Supposedly this will help figure out the mysteries about how matters gain mass...

This is a good video that explains what the LHC does. It's going to look for the Higgs Boson particle which is sort of considered the god particle. I think they'll try and recreate the big bang to shed some light about how it all started, and I believe they're going to test whether the string theory is proven to exist or is just a nice math problem with science fiction tacked onto it. There are other tests obviously but they really won't get to the good stuff a couple of years from now.

Also here's a link from the somethingawful forums by an engineer that actually works there.

Lastly here are a series of photos of the LHC. The first comment is hilarious.

I think we have a science thread already but I'm gonna dump an astronomy discovery that is pretty cool. Dark matter has been found. It was found from a collision of two galaxies and the left overs are the blue halo in the picture.

Here's a good explanation about dark matter that didn't make me feel stupid.

I really enjoy the TED talk videos.

Stephen Hawking said there's nothing to worry about, so I'll take his word.

But it would suck that the world would end the same season the Rockets are about to win the championship.

Indeed. That makes this Mordor then.

Seriously, the LHC is designed to look like every sci-fi movie ever.

This could be a very expensive pilot episode of the next Stargate series.

how is it 1.9 degrees above absolute zero AND -271°C?

Because that is where they match on the temperature scale. 1.9 degrees Kelvin = -271°C

    I thought 1.9K was -271.25°C or -271.3°C if you're going with 2 significant digits.

Its four years and three months away. Dec 21, 2012. The interesting thing is that there are other prophecies that hint to the same time. Check out St. Malachy's papal prophecies for one. I hope I got the name right.

As for LHC, well its interesting stuff. Anytime you are searching for something known as the "God" particle, it is serious. Truth is, advocates say the chance of a black hole is small and a strange theory. If you know about physics at all though much of what we know now came as unexpected and strange results i.e. black holes, dark matter, protons, etc.

On the other hand, experiments like this have taken place already, but not as this magnitude.

I personally don't know if we're moving too fast. Strange stuff.
