It sounds like the consensus is that 2K7 is better than Live for the 360.

But how about for luddites like me, those backward-looking gamers who just have a current gen Xbox, not a 360?

For the current gen Xbox, and for someone who has never purchased a basketball game, should I go Live or 2K7?

I have both live and 2k7 for the current gen and I suggest you go get 2k7.. Live is pretty bad this year. I thought it'll be better since live 06 was pretty good but live is pretty dissapointing. Too many bugs like the auto sub feature, pgs score a WHOLE lot than they're supposed to, etc. And I've been playing live since 2000. This is my first 2k game and I think I'm sticking with it. I miss the freestyle control though.

    i'll continue beating the dead horse;

since it's introduction in 2000 on the dreamcast. The 2K series imo, has continually outclassed it's main competition; EA's NBA LIVE.

From presentation to gameplay to graphics, EA has always been behind. Although I haven't played this years pos, but I've played previous versions and still cannot conceive why anyone would drop $50 on such a pos. (it's probably the millions of $$ in marketing/advertising EA throws around)

For what it's worth, ere is a my mini review of 2K7 for the 360

Gameplay: Every player has their own unique shot. Do you like Yao's jumpshot where he barely gets his feet off the ground? "It's in the game". There are so many distinct animations, you'd have to play the game for days to see all of them. Everytime you choose to play as a different team, you have to "re-learn" the timing because each NBA player has a unique shot. The AI is pretty good, but not perfect. For example, if the computer is down by 3 with 4 seconds to go, don't expect it to shoot a 3 all the time. I've only played the game on PRO level so far so I cant comment on gameplay on other difficulty levels.

Graphics: This has been a distinct strength for 2k ever since the dreamcast days. 2k7 is no different. The arenas are very well put together. You have people walking around in the crowd. Players on the bench each doing their own thing (cheering, tired,ect...). I even noticed if your playing on the road, there will be a few of your fans in the stands. The player models look really good. Although some of the players look really weird/alien-like. The only real complaint I have is the jersey's on players all have some kind of space inbetween them. (they don't quite fit)

Sound: Player chatter is awesome and the crowd is pretty responsive at times. The announcers are kevin harlen and kenny smith. 2k needs to record some new lines. They repeat lots of things. The soundtrack sucks as usual.

Presentation: So EA bought ESPN and 2k is left with nothing. I can tell you the half-time show is a joke. Look at the intro graphic. It looks really pre-school. I mean it is what it is...most gamers aren't buying the game for the presentation. I'd probably ahve to give EA props as they are really good at integrating things into their games...

Problems/bugs: The collision detection is kind of blah. I'll dunk over someone and get a foul called...as soon as my feet hit the floor, one of my arms will slice right into the person. (NICE). One really annoying bug that is still in the game is when your player shoots really close to the backboard almost paralell and the ball ends up behind the backboard, hence an out of bounds call. I've only had the game for 3 days so I haven't encountered many bugs as of yet.

Strengths: Gameplay (heavy sim), crystal clear HD graphics. The franchise mode or "the association" is as deep as a game can get. From player development to 3 team trades, 2k has it all. Gameplay sliders make the game even more life-like. I haven't tried the 24/7 mode yet, but it's definately a bonus to have. Online play is nicely laid out and plays nearly flawless.

Weaknesses: Not many but here they are.
The Play-by-play is old and weak, think I heard 3 new lines. Presentation is not very good. No half-time show, no introductions, ect. A few bugs like collision detection, some annoying carry-overs from 2k6.

    scores:
    graphics: 9/10
    gameplay: 9/10
    presentation: 7/10
    Sound: 8/10
    Value: 9/10

    overall: 8.4/10

this was a quick overview of the 360 version.

Current-Gen refers to currently-sold, but oldest, consoles from the current manufacturers, which means the Sony PS2, the Nintendo Gamecube, and the Microsoft XBox.

Microsoft came out with their 'next'gen' console almost a year ago, giving them almost a whole year's head-start in the 'next-gen console wars'. Microsoft's Next-Gen console is the XBox 360. Sony's upcoming next-gen console is the PS3. Nintendo's next-gen console is the (snicker) 'Wii'. (whee? we? oui? Whatever, it is hands-down the worst name for a product EV.ER.)

Microsoft's and Sony's next-gens are truly 'next generation', in that they are packed to the gills with advanced hardware and future-looking technology. While Sony's PS3 is slated to have the new Blu-Ray Drive (for higher amounts of data on their game DVDs as well as being able to play Blu-Ray-specific High-definition DVDs) and a larger hard drive (60gb as opposed to 360's 20gb), it is similar to Microsoft's offering in its support for High-definition gaming (and if you have not yet played a game in full HD, you do NOT know what you are missing!) and its internet-connected capabilities.

Primarily because of the Blu-Ray drive, Sony's console is slated to debut somewhere in the neighborhood of between $500 and $600. Even for hard-core gamers, that's pretty steep, especially when considering that the games could possibly tip the scales at $70 on average.

Microsoft's 360 sells for $399 (forget the $299 unit without the hard drive, it does not exist, it does not exist, it does not exiiiist...), but comes with 'only' standard DVD playback capabilities. The rumor is that Microsoft will release an 'HD-DVD' add-on player for the 360 this Christmas for $150. HD-DVD is the competitor to Blu-Ray (the discs are not compatible with each others' players either, although both offer HD-quality video output).

The $250 'Wii' is taking a different approach. Like all their other consoles, DVD-playback is ignored, and HD video output is not a priority, with the highest resolution it can achieve being 480p (as opposed to 1080p for Sony and Microsoft). However, Nintendo's offering certainly has the most unique thing going for it : a wireless 'stick' controller, which, allegedly, offers such a precise motion-sensing capability that most of its games will be played by swinging the 'stick' remote around in the air. Their goal is to get the non-gamer to play, and for kids to 'get off the couch'. Personally, I have seriou doubts about this thing, as Nintendo has tried stunts of this nature before, and suffered nothing but humiliating failure every time. I think the novelty of the tihng will wear off extremely quickly.

While Sony's PS3 will undoubtedly be a very cool device, it seems pretty clear that Microsoft's XBox 360 is going to be the big winner in this 'next-gen console war'. Its lower price, year-long head start, its million-unit head start, its game developers' having had a much longer amount of time to learn how to truly make the machine shine, combined with its built-in advantages of a serious compatibility with Windows networks (wireless or wired), either Media Center edition or the more limited XP version, its absolutely unbelievably awesome wireless controller, and the must-have XBox-Live Gold, reasonably-good backwards compatibility with original XBox games, and more.. all this adds up to Microsoft becoming the new King of the Hill in the next gen console arena.

Wow, thanks! OK, so you guys use "gen" when differentiating between the OLD xBox and the 360, got it.

So, I'm assuming that the jersey # changes are only for the next gen xBox 2k7, correct? If that's true, that's outrageous!

REally great game. As was mentioned before, I love how every player has their own unique shot. they got down Marion's weird heave perfectly.

I'm loving 2K7 on 360 as well. There isn't much I can add to what has already been said.

But, player lock is FINALLY fixed this year. No more "change on pass" setting. It's a full out "player lock" The great thing is that the computer players will play as if you are not playing at all (if that makes any sense at all). My brother and I created ourselves and put us on the Magic and started an Association. Now, we did this on 2K6 a couple of times with different teams and, while it was fun, it got real frustrating a lot of the time because the AI players wouldn't do anything. We would pass them the ball WIDE open under the rim and they would just pass it back to us completely coverd 10+ ft. from the basket.

None of this happens now. The AI players run the plays accordingly and run plays for the star player(s). For us obviously, our best player is Dwight Howard. They always call plays or him, the AI players will throw down to the post, he'll pass out if doubled, players will shoot themselves if they are open, etc. They even run some plays for us and other teammates. Now at times, because we haven't figured out what to do on some plays, the offensive sets gets weird. But, those instances are far in between.

I guess what I am saying is, try the player lock feature. Hell, try it out with a buddy or two. It's great!!

P.S. The create-a-player is hard as hell. I can't get anyone to look even normal, let alone like who I'm creating. Spanoulis looks like some drugged-out hobo who was pulled of the streets just for the game.

2k7 for 360. Novak and several other new additions are not in the game. I made any moves done since 8/7 since thats the most recent roster update online. I did add Bonzi to the team.

For anyone thinking of Live 07 please reconsider. It's a complete joke(as it has been since Live 2003 with the freestyle stick) and has not seen any good or halfway decent reviews from hardcore Live fans themselves. 2k7 is so real, it should take some 8-10 min quarters before you see an average nba score. It's not like you could just dunk on anyone with the right guy. The game has shown a lot more respect when it comes to contesting dunks. No more overrated Ginobili dunking on half the franchise.

FINALLY! A set of sliders/formula for a CAP on 2K7. This is VERY much appreciated. We should start a CAP sliders/formula thread for 2K7. No one in the 2K boards or anywhere else post that stuff. Just pics. Some are spot on. Thanks!

Although I admit I haven't played either 07 versions of these games, I seem to be one of a handful of people on the planet that prefer NBA Live. I think the AI is generally better than in the 2K series. I also have grown to love the freestyle controls and imo allow you to put your own personal flair into your gameplay experience. With that being said, I do recognize the 2K series as solid, but with the presentation and everything else considered, I find Live to be more enjoyable.

Wow, Live got a 4.9/10 on IGN compared to an 8.7/10 for 2K. Looks like Live put in a half-ass effort this year (this is on Xbox current gen).

I was a Live fan in the late 90's, then jumped to 2K till last year and bought Live again. I thought 2K was better for multi-player, but was way too easy when doing a dynasty...so I got Live last year and was really impressed.

Now I've got a dilemma ... just update the rosters from last years Live or get 2K7?

I'm sorry, I didn't specify the system. I was referring to the NBA 2K7 game on Xbox 360.

sorry to change directions of the convo...but is this years live better than last?
Last years was actually worse than the previous years, imo. It was a complete waste of $.

I think that answers it. Basically on Xbox360 version of the game you can change the jersey number, but I guess not on the PS2 version. That sucks!
