That takes work, thinking, and all kinds of other tasks I don't wish to perform for anything, much less a best poster contest.

    Screw that. :D

Is this that 'in' clique thing I've seen mentioned over the past year?

we could even have each contestant submit one "thread" topic, and then we'd have all the potential threads we could possibly need.

the Grand Poobah of the Posting Tournament could assign topics to each matchup, trying to avoid giving any topics submitted by either poster.

like red said, each poster would have up to 5 posts to impress all the voting members in any way they could on the given topic. we might even find out who has the ability to post knowledgably on the widest array of topics.

everyone would base their votes only on the posts submitted for that thread's matchup, rather than on all posting for all time.

if voters cared to, once the initial 5 posts were up, voters could even post explanations for why they voted for the poster they did, what they liked about so-and-so's posting technique, spelling, graphics. . . whatever, it would be up to each voter to determine their own standard.

if we do it this way, however, we should probably only use posters who want to be in the tournament because it would require active participation, as opposed to just going off of passive name recognition.

like there are a lot of people who've been nominated to "play", and they may have no interest in it.

this is beginning to take shape.

imagine George Peppard wearing leather gloves and smoking a cigar: "I love it when a plan comes together."

Can I take over for you then. Wahhhhh wahhhh wahhhhh wahhhhhhh wahhhhh wahhhhhh. Seriously though, can I be like one of those 65th seeded people (129 in this case) where you face off to get into the tournament. 6 months of posting has to have at least earned me that. Come on, f4p: this tournament's Hampton (or whoever the hell the 65th seed was last year)

Dude, I'm totally down with the CC.net Postdown!

    I'd kick everybody's ass!

That's if we just talk about music and stuff...

so, like, a sample matchup thread would look like as follows:

    Poll: BrianKagy vs. Jeff

once you clicked on the thread, the first post would be from the Grand Poobah of the Tournament [puedlfor?]:

the topic for this matchup is: best Marvel Superhero between the years of '87 and '91.

then, BK and Jeff would take their up to 5 turns posting their thoughts on the topic. who knows? maybe it could even become a rhetorical strategy for them to try to get one another off topic. . . I don't know.

after their 5 posts were up, the voting would commence. we'd have to have an agreed up on period of time before the voting would be considered officially closed. we don't want any election 2000 chicanery going on.

as people voted, they could post their thoughts on the posts from within the matchup, ie:

"chievous minniefield: I really liked the way Jeff worked Eastern metaphysical teachings into his discussion of whether Nightcrawler is truly a member of X-men or not. I gave him the nod."

    or

"chievous minniefield: I really liked how, even though the topic was about Superheroes, BrianKagy ended up curbing it back around to being about the Black Crowes' breakup. I had to respect that."

    or

    "bobfinn*: I agree."

and so on and so forth.

perhaps, if this becomes a yearly contest, we could even have the previous year's champion serve as the Presider over the Tournament. who knows? that may be a bit premature.

all I know is that, despite Hoop-T's feeling to the contrary, I think this sounds much more interesting than a which-name-do-I-recognize-and-
    who-has-been-nice-to-me-on-the-board-recently contest.

another advantage to this method is that, theoretically, anyone who wanted to play in this Postdown 2002 could do it.

also, we could use post total as a meaningful seeding tool rather than something arbitrary. theoretically, someone who has posted more should be "better" or at the very least more experienced in posting. the skill aspect allows the "underdog" to try to pull off the upset.

once we knew everyone who wanted to play, it wouldn't be too difficult to seed everyone according to post total. then, let the games begin. . .

This has gone way too far. I'll just plagiarize something from a news article somewhere.

While we're at it, let's make sure it's a thousand words or less, and we should time it also. There has to be a time limit.

Hey, do you think in addition to the essay, we should have some multiple choice as well. Or maybe instead of including only the top 100 or so posters, we should have an entrance exam. I am sure it'd be no trouble at all to send out ScanTron's and number 2 pencils to all the posters in the contest, right?

That's really the only fair way to do this.

    ;) :) :D :p

plus, for those who would lose [almost everyone], the message of the loss is not so much, "you suck. more people dislike you than like you."

but more, "your posts on this particular thread sucked. more people disliked them than liked them. [and maybe even] here's how you can become a better poster between now and next year."

I'm sure anyone in the mental health profession would agree that the second option would be better for the general health of the board. and perhaps even the general quality of our average posts will improve.

if you get outposted by a true pimp sucka, better luck next year.

    okay, I'm done now. maybe.

    wow I'm in the top 128 :D

I think we should just post our votes b/c email gets to confusing with people having multiple accounts and no way to verify who the voters are. I think everyone should be allowed to vote as long as they registered prior to January 1, 2002 (no registering new names just to vote with)

oh and I think we should just vote on the brackets with out the Mrs. America like Q&A part. but maybe have 1 thread to campaign our talk about a bracket and another just for voting to keep it easy.

As long as I don't go in the first round I'm fine! And PLEASE make sure I don't get caught in a bad match-up problem!

Man, I had the brackets all set up, and all the match-ups ready, but this 2002 Postdown idea by Chievious is fantastic. Plus, the benifit is that only people who want to be in the contest will be in it, except cheivious, even though its his idea, I'm going to exclude him for no reason what-so-ever ;).

The downside is that its a great deal of work for me, but that's ok, I have plenty of free time. I think perhaps we should take sign-ups to a new thread.

Simplicity is the key to making this work. The simpler and easier for people to participate (both contestants and voters), the smoother it will go..

Ok, here's how it goes :

For the first few rounds, its only a straight-up popularity contest, but for the final three rounds, Final 8 through the Championship, we'll do the postdown Idea. That way, the BBS won't get bogged down with too many threads, but when we get to the elite posters, we can better differentiate between them.

That's the way I'm doing it.

First bracket will be posted at 7pm tonight.

Lynus can't do it if he gets into the post-down.

But if it's just up to votes in the beginning, go for it!

Don't not vote for him though just b/c he's not here :(

    sounds good, Pued.

only give credit where it's due. . . red came up with the initial Postdown idea [BGM gave us the term]. I just ran with it.

I'm looking forward to the carnage.
