We also have to take into account that 40% of that money goes to payroll taxes. He has $7.5 million. If he spent half that money, then he has like $3.75 million to retire on. $3.75 mil isn't really alot to retire on at 26. If he lives to 80 yrs old, it is $69k/yr. $69k may be nice for a middle income retirement now, but with inflation $69k in his older years would be like $40k now.

I doubt it. Roy isn't projecting any optimism at all about returning this year. Before this "indefinite"announcement, his mood about coming back was already down in the dumpster.

I think he feels very bad about not being able to fulfill his end of the bargain after getting the giant contract. There is no indication at all the situation will turn hostile this year or ever. Roy says he and the organization are exploring various unspecified surgical options.

Realistically, if Roy has some kind of major surgical procedure in the next 2-3 months, his target date for return might be training camp in September 2012.

Now it's really sad looking back at that playoff series against Portland two years ago. Both teams had so much potential and seemed right on the verge of contention. Now two years later the two best players on those teams are no longer relevant in the league...

He has to watch the clippers on his boat, and all the beautiful women leave.

Somehow I can't see Roy doing that. Not that he can't as much as he wouldn't consider that enjoyable. He wants to be in the NBA, or at least play professionally somewhere overseas.

This probably helps them. It hurt Portland more with him going in and out with the bad knees. Now they don't have to worry about that and Wes Matthews is flat out balling. Don't forget Rudy too. He can help fill the void.

Sucks for Portland and Oregon sports fans in general, but they do have the Oregon Ducks so life is not too bad for them.

cant he go the Microfracture route to rebuild the cartilage? Recovery would take a good 2-3 years for him but i think he would eventually be able to revive his career.

Too bad so many teams and players opt for quick-fix partial-cartilage removal scope surgery. Gets them back on the court in no time at all, but leaves them vulnerable to major problems like this down the road.

Next stop: Microfracture surgery, probably. Implant some new cartilage and cross his fingers. He's young, though, so there's some hope.

It's been reported that Roy has almost no meniscus left in his knee and that lack of cushion basically creates a bone on bone impact every time he runs or jumps.

Unlike cartilage issues which have surfaced in older players which have been successfully treated with microfracture, there is no such procedure for meniscus issues.

In microfracture surgery, doctors drill tiny holes into the bone surrounding the injury and flood the injured area with blood and bone marrow, which releases cartilage-building cells. The newly created cartilage is more fibrous than natural cartilage which is why it takes players so long to get comfortable playing on a repaired knee, as it acts and feels differently.

For Roy, unfortunately there is not a similar proven treatment for his condition.

The Blazers are hopeful that something can be found to help Brandon get past this, but as the days and issues continue there is more and more doubt that Roy will ever return to form; the Blazers remain optimistic.

I promise you that Brandon Roy will get his money. If you think he is going to leave 80 million on the table you are insane.

Nobody is insane. Who said anything about him giving up $80 million? If/when Roy retires, he'll get the vast majority of his money and the Blazers will (hopefully for them) save a few million.

Unless they come up with some new miraculous procedure, Roy doesn't have much hope. Maybe after surgery he can try again in 2012. That's a lengthy rehabilitation for a slim chance of success. It's all up to him and the doctors.
