I'm divided on the issue. I'm not really in the Yi-STFU camp, because I can understand that as someone from China he would rather play somewhere with an Asian population above 20k. It's a much more difficult transition than foreign players from Europe or the Americas have to undergo, and that's tough enough. I don't know that US fans appreciate how difficult it can be.

On the flipside, I do agree that this is much more about Fegan trying to plant Yi in the LA, Bay Area, or NY market in order to bring in heavy endorsement money. I'm fairly certain that the total money difference between Milwaukee and those spots is massive.

If I'm running the Bucks, I'd throw in the towel. They're desperate to bring in the potential revenue that Yi represents (sort of how Yao is Les' cash cow) much more than they are thinking he might help them win, but at this point they may want to see if they can't wring GS for major return. Yi as a Warrior would be a huge boon for for both Fegan/Yi and Golden State. If they're willing to pony up a king's ransom for him, get it.

Yi and his agent wanted him to play in a large market, or city with a large Asian population. That would include LA, the Bay Area, NYC, Chicago, Houston, etc. I bet the Bucks could get some good value if they trade him to a team.

Yi is acting like a baby, he should just sign a rookie contract and play for bucks for three years. After that , he can go to any team he pleases if he is any good. If he is not good, no one will care in three years.

the whole wanting to play in a city with asians is silly. its not like greg oden demanded he be traded to miami just so he can be in a city with a lot of old people.

    I'm definitely not.

Kevin Durant just signed a 60m Nike deal to go to a small city in Pac NW that was about to lose its team to Oklahoma freaking city.

The bulk of advertising and endorsement revenue comes from global deals or national deals, I doubt the local market is going to make a huge difference in the 21st century. This goes double for Yi whose target audience is mostly overseas anyway so the city he plays in is irrelevant as he will be on CCTV5 regardless of whether he plays for Milwaukee or Golden STate - and most of them apparnetly want him to STFU and sign anyway.

If being in a big city is going to make an incremental difference it generally occurs over the long term after a player has reached a certain plateau and reached iconic status. After his rookie deal expires he has time to do this.

why are you insulting the overseas-ers?
you think they want to watch scrubs play?
they want to see professionals, like Yao Ming, Tracy McGrady, Luis Scola, and..

Agree or disagree with Yi, what he is doing is squarely within the framework of the draft. Milwaukee took on certain risk in taking this path, so is Yi.

If I'm Yi, I might do the same thing. It's my life, my career.

If Stern wants to prevent this, then change the rules.

Seattle isn't a small city though dude. It's bigger than San Antonio (market and metro wise, which is what counts).

    not exactly.
I see it as merely a compromise, theres something out of Yi's control, Yi has the least power over all these request trade crap. Think about it, a player wants to play in NBA but he has to be released from his previous "wanna make money" club, he can either stand up for himself and risk his whole career(not released by Guangdong Hongyuan) or, in the case, he chose to be Mum's good boy --- trust me, he will never have the balls to do something against Fegan/Guangdong Hongyuan until he signs the contract with whatever NBA team.

So can the Rox get Yi cheap by trading Milwakee Head and JLIII?

No way Yi will decline playing on a team with Yao :D

I've spent a lot of time in seattle and it is not a big city and defintely does not act like one. Populaiton wise it is not exactly huge eitehr. 500k in the city proper.

IF you include the whole metro area all the way down to Olympia (Olympia is about 50 miles, - that bumps it up to 3 milion, but that's a vastly inflated definition of metro area, and only good for 13th biggest in the US.

Regardless the point stnads. Do you honestly thnk Nike signed Durant because they were impressed with the size of the Seattle media market? No, I certainly don't think so, just like they didn't sign LeBron because he plays in a dying rust belt city not much bigger than Milwaukee.

No, I meant THE best basketball league in the world.

Well, no. City limit populations are irrelevant first of all. If you took city limits into account, then San Antonio would be bigger than Dallas. Go to both cities, and tell me which one is bigger?

The official census is taken every 10 years with the last one being in 2000 and the next in 2010. However, many agencies will be able to estimate a population of a given region using sophisticated interpolation techniques. The official 2000 Seattle population is 563,374. It's estimated that the 2006 population is about 580,000. Through the years, Seattle proper's population has gone up and down ever so slightly but bottom line hasn't changed much for decades. It's hourglass figure geographically probably prohibits much land area expansion as the city limit lines haven't changed in years also.

These are estimates directly from the U.S. Census Bureau so probably better to use these figures than the ones I previously cited. Thanks, marksind.

    Seattle metropolitan area: 3.26 million

    Increase since 2000: 219,612

    But anyway..Yi, you should play.

Do you think that Nike singed Durant to 60 M because they were impressed with the size of the Seattle media market? Is that why they signed LeBron, becuase of Cleveland?

What? I don't get it. They signed Durant because he is suppose to be the next MJ and he is GOOD. He could have went to Fargo, North Dakota and Nike would have signed him (yes I know Fargo has no basketball team).

Exactly, that's what I'm trying to say, the same would be true for Yi - like I said most of his target audience is overseas, so his initial wave of endorsements won't reallly mattter where he plays, cause if it's milwaukee or LA, it's a long way from Guangdong regardless.
