Yao's got too much pride and sense of responsibility to retire just when he's been given a new contract. He'll try to get back out there, though I don't know how wise that decision would be.

Yeah me too. Its disrespectful to Yao. I remember when he said that in his culture it would be like calling RudyT "Rud"

U never hear people say "Ming", just "Yao" or "Yao Ming" and I understand the reason is because in Chinese culture it's the family that's more important (which is why it's first).

But why is "Ming" inappropriate....I mean people say "Hakeem" instead of "Olajuwon" or "Chase" instead of "Buddinger"

This is why Yao is so damn special, he is a realist and is a very humble person. I believe he will come back strong and this will be a special ride for all true Rockets fans. I can't wait to see the team down here in the RGV.

This quote brings back memories of Ralph Sampson, the lost legend from the last generation.

My gut tells me that the increased level of talent around Yao this season will allow him to FINALLY experience a season that reflects the expectations fans have had of Adelman's "system". If the players can be on the same page from day one (hoping the Miller's presence and experience under Adelman is effective) and they revive their pride in excellent team defense, I think the load will not be on Yao as in past years. He is the "center" of the team, no doubt, but if everyone is being attentive, there should be a lot more easy baskets than in the past -- although, I do remember a lot of blown layups last year. (GOT to make those layups! Or better yet, dunk whenever possible with BOTH hands!) As long as Yao is healthy, my gut says, "Fun season ahead!"

no. every team in the NBA has some story like this. think of grant hill he could have been one of the greatest. think of ralph sampson who could have been one of the greatest. len bias who would have been one of the greatest. so many athletes... such a waste.

but that's sports. it's not about potential it's about achievement. it's not about being the best but delivering when it counts and fate/luck/karma/God/whatever else it is that allows a man to achieve something great.

this article can suck it because it acts as if Yao is done and this is his last season. there's no logical reason why Yao cant get back to 100% if he and Houston manage his recovery.

I'm looking forward to seeing his progress through the season and watching this team play it's going to be a hell of a season

Time has gone by so fast. Seems like yesterday I was logging on to that new sensation you tube and watching "the tale of yao ming" and the one of the chinese kids sing backstreet boys.

    21 gun salute to yao.

You are aware that by Chinese culture, they place an individual's name backwards right? So technically, his name is Ming Yao. Ming is a common first name in China. Just saying.

I'm sure he knows that. While there's nothing wrong with the author writing "Ming" instead of "Yao" on occasion because Ming is part of Yao's full name, but I do tend to side with durvasa in that it just sounds weird reading it when we're so used to just calling him Yao. You rarely hear anybody addressing him as Ming.

I am almost positive that was a season that we generally played really well against the Spurs. I remember we beat them twice, missing TMac once and Yao the other time. I know I'm kinda of jumping ahead of myself here, but I wonder if we could have made it to the championship by taking out Golden State in round 2 and then the Spurs in the WCF.

How can you be sure we're not doing it backwards over here instead? :)

Kermit Washington? It's hard for me to believe that name gets casually tossed out.

It was a tragedy, and an epic glory for a man that has two rings. RudyT was one hell of a player though, and few remember.

I'm beginning to think Yao needs the most disgusting PR guy/agent in the world because him being honest really isn't helping Les.

I do think he was addressing playing for the CNT with his comments, but if he's going Ted Williams on the NBA Stern's going to have a stroke.
