Nice analysis, but I wanted to clear up one small error.

The "incomplete roster charges" must occupy all roster spots not occupied by current players or cap holds BEFORE factoring in potential outside free agents. In the case of your projections, you need to replace Howard's salary with another roster charge and THEN try adding in Howard's salary.

Think of it this way: NBA teams must have 13 players on their roster. The incomplete roster charges already assume you want to add a 13th player (in this case, Howard) and are used to occupy the other 12 spots.

(Also, the 12th spot on your list is technically another incomplete roster charge and not the second round pick. Unsigned second rounders don't count against the cap; roster charges do.)

    Thanks. :)

You're a legend BimaThug. I was wondering about applying the cap holds BEFORE.

That does alter the numbers a little (+490,180=$4,418,064 needed) but I think the overall premise and options are still valid.

Not necessarily a contradiction. We sign Howard outright. But he may want Asik and an upgrade at pf, so Lin would be the next trade piece.

Because our players are all signed to value contracts (you may be able to argue for the moment that Lin is overpaid) they can all be moved.

You can only get the Clippers to the table for a sign and trade if Paul is leaving and if they see that we can clear out our cap and create space to sign him outright. We could do that. That would obviously involve trading Asik away, something Dwight allegedly doesn't want to do but if push comes to shove he'd agree to it to play with his bud CP3.

So you use leverage. Start talking turkey with Boston. Lin/Asik/something else for Rondo/CLee. Rondo/CLee would bring back a lot of future draft pick value if farmed out to a team with cap space like Atlanta or Utah or Milwaukee, etc. Once the Clippers see that we are intent on moving both guys out and they know we can then move the other rookies and guaranteed salaries for future picks, etc. the threat of Paul walking from them for nothing should bring them to the table. (If it doesn't, it just doesn't. Clips are known for their stupidity.) I don't know for sure if Lin will be attractive to the Clippers or not but that's where the S&T will have to start and it will have to end without Asik. Remember we have no reason to do a S&T with the Clippers unless it leaves us in a better position. Having Asik plus draft picks plus one of the young PFs left on the roster leaves us in a better position for the future with the ability to trade into a top-notch PF if one comes on the market.

If we are willing to clear cap to sign Paul outright and wind up with Paul plus the future draft pick value we would get by trading all our guys out for cap space, then for the Clippers to be granted a S&T the incentive for us has to be a S&T is better than all the future draft pick value we can obtain by trading out Asik/Lin/DMO/TJones, etc. etc.

So moving back to the S&T of CP3. Once again using the 50% rule, we only have to send out $13.6 in salary. That can be sent different places, etc. So you start hammering on a S&T with the Clippers. Lin/RWhite/nonguaranteed guys for CP3. Perhaps Utah steps in for Lin and Clips get some nongauranteed guys and a huge TPE. Whatever. Once the light goes there's many different ways to construct the trade using the 150% rule while retaining Asik.

I have no idea whether Lin would be involved in a trade for Howard or in a separate trade. That would be speculation on my part and I'm not going there so that people don't misconstrue what is my opinion and what it was that I was told. I just know that if Howard is here Lin's days here may be numbered.

Thanks for the clarification 'Ron from the G'.

So Lin is not necessarily linked to a trade for Howard.

Lin's days are numbered. Could that number be about 750 days from now?

Not even to upgrade the PF spot. If the Rockets want a bench next season they'll need to move Lin's $8 million contract for cap space or players.

It's too dangerous to give a player so much control over the roster. What's next? Coaches?

What does he or CP3 know about constructing a championship roster?? We don't want Chris Paul 2.0 in Houston.

Let Dwight be a player and let Morey be the GM.

The Rockets will presumably have T. Jones/DMo, Beverley, Smith, Aldemir and Garcia off the bench next year along with any D-League prospects they'll look at. That's a perfectly fine bench; two of those players started for us in the playoffs.

The Rockets are signing Garcia with the room exception. That amount wouldn't have even gotten Delfino or Brooks this season.

Aldemir will likely collect DNPs in his rookie year. He's a project in the Turkish league where often plays 8 mins in a game.

To me, that translates to DH cares about himself more than the team. He wants max money but plays less minutes, talking about work ethic, hmmm.

This is a surprise to you? We know what we're getting.

Honestly, less minutes is good for a big man. We want him in there as a strategic bomb at the right time.

    Gotta love Steve Nash.
