gotten. Alternatively, if the young guys are improving rapidly he's a nice piece for the team to have. After all, the Magic look like they're building through the draft rather than free agency, and their assets are valuable in trades as well.

If the Magic don't reach minimum payroll, they have to pay the difference between the minimum and their current payroll anyway so essentially his first year is a freebie.

It looks to me like the Magic thought of a good way to make use of their salary situation when there are not too many eye-popping options available to them to make use of that empty payroll. They'll get a mediocre first round pick or a young asset next summer if they decide to trade him. Not a bad deal, and I'm sure they're fully aware that $8m/season is a couple of million over his market value - but how else were they going to get a good future trade asset to come to a rebuilding team?

Not joking, I would consider some Clutchfans members to run my team over half these NBA gms. This is what happens when more than 3-4 teams have major cap space. This is why you do not increase the cap.
