Wrong again, HimmmHammm. Of course all big men are quick learners, right? None of them take more than a year to develop, right?
Yep. High school (and probably college) coaches always say "You can't teach height." and while that make work in lesser leagues, you can't get away with having a 7 foot moron in the NBA. It's a bit disheartening to see guy with some bball talent (such as an Ivan Johnson or Goudelock) get passed up in favour of some stiff who just happens to have a pituitary problem. I thought the Celtics picked Melo way too high, probably could have traded down and still got him or a player like him.
Maybe ainge is trying assure they have the worse record in the nba. He will have a lot of comp from philly though
Oh dear. I was convinced that Fab Melo would be as effective as Drummond in the NBA (partial prediction of Drummond not being real good). Me fail.

yes, a late second rounder at best. had shown nothing in the spanish league and for years his attitude was a problem.
It seems some teams still put more value in how athletic or tall some players are rather than if they can actually play ball. I am grateful for these teams. Although I think with the Celtics it was more of a reach and a hope, they had the luxury to do that at the time.
Poor Fab? Here's a thought, don't be lazy Fab. Having said that, if he clears waivers I would not mind if the Rockets brought him to camp. Providing they have an available roster spot of course.
I don't know why anyone was high on Fab Melo to begin with. There's a difference between being "raw" with "potential" and being crap. He was always the latter, but he got by due to his size in college. That doesn't work in the pros.
I'm pretty sure Woj's tweet was mistyped and that Memphis received Fab Melo AND CASH in exchange for Donte Greene's non-guaranteed contract. Memphis likely made a small profit in the process, which could be much bigger if another team claims Melo off waivers. The Griz likely tried to quickly flip him but found no takers. The likelihood of anyone claiming him off waivers is greater now than in a few weeks (after teams have already filled out their training camp rosters). Hence, the timing of the Grizzlies' waiving of Melo. Just a guess on my part, though.
I wouldn't mind taking a chance on the Fabulous Fab Melo at the minimum. Hate on him all you like but he does have some potential if he got his head into the game. He can also run the floor & block shots. Not bad for a 3rd string center. Reminds me of Hassan Whiteside's career ATM...

Well, it looks like Mark Deeks of ShamSports.com (a/k/a "Sham" on this BBS) has uncovered the reason why Fab Melo was waived when he was. By waiving Melo before the August 31 deadline, the Grizzlies were able to use the "stretch" provision to stretch out Melo's ~$1.3M 2013-14 cap figure over the next three seasons ($437,080 in each season). (FYI, the actual PAYMENTS are automatically stretched out that way; but the cap treatment needed to be elected.) Had Memphis waited beyond August 31 to waive Melo, it would not have been able to stretch that cap hit for this season. The Griz are currently right up against the luxury tax threshold and felt that they needed the extra breathing room that stretching out Melo's salary would bring. It's the difference in being able to add 1-2 minimum salaried players during the season or not if their goal is to avoid paying the tax (and you KNOW it is). Plus, the tiny cap hit shouldn't hurt them too much in 2014-15 or 2015-16.
