A woman was sexually assaulted and beaten. That doesn't factor into the fact that Egyptians got rid of a dictator who used to be their leader. Would Mubarak have prevented it somehow?

I can't believe you are mocking an innocent woman being attacked by a group of men. Maybe I'm reading it wrong. But I like to think most people are more gentlemanly than that, and would hope most people were brought up better by their parents.

If you weren't, more's the pity for you.

Not sure what portion of the population shares that view, or what portion of lawyers (having a professional degree doesn't guaranteed you rationality)

There is no denying people in the Arab world view Israel negatively, I am just questioning how many of them would think attacking Ms. Logan was justified by their negatie attitude toward Israel.

In any case, I go back to the same question: If we don't like Egyptian people's attitudes toward Israael being what they are, how do we propose to deal with it?

The Mubarak autocrat route frankly didn't work all that well even when Mubarak was in power. Al Qaeda grew out of Egypt's prisons. The government's relationship with Israel did nothing to prevent the population current hatred toward it.

It would seem that having Egypt move toward a representative democracy could at least possibly change things for the better. First it takes away the we are oppressed because "US/Israel is propping up our oppressor" excuse for hating Israel. Second, a parliamentary democracy can force people (especially leaders of political factions) to think about whether their beliefs are rational and practical.

It's easy to chant death to Israel when it means nothing (cuz Mubarak won't start a war with Israel), it's another to do the same when your words/votes count for something and an actual war (with actual Egyptians most likely actually dying) is the price you'd pay for implementing such belief.

Now, of course there's the risk of enough crazy people actually gaining enough power to do something crazy, but I think that's a failry remote possiblity. There are enough rational people out there-- the ones who rescued Ms. Logan from the mob, for example-- who would work hard to prevent such a scenario. Also, this is where, I think, the military would be keeping a lid on such possibilities (and where the U.S.'s influence on the Egyptian military (via foreign aid money and otherwise) could come in to play).

One more thing: The Israel Palestinian issue needs to be resolved. Israel cannot keep on bulldozing Palenstinian homes, punishing the entire population of Gaza, and doing other things that Arabs and even many Americans find distasteful and expect people not to react to such things. I think autocrats like Mubarak have been a crutch for the Israelis, preventing Israel from having to deal with the consequences of their actions. Maybe it will now dawn on them that what they do might affect their diplomatic relations with their biggest neighbor because Egypt's diplomatic policy will now somewhat reflect Egyptian public opinion.

And why did you post the reference to that thread title in response to this news?

I actually did not put that much thought into it. It was just an instinctive reference, much like some of yours in the GARM that are meant to be sarcastic.

But it is evident that more freedom does not necessarily mean everything will be better. More freedom can mean good or bad things (lack of security).

So your "instintive" response to Ms. Logan's attack/sexual assault is to make a sarcastic remark?

Do you think the same applies to black people in South Africa?

Don't pretend to be holier than thou (especially after the nonsense you have already posted on this thread). Making that remark doesn't mean I don't feel sorry for her.

You are just digging your hole of idiocy deeper. Stop trying so desperately to appear smarter than you are. Stick to making non-subtle gay references in basketball threads.

No one knows how you really feel, but your first words on the topic was to mock "let freedom ring." This we know.

Gees guys, I was taking a short break during a busy day at work. Saw the thread and wanted to post something quick. Now I just realized how fvked up that was. I was taking a shot at the Obama administration’s mishandling of the Egyptian situation. Because of our government's indecisiveness, we lost vital opportunity to use our influence to maintain stability there. He stayed way too long on the "freedom", "democracy" moral high ground without any clear strategy. Instead of telling Mubarak publicly to "listen to the people", he could’ve told him the exact same thing in private and pressure him to make a concession to calm down the crowd early on. Our government should have sent a clear message to the Egyptian people, telling them that we stand for freedom and democracy, but we only support peaceful and orderly transition. Now the situation in Egypt, our most important ally in the region, is way out of hand. We better hope whoever their next leader maybe, is on our side.

Moral diplomacy has no place in this world, those who are in charge should know better

Yes. So? You have been repeating this like three times, and the only one who applauded you for trying to use it to smear me is adeelsiddiqui, who is obviously full of hate.

You, on the other hand, came into this thread, not knowing any facts, but spouting off that this must have been the pro-Mubarak people because the anti-Mubarak people would think about their country's public image in the second before sexually assaulting a woman and then stop. Black/white thinking and stupidity at its best.

Who are you to talk and to pretend that you are holier than thou?

this is one of the more offensive things i've read on cf.net, which is saying something. you've managed to insult not only AWT, but folks on the spectrum generally, and those who love/work with them.

    thou hast truly beclowned thyself.

*******, who would have thought that a random german korean guy anonymously harassing muslims on the houston rockets internet site for years would have to suffer such an indignity after provoking somebody repeatedly - and oh my word, the collateral damage, your delicate ears are singed!
