I believe his expiring contract was pretty much worthless to the Rockets, wasn't it?

Lowry and a combination of the two. Otherwise who is CP3 passing to?

Joining the chorus. It sure did look pretty lopsided at the time, when it looked like we'd be able to swap for a 2011 lotto pick and Jordan Hill was getting 20 minutes a night, and Jeffries was even getting spot minutes as a specialist. Now, though, with Hill in Adelman's doghouse and repeatedly criticized for not understanding what he's supposed to do and the 2011 swap now worthless, it doesn't look like NY lost much.

It is whorthless when you're trying to save money (check), when there are plenty of bigger expirings out there (check) and when a lot of team have big TPE's (check).

I think Kevin Martin, Luis Scola, Kyle Lowry are the three players that should be kept.

They better get something done. I don't think interest in the Rockets in Houston has been this low in about 20 years. Nobody gives a rats ass about the Rockets anymore.

Those factors definitely hurt the value of an expiring contract, sure -- but there wasn't much around at the time of the McGrady trade that could compare to it. The large TPE you see are mostly the product of this past summer, post-McGrady deal. (Cavs-LBJ; Raptors-Bosh; Suns-Amare)

Worthless in what regard? The Rockets weren't clearing cap space, dollar-for-dollar, by letting it expire if that's what you mean. I can't recall how much space we would have gotten, but it wasn't enough for a max contract IIRC.

Some people hold expiring contracts in high regard. I tend to agree with you that their value is mostly overstated; they're good for helping to match salaries, but plenty of teams have them.

Of course, the other side of the argument is that you never know when a team will be looking to make a cost-cutting move and you need those contracts to be in the position to take advantage of it. Troy Murphy's expiring contract, for example, was an integral part in the Carmelo deal because it meant considerable savings for Denver after this year. Without that contract, how far does NJ-DEN get in discussions? I'm not sure.

I just heard Chris Broussard say on ESPN that Houston is still in the hunt for Carmelo, but what got me is that he says Melo lives in Houston in the offseason? Really?!?!?!? I hope AB is the first to go, he'll never play defense in any system.

I'm watching as well and he did not say that. You heard him talking about Camby living in H during the off-season.

Houston is mentioned by every analyst during deadline talk right now. GET R DONE, MOREY!

Give me one good reason why a SG that is an average defender at best and has been an injury risk in all but 2 years of his 7 year career, a PF on the wrong side of 30 and a PG that averages 11/6/4 while shooting 40% from the field and 35% from behind the arc "should be untouchable" when we're talking about getting the 2 things we need the most: 1. defensive presence in the paint and 2. a legit go-to guy?

The player on the other side of 30 will be consistent till the day he retires. He should not be traded. Lowry, Hayes, Scola the pulse of the Rockets.
