Absolutely agree with your post. Getting 42 wins year after year put us in etenal purgatory: a low playoff seed if at all, and middle draft picks which more often than not brings us players of no consequence.

Yes. I don't think they want to play for us though.

No. All sarcasm aside. I don't think the road forward is with someone else's superstar (unless they were drafted last year and the potential is still unrealized). I think its through the draft. Next years or last years.

Trade two proven NBA starters (who would be starters on MOST teams) for "draft picks and younger players with upside"?

Man, DD, you really have a soft spot for potential.

Please do yourself...and a lot of the rest of us...a HUGE favor. Don't make that "+$34M" quote ever again. Look around CFans just a little deeper and you will find some fine articles/posts by BimaThug and others on the state of the cap. The number you quote bears no semblance to reality.

Beyond that, since there is no CBA in tact beyond the current season, not even Daryl Morey himself knows what next years cap will be.

    Thanks.

I feel so sorry for the Rockets' players. So many "fans" want to trade them all away for nothing. Seriously, some of you would have jumped on Martin for Gortat?? Some of you want to give Scola and Martin away for "youngsters with potential" because by your logic we have absolutely no shot the next couple of years anyway?? Give me a freakin' break. This is too good of a team to "blow it all up" and rebuild. We got off to a freakishly bad start, but we've been playing very well as of late. According to Hollinger's playoff odds, we have a better chance at making the playoffs than Portland, Memphis, and Phoenix: Hollinger's playoff odds. That doesn't sound like a team that should throw in the towel for good, and I sure as hell hope our players don't have that terrible attitude that some of you guys do.

i dunno if we could have gotten a solid starting center for the future in place of a scorer who has absolutely no defense, i would have taken it. hard decision though, martin is a good scorer, i've noticed he hasn't been diving into players for the call as much either.

its not simple either way, gortat fills an ENORMOUS goal, a big center who can block shots and run the floor, we still have a gaping hole at the 5 and where are we going to fill it? there aren't really any other good centers out there that will be available

    o well

We have too many "I give up fans". Rockets just need a good C that can play D and rebound the damn ball. I don't who else is left that can fit the bill but Morey needs to give this roster the C it needs. Anyone know when the team will be granted the medical exemption?

I'm with you. We have a good mixture of young, upside players and veterans, and the playoffs are still obtainable. To me it sounds like Morey wants to retool instead of totally rebuild. He admits he's just like a fan. I think he's going to try hard to get us back in the mix instead of starting from the ground up and waiting another 5+ years to be legitimate again.

It is not that, we are going to waste their primes as we continue to wallow in mediocrity.....

    Go young, and go potential.

Unless you feel KMart or Luis is a championship caliber superstar to build around....or can net us one.

Not funny at all, I think there is a very good chance that Martin gets traded.

Oh, come on. This is too good of a team to blow up? Did you watch them last year? This is basically the same damn team that was 42-40 last year. Yeah, we might make the playoffs as a #7 or #8 seed -- I'm not disputing that. But so what? We're not good enough to knock off any of the elite teams once we get there. Not saying you did, but I hate it when people accuse others of not being "real fans" because they would prefer temporarily failure for a better shot at success in the long run.

This isn't baseball where a team can come together and get hot at the right time and win the World Series. The core of this team just isn't good enough to seriously contend for championships. I'm not content with making the playoffs and calling it a good year -- all that matters to me is the ring. The core of Martin, Scola, and Brooks isn't good enough to get it done. You need a franchise player -- a #1.

What more should the Rockets have countered with besides Gortat for Martin? Trying to gauge his real value.

It's not too good a team to blow up. But if you want to sell pieces of the team, it's better for these pieces and the team to perform well so you can get the best value for them.

I have no doubt the team will make trades, but they'll most likely do so in an orderly fashion rather than doing a "EVERYTHING MUST GO!!!" going-out-of-business sale.

All this talk about trades, it's getting a little crazy, but I guess it's something to talk about. The Rockets have been in rebuilding mode and getting younger for the last year or two. Once Battier and Jeffries are gone, we'll be even younger. Except for Miller, no one on our team will be really old. If we keep Scola, he'll be over 30, but I don't see him losing anything for at least 4 or 5 years. I think Morey is doing a good job, it looks like he is talking to anybody and everybody, trying to improve the team. There is really nothing to indicate he is trying to make the team older.

I can agree with this. I'm not calling for them to ship out every high-priced player that we have before the deadline. If you can't get fair value for a player, there is no point in trading him. Ideally, I'd like to be able to use Martin & Scola as trade bait to move up with in the draft. I don't want the "6th best player in a 5 person draft".. we need to move up to a top 5 selection and select a difference maker, not a complimentary piece.

Yeah I agree. All we need now is a good defender in the paint and we'll be set for years to come.
