I've gotta say, smoking cannabis DOES have a negative effect on physical conditioning. It's not a miracle psychoactive with no physical side effects, but you would have to smoke a ****-ton of blunts, every day to truly have it impact your game. In this case though, they obviously overindulged. It's fair to assume that if they felt it was necessary to bring their weed, they aren't focusing on making a good impression.

Of course, I love smoking. I've smoked for three years and I still ball everyday, often I smoke before I play. I incurred far worse effects on my conditioning from smoking cigarettes (which i don't smoke anymore) than weed. But I can't get past wondering if I, an admitted college stoner/basketball amateur, wouldn't dare bring weed anywhere near my job (esp if it was such a high pay/easy input job), then what on earth made them think this would be worth it? If I had a job paying half that, I would be dedicated every ounce I had to make a good impression. I wouldn't even curse around my employers, let alone have a blunt bash.

If you ask me, it's AAU culture on display. These kids grow up being given anything they want and doing anything they want on the back of their basketball skills, and then they think they are entitled to NBA superstardom. It ain't free kids.

As an occasional partaker in the herb, I'll answer that one just to play devil's advocate, it clearly occurs less often because alcohol is more easily accessible and more people drink than smoke dank. I am sure if it were legal, the number of stoned accidents would increase dramatically.

    Just call me Captain Obvious.

Actually, you have no ground to be making that claim. The evidence just isn't there.

The study cited earlier in the thread about fatal car crashes in France had a number of flaws, and can't be considered proof of a strong link between being high and causing accidents. One interesting issue that may drastically skew the results is that they didn't control for age. Younger people are more likely to get in accidents, so the prevalence of cannabis users in different age groups can have a big effect on the data. Another issue is that they didn't include results for drivers who had a BAC of less than 0.05%, so there were even more accidents in which drivers were under the influence alcohol as well as THC. This omission further increases uncertainty about the results.

It's a complicated issue that's clouded by emotion and prejudice on both sides. Accident severity, duration of impairment, duration of detectability, and other factors are not yet well understood. What is well understood, however, is that the risk of driving while stoned is much smaller than the risk of driving drunk.

I don't care I still think both guys were absolute steals. Especially Chalmers. Everybody expects Arthur to be better but Chalmers could end up being one of the biggest steals in the draft.

As a matter of fact, my 31 year old and 26 year old are not interested in drugs. My 26 year old isn't even interested in having a beer.

It is just curious that you have weed listed as one of your "interests" in your profile.

How about the evidence of all the alcohol related deaths every year, compared to mar1juana related deaths? If alcohol was illegal and mar1juana was legal, the number of accidents under the influence would go down drastically.

From experience, whenever I drove home stoned, I tend to drive much slower and more cautious. Yes, maybe it is because I'm paranoid but so be it. When I'm drunk, I wouldn't even attempt to drive. I can barley walk or talk when I'm drunk. No way am I going to attempt to drive when I can't even see straight.

Isn't it strange how we, including myself, seem to get more outraged when it's a million-dollar career that's put in jeopardy by smoking weed?

It's as if we think it's ok to get stoned on the job if it's only paying minimum wage.

    Anyway.

If I were getting minimum wage I'd be stoned all the time.

Well, if I could afford it. (probably not)

You can't predict how the number of accidents would adjust if alcohol was illegal and mar1juana was legal. The only thing you could predict is that Houston traffic would come to a crawl. :D

Alcohol/mar1juana related deaths vs. alcohol/mar1juana related accidents are two totally different sets of data. The only comparable data, overall deaths, clearly shows alcohol's toxic qualities vs. the arguably harmful qualities of mar1juana. As far as accidents go, there is little if any substantial evidence because with many alcohol related accidents, both substances are often found together.

Anyway, I'm not arguing the danger of one vs. the other. I was simply saying that the there is no evidence of the risk of driving while stoned being any smaller than the risk of driving drunk because there is a very small sample set for the former. I mean it's like saying the risk of driving while rolling is smaller than the risk of driving while drunk. While it may or may not, there is no evidence to support either stance.
