Gene, it sounds like you are doing a good job of putting this tourney together. Many years ago I used to run a weekly scramble and I usually made all the pairings. I usually would not allow people to make their own teams, because you would always end up with four "A" players showing up and swearing they were all 20 and 30 handicapers. Also, if four good buddies are playing together their is a better chance they will cheat. If two buddies wanted to be on the same team, I would try to accomodate them as long as it would be a balanced team. Sometimes a group of four buddies would get upset if they couldn't play together, but the whole idea of the tourney was to meet new people and make new friends. I would be surprised if you could get 144 players to pay $75 off this BBS. If it turns out you only have 30 or 40 players it seems like you could get a block of tee times at 2 or 3 in the afternoon at a public course on the weekend(but I could be wrong about this). I don't think I could play at this point, but I'm sure you guys will have a great time. Also, there seems to be some confusion between a scramble and a best ball tourney. A scramble is where everyone on the team tees off and the team chooses the best shot and the entire team gets to play from that point. You continue to do this until the ball is in the hole. A best ball tourney is where you and your teammate each play your own ball and then you record the best score on the scorecard after each hole.
Again, we wouldn't really care who wins other than they get to brag about it. It's more for the comraderie and for a good cause. Definitely a scramble format, everybody hits from the tee then everybody goes up to the best shot and hits from there. That way if you have at least one competant player in the group you can get around the course fairly quickly. One other odd observation - you would think that a scramble foursome would play faster than a foursome playing thier own ball since they would never be playing from a bad spot or averaging much more than 4 strokes per player on each hole. Yet every Monday our touneys take 4 1/2 - 5 hours to play where regular foursomes at our course always play in under 4 hours. I've been watching it for years but I still don't understand it.
1. Would you play? Yes 2. How much would you pay? $75 3. Is Monday a problem, does it have to be a weekend? Monday is OK. 4. Can you arrange for donated beverages Cokes? Beer? Would be willing to bring something. 5. Can you arrange for a donated door prize ( a putter or driver or Rockets shirts etc) (I hate goody bags though, they are too much trouble and you always get Top-flight balls and a cousie) No. 6. Can you arrange for a donated silent auction item (the bidding will have to be quick though if we don't do a dinner) Tim? No.
I'd be in. Willing to pay $75 or a bit higher, but would probably need to be on the weekend. Could probably get a few of my friends to play as well. Keep us informed Gene.
Actually, my question about pace of play wasn't about the format, just the location. Since a scramble seems to be slow but probably the most fun for everyone, I thought it would be best if we played somewhere without a lot of tree trouble, etc.
