One thing I forgot to mention was that Drogba was clearly offside when Chelsea scored the first goal. Close call, as it is not 100 % clear that he touched the ball, but he definitely distracted the goalkeeper, so it should have been called offside.

Chelsea up 1-0. Now Bayern have got it all to do and need 3 goals.

Chelsea lucked out - first goal in the first game was offside, one was deflected and went in.

Today, another deflected shot that went in. 10-2 corners for Bayern, complete dominance. One header to the cross bar, one shot wiped from the line by a Chelsea defender.

Overall, reasons Chelsea barely made it through:

Luck, injuries to Makaay and Pizarro, and the individual brilliance of Drogba. Drogba clearly outplayed Kovac by far in both games. Had Makaay not been injured and on top of his game, things might have looked different, but...

Anyway, Chelsea is better than I thought they were. Drogba and Lampard are outstanding, and their goalie is very good; moreover, they have a very disciplined team that plays smarter than British teams usually do. Credit the ******* Mourinho, I guess.

And placemats, Bayern did win today. You forever disqualified yourself from any football (soccer) discussion by saying that the US had the two best goalkeepers in the world.

So - who was it that gets the 20 bucks from me? I forgot.

Chelsea had worse injuries than Bayern, to be honest. And that final scoreline really flatterred the German side.

They never looked like going through.

    Bitter much?

Robben was a more serious injury than anyone on Bayern - two late goals after the tie was decided don't mean you were in control, the only reason that Drogba looked like world class was because Bayern's central defense were utter crap.

Bayern looked decent on the wings(which has nothing to do with Chelski's two injured fullbacks, I'm sure), until the ball went into the middle when Ballack and Demichelis were pretty much anonymous.

    puhleeeze!

I'll admit Bayern played the best futbol in the first half, but they definetly lacked the passion in the second half and when they did play well, it was too late. complete dominance huh?
And another thing, I'm very sure I never called Freidel or Howard or Keller in any combination the two best keepers in the world. I know I called them world class or in the same class as Kahn or Buffon. I think I said we had two of the best, not THE best. So enough with the euro snob attitude!

    P.S.

I will forever give the duetsche nationalmannschaft grief for the way they stole the game against the US in korea. That goal line call was as bad as the one in the 1966 final.

In a marginally related note that I don't feel like starting a new thread for, I've got tix to see Tottenham play West Bromwich in London next Wednesday in a meaningless EPL matchup (well WB is trying to avoid relegation I think, but otherwise). Go Spurs!

And in a footnote, apparently there's some game that same night between two other teams based in London (which is sold out and scalping for 200 pounds... )

ok now there is only one team i do not want to win the CL. i hope chelsea will lose bad in the next round.

I also hope Inter will get a very high penalty. It is a disgrace for soccer how alot of fans act during games. my favorite club feyenoord also got punished for the behaviour of the fans(IMHO the penalty was not high enough).
    The uefa should punush harder.

I'm an Arsenal fan so got no love for the Spurs, but you should have a pretty good time at White Hart Lane. The fans are pretty good and their dutch coach has them playing well. Let me know if you want some restaurant recommendations.

Were any of these games the place where that dude got beaned in the shoulder with a flare? I saw the end of that highlight on Sportscenter...it looked like a forest fire on the field...

Forget the Superbowl, I want to go to a soccer game where a fight breaks out...Soccer riots make a Pistons/Pacers game seem like a tupperware party...

I wonder why the Italians don't crackdown on violence like the English have.

From Soccernet about the Liverpool-Juve gane today:

Juve arrests ahead of Liverpool match

TURIN, Italy, April 13 (Reuters) - Hundreds of police and Juventus supporters massed in Turin's centre on Wednesday before a Champions League soccer game against Liverpool which officials fear could provoke violence.
Only a handful of Liverpool fans - few wearing the club's colours - walked around in the afternoon sun, braving threats from some Juventus fans who promised a 'vendetta' for the Heysel stadium disaster when 39 people, most of them Italian, died.

English supporters were staying in neighbouring towns and travelling straight to the Delle Alpi stadium for the two sides' first meeting in Italy since the 1985 European Cup final between Juventus and Liverpool when a charge by Liverpool fans triggered tragedy at Brussels' Heysel stadium.

'Tonight will be a battle, in every sense. On and off the pitch,' said Angelo, 20, a Juventus fan who travelled from the southern region of Basilicata for the game.

'I don't want any problems but I expect there will be trouble because so many people are looking for a fight.'

A large proportion of the tickets reserved for Liverpool fans have gone unsold.

When the two sides met at Anfield for the first leg last week, the English club's fans tried to make peace with Juventus. But some Italians turned their backs during the commemorations and raised their middle fingers.

Since their club's 2-1 defeat Juve fans' internet message boards have carried increasingly threatening comments. On Tuesday night one Liverpool fan suffered minor head injuries after a clash with local supporters in Turin.

Turin's mayor has appealed for calm. Local newspaper La Stampa told Juve fans on Wednesday that 'the only revenge is to eliminate Liverpool'.

'I have felt the terrible consequences of violence. I know what it means. So this evening leave hatred and everything else behind,' Andrea Lorentini, the 22-year-old son of a young doctor killed at Heysel, wrote in La Stampa.

'The only thing you should do is support your team with the same passion as always. It will be the best way to remember those who paid for their football beliefs with their lives.'

Italian media have said some 1,100 police and special forces officers will be deployed in the city centre and around the stadium for the match (kickoff 1845 GMT).

'Nothing can wipe out a wound like Heysel,' Juventus captain Alessandro Del Piero said. 'But Liverpool and its people made their apology during the first leg. It would be a wise and intelligent gesture to accept.'

Local authorities have imposed a 24-hour alcohol ban in the city and advised Liverpool fans to keep a low profile and to stay in well-policed areas.

'We were given leaflets and told to stay clear of the train station,' said Liverpool-born David Chesterton, wearing a red Liverpool shirt and carrying a scarf with both teams' names.

'It's not a question of being afraid but there's always a small minority you have to be wary of.'

Tuesday's Champions League match in Milan between city rivals Inter and AC Milan was abandoned after fans threw flares on to the pitch, injuring AC Milan goalkeeper Dida.

Wednesday's match will be a key security test for Turin authorities who host the Winter Olympics next year and have faced criticism over the planning and the financial handling of the Games.

Ugh, the Dippers are through, that sets up an all English semi. I don't know who I'll root for, I hate both teams, but I've hated the Dippers for alot longer.

Lyon-PSV is now in extra time.

That was me. I will accept a 20 dollar donation to the Tip Jar.
