Shane is one player that I would be pissed if DM traded. Why trade one of the last leaders on your team, especially if we're not getting anything in return? I'd be all for it if the Rockets received something decent. Shane deserves to win now. He sure isn't going to reach the next level on the Rockets this year.
The point is: some people speaks about Shane like he retires tomorrow. He's 32. You have key players contending in Boston at 35, and playing at a good level, probably for some more years. ... Battier can still give us a few years at a good level. 3, maybe more. Morey just said the other day that the club thinks they are 2-3 moves away of a championship caliber roster. Shane said recently he prefers to stay in Houston for non-basketball reasons, anyway this means we can re-sign him this summer almost easily. Not if we send him to another city in the middle of the season. At this situation, why are you going to trade him for an -almost- 2nd round pick or 2 young players with no special upside... More so when we have a roster with enough young players, and not enough competitive players like Shane.
But those are the 2-3 most important moves to getting building a championship team, and as a result the 2 or 3 hardest moves to pull off. Sorry, but its not going to happen.
Is Jermaine O'Neal still hurt? I don't really want him but thats probably the best we could get in a trade like this... unless theres a 3rd team involved
I'm sure Bill Simmons was making a joke. You can't trade for injured players and Morey would be stupid to do so.
I'm glad that DM is not stupid enough to trade a valuable asset for peanuts. (and really, that's all the Celts would be trying to give us, peanuts.) We need to get value for our assets. Failing that, at least get us cap space going into the off season. Just don't bring some crappy asset like O'Neal (either of them), Wafer or any of the other useless players they have. Now, if you get us a rotation player like Big Baby, well, that's a bit different. Perkins would be an instant YES! from DM I'm certain. Neither of those players is being offered.
What about a bigger deal involving Kmartin + Battier + Patterson for Allen + Perkins? This would net the Celtics a key play maker, a solid defensive forward to deal with Labron + Kobe, and a young big, while we get the defensive force in Perkins that we covet. Its a lot to give up on both sides, but its a needs based trade imo...
I agree that would be valuable, but I'm not sure it's practical. GMs don't usually trade for picks that far in the future (they may not be around to use it). It would also need to be unprotected (or little protection) to be valuable, and that is risky for Boston. Maybe a 2012 pick as the asset (plus expiring salary filler, if it exists), and you take your chances. I don't really like Boston as a fit for a trade as far as the Rockets are concerned, but would be happy if Battier ended up on a contender like the Celtics.
Boston's not going to part ways with Allen. Their core (Garnett, Pierce, Allen, Rondo) will stay in tact, no question.
I agree, its a tough parting, but their trio is getting old. Kmart would fit in perfectly in a Rondo back court for years to come, may prove better from a longevity perspective.
if we're giving up battier, we better get back a top 6-7 rotational player from boston. not saying battier is that good, but giving up battier for nothing much basically guarantees the celtics a championship. i would want perkins at least in the deal.
