I'm ready to perish. I'm also ready for a Myst-like event to happen. I'm also ready for an Event Horizon-like event to happen. I'm ready for a black hole to suck the Earth into it. I'm ready to see that part of the world disintegrate into the ground. I'm ready for God to strike them down for playing with the universe particles.

    Oh yea...I'm ready.

Yeah and I bet the whole thing will only be available on pay-per-view.

    Lousy stinkin' pay-per-view...

...[*sigh*]... I'll just have to download a bootleg copy off ther internet.

    2012 is the new Y2K...

Do we have any doomsday dates to look forward to in 2013 and beyond?

By the way, here are some ways to know you are being sucked into a small black hole. Luckily, and counter-intuitively, it is much easier to know if you're being sucked by a small one than being sucked by a big black hole.

    1. Tunnel-vision: the universe of light will shrink from a full 360 degrees in any angle you choose, approaching one little disk of light through which you'd see just about everything.

    2. Time acceleration: as your world view shrinks to a small disk, you watch everything else speeding up. Whole millenia will stream by as your heart beats once.

    3. Tidal forces: the part of you closest to the black hole gets sucked on much harder than the part of you further from the black hole, so you will get stretched very uncomfortably.

If you experience any of these, please call CERN immediately!

    B-Bob --

I just take bean-o in advance of these things, and it seems to work out.

Yes, interestingly, if Einstein's ideas are correct, being sucked into a small-to-medium black hole is a LOT like what people describe in near-death experiences (except for the whole getting pulled apart like taffy thing.)

And bean-O will not help you in this case, MadMax, unless Einstein was missing something. (And it is perhaps true that he was never introduced to said substance.)

i like the idea of figuring out this stuff.......but what if they had invested all that time and money and brain power into developing alternative energy sources?

Whatever...the last time they said a black hole would hit us, it missed entirely and just took out Beaumont. It's all hype.

Maybe they can time travel and drill for oil that never runs out because hell... you can time travel.

Big oil is behind this :p

scientists will say that the biggest advances comes as unforseen consequences of absolutely fundamental research.

Such as: studying the basic physics of a semiconductor, with few know uses in the early 20th century...
    ---> begets...
the digital revolution of modern times.

And a lot of modern medicine (the techniques, not the prices and the messed up care system) came from fundamental studies of gene trascription... just wanting to know how the basics of life work.

So, by looking for the Higg's boson with this new LHC machine, we may eventually find some completely new technology and industry (if history is our guide.) Or at least we'll get something cool like the astronaut drink, TANG.
