He's my favorite Texans of all time. It would kill me to see him retire in another uniform, but the Texans should not hesitate to trade him if this lingers.
From my understanding, the Texans would take an immediate hit of 11,964,166 which is his remaining bonus money and owe Andre nothing else. If he ever decided to come back in the league, he'd have the same contract with the Texans that he does now meaning he's be under contract for 3 more years even if he retired for a year only then it would be fully not guaranteed. In theory, the Texans would gain like 3 mil worth of cap space.
The team could sue to get that money back, but it would count against the cap this year no matter what.
Maybe AJ is going through a "Barry Sanders" thought process. Maybe he is contemplating retirement. He's been at it a while now. If he does he may have to give the Texans some money back but so did Barry when he left the Lions.
Play or retire. I really don't care. Unless the Texans get a 1st or 2nd or 3rd or something lopsided in their favor, tell Andre to play or retire. We are in a unique position as a franchise where the lines are blurred between rebuilding and reloading. Either way, Andre helps us as a contributor or retired player . Don't just give him away like he has leverage.
I agree. Originally I felt for him, and saw where he was coming from. But then I thought about the other vet star WR's that have suffered just as much if not more than him. Case and point, Calvin Johnson.. He has been in the league for a while, widely regarded as one of the best WRs in the game, and has absolutely nothing to show for it. In fact, he was part of the only 0-16 team in NFL history. I believe Brandon Marshall as well as Larry Fitzgerald have also put up with less than stellar supporting casts. I did empathize with him but now he is being a baby and holding us back. I say trade for a younger receiver with some promise.
I think players should get everything they can get. Fans will turn on them in a second and teams won't wait a second to cut them.
Well losing over a million dollars in skipping OTA's and mini camps isn't exactly the best way to "get everything they can get". He's still going to be on the Texans this year and they are still going to cut him afterwards.....all he did was lose money by throwing this little temper tantrum.
For everyone saying trade him, hasn't it been established already that the Texans would incur a large cap hit if they did that?
So are you saying he cares about the money or doesn't care about the money? Andre can do whatever he wants to do. I am not going to begrudge him. The Texans have not proven to be a good franchise yet.
It is weird to throw away a million dollar bonus. I think he is just tired of losing and is not thinking about anything.
Re-do the contract, come to an agreement, and be done with this freak show circus. He's a hall-of-famer. Figure out how to make the money work so he can retire a Texan and we can become championship contenders while he's still playing and let's get back to football.
He doesn't want to get cut after this year and his goal was to force the Texans into giving him a new deal.....he failed so all he ended up doing was costing himself money. It seems he got some more bad advice from his stupid uncle.
I think he dumped him and hired a new agent before getting his deal done last time. I honestly think he is tried of losing, you disagree?
According to recent reports, he's back. I highly doubt the "tired of losing" BS is valid because there's literally nothing that can be done about that right now other than Andre getting his ass into camp and helping the team get ready for the season. He's not doing anything to help the team win by missing camp and he's completely untradeable this year and will almost certainly get cut next year so there's no way he can get off the team faster than he's already going to. The ONLY thing he could even potentially get by holding out is a new deal like he got last time he held out only this time, the team wants him gone after this year is over so it's not happening.
