Okay, here's a huge blockbuster idea. These things are notoriously difficult to get done, but I think I've finessed it to the point where it might work.

    Rockets Receive:
    Luol Deng (SF, Bulls)
    Marcin Gortat (C, Magic)
    Brandon Bass (PF, Magic)
    Larry Hughes (expiring, SG, Knicks)
    $797K trade exception (Magic)

Why the Rockets do this: Deng fills our need for a good wing who can create and shoot. Gortat gives us a decent, not-too-expensive backup center for Yao (would average a double double and 2+ blocks multipled out to starting minutes). Bass solves the question of what to do with Scola, as a cheaper, younger option to back up Landry.

    Magic Receive:
    Kirk Hinrich (G, Bulls)
    Joey Dorsey (C, Rockets)
Second round draft pick (first round if that doesn't cut it), Rockets

Why the Magic do this: They need a young guard who can shoot from range in the back court with some consistency. That's Hinrich. Chicago has little use for Bass or Gortat (they want expiring contracts), so this is a good way to get him from them. Dorsey cheaply fills the small minutes Gortat and Bass were getting, and the second round pick helps them down the road. Hinrich is a fairly unsavory contract, but his pay goes down over the next two seasons, not up, so the Magic save money in the long run compared to Bass + Gortat.

    Chicago Receives:
    Eddy Curry (expiring, C, Knicks)
    Luis Scola (expiring, PF, Rockets)
    Chase Budinger (SF, Rockets)

Why the Bulls do this: Giving up Deng is tough, but they really need cap space for this off-season. Budinger gives them a cheap, productive shooter off the bench to take some of the sting, and Scola gives them a good PF option to re-sign in the off-season if things aren't going their way. Most importantly, they dump Hinrich's contract and don't take back any money or totally wreck this year's team.

    New York Receives:
    Tracy McGrady (expiring, SG, Rockets)
    Adonal Foyle (expiring, C, Magic)

Why the Knicks do this: New York covets Tracy McGrady as a player, for whatever godforsaken reason. This way, they don't have to give up anything of value to get him, just expiring contracts of bad players. They still get their cap room, but they also get to try out T-Mac and see if they want to re-sign him in the off-season. Adonal Foyle is a throw-in to make the money work.

    http://games.espn.go.com/nba/tradeMachine?tradeId=yzfob3t

    Houston 2010-11 lineup:
    PG: A. Brooks/K. Lowry
    SG/SF: L. Deng/S. Battier/T. Ariza
    PF: C. Landry/B. Bass/C. Hayes
    C: Y. Ming/M. Gortat

That is one deep roster. Expensive. But deep.

You can also get the above trade done by splitting it in two, by the way--first T-Mac to the Knicks for expiring contracts, then a three-way with Orlando and Chicago.

You have to throw in Jermaine Taylor and fiddle with some small trade exceptions, however.

So that could make it easier to get done if New York and Chicago come into conflict over Chicago gaining cap space to compete for free agents (what NY doesn't know can't hurt them.)

    Curry isn't expiring.

He has a player option, and he's using it.

Ah. My mistake. Well, plenty of other expiring fodder on their roster.

I think the Bulls is our perfect trade partner right now...the only player I also think on the Wizards right now is Mike Miller

    I still think
    TMac + someone <=> B.Miller + J.James + someone
is a good trade for both sides...
But I also know that low-risk Morey will not agree...

i would accept an offer of miller, thomas, and salmons for tmac and cook.

all of those incoming players would be a nice fit. however i would ask for their first round pick.

also, i see no future for resigning thomas here since we have scolandry. since a lot of teams are interested in him, i would swing a 3 team deal where we send him for a garbage expiring and another first round pick. for example:

    chicago gets: tmac, cook
    portland gets: thomas
houston gets: miller, salmons, blake (on the condition that we cut him and he returns to the blazers), 2 first round picks (bulls, blazers).

The Bulls don't want to take back any 2010-11 salary, since they expect to be major players in free agency this summer. Trading John Salmons, who may or may not opt out of the $5.8M owed to him next year, is the primary motivation to the Bulls making a McGrady trade in the first place. In the alternative, they'd like to dump Hinrich's salary (but the Rockets apparently aren't interested) or, if they're desperate, Deng's big-money deal.
That's pretty much what I said in my post earlier in this thread.

However, the Blazers don't seem willing to part with their first rounder (they're currently 8th in the West, meaning that'll be a mid-first round pick), instead offering up two second rounders for Thomas. Also, I wouldn't mind getting Outlaw plus the picks. He's an intriguing talent, and the Rockets might at least want to take a "free look" at him and decide if he's worth re-signing this summer.

I doubt the Bulls give up their first rounder. In their minds, they'd be giving up a couple of valuable assets (Miller and Thomas) to rid themselves of Salmons's not-too-bad salary next season. Trading a first rounder on top of that may be too much for them.

But, hey, if Morey could get 2-3 pretty good players (only one with salary beyond this season), plus two first round picks for McGrady's contract, I'd be thrilled.

I'm down for that and I think it's very realistic. If they could then swing Battier or Ariza and Scola or Landry for a scoring 2, we would be in good shape. I think Thomas has the potential to be a perfect complement to Yao.

would you be willing to take back Hinrich if it netted the Bulls first rounder and got you under the cap this year?

something like Miller, Hinrich for McGrady, Cook.

Unfortunately, the only thing that really interests me from this trade scenario is Brad Miller.

He addresses our size issue for this season, but for long-term plans, he isn't a priority.

I just saw the following post over on the RealGM Chicago board. The quoted post below is not written by me, this is from a prolific poster over there by the name of JOHN.

I actually don't know which this "third team" might be. Any guesses?

As always with forum posts like this, it could easily be fiction so take it for what it's worth:

"Rumor:Bulls-Rockets in 3 way with team

New postby JOHN on Sun Feb 14, 2010 4:48 pm
    Hi everyone.

I just got back from the game of PAOK Thessaloniki vs. BC Marroussi.I was at PAOK Sports Arena at the VIP club and I happened to get introduced to 3 scouts of NBA teams that were here(Athens-Thessaloniki) for the weekend.

Well apparently our Bulls and Rockets are trying to get in a 3 way deal as I learned from the scout of that 3rd team.Chicago wants Luis Scola in addition to Tracy McGrady and the other team is trying to get Kirk Hinrich with Thomas. He told me that Chicago wants to unload Hinrich,Miller,Salmons and Thomas in this 3 way.Houston wants a certain player from that 3rd team(they arent warming to Kirk) and Chicago wants to find a backup expiring center from another deal(Jerome James).

He basically told me that talks have been going on since yesterday and to put it in his words "it's a mess".

I cannot name the team the scouter works for but I think most of you will figure it out.also I know there is anticipation for the deadline like every year and this is the first time I get info from someone that close to a team.

All three scouts havent heard anything about Boozer nor Amare and the Bulls.

    These are TALKS...please remember it.Not a a done deal.BUT discussions.just relaying the info.

    JOHN"
