Miami looks to have 6 players above minimum wage

    lebron
    wade
    bosh
    chalmers
cap space signing one(likely mike miller)
someone else using their available capspace(maybe derek fisher)

so that means they will have 9 players for the minimum.

veterans minimum will be 1.3 million so they will in effect have 1.3 x 9 = $12 million in trading salary on december 15th which is the first day that newly signed fee agents can be traded.

with that salary they can target players who essentially a team will be willing to get rid of for expirings, someone like okafor, calderon, diop, etc...

they could get elton brand or okafor, get the trading team to waive all players recieved and then sign up everyone back up again.

or they could get diop + calderon and do the same thing.

Miami could have a really good team come playoff time since with their 9 vet minimum contracts, they can receive 15 million in salary from trades during the season.

ending contracts isn't enough to get a good player on a big contract. it's a start but you need a sweetener like a young player or a pick. they have no sweeteners.

for most contracts you need sweetners but some contracts are so toxic that a team will just be glad to get rid of them.

okafor and turkoglu come to mind immediately.

So what team is going to have the roster space to do a 9 for 1 trade?

You have to have roster spots open to pull a deal like that.

Will there be a team with nine roster spots available on December 15th?

With that in place, though I can't stand Lexus', I still like all the holiday ads that they run with big red bows on their cars around those times. So there's that.

my understanding of the CBA is that you can waive players immediately after the trade, you don't have to have roster spots for the players for this trade.

That only works in the offseason. Not sure when the offseason-ending cutoff date is.

I just looked it up and you are right

A team cannot acquire players when they do not have room on their 15-man roster, even if they intend to waive an incoming player immediately. For example, a team with 14 players cannot trade one player for three, while simultaneously waiving an incoming player to remain at 15 players. Note: it is possible to work around this restriction by waiving a current player, executing the trade, waiving one of the incoming players, and then re-signing the original player.

mmm they probably can't get huge contracts like okafor then, they may still do a 3 for 1 or 4 for 1, putting guys like calderon in play

or maybe even dare i say it, boobie gibson

We have gone off the deepend. 9 for 1 player trades for other teams.

Not to mention that if you trade a player and he's cut by the other team, you can't re-sign him for 30 days (I think). So you'd have to play with 6 guys (and maybe a bunch of 10 day contract guys) for a month before you could get your players back.

it's just not needed this year.

they have enough room available to sign a decent rotation of vet minimum players before they run out of cap space. they can choose from:

shaq, jefferson, haslem, ridnaur, z, brad miller, tmac, watson, house, bell, etc...choose any 3 to go with the 5 guys they already have and you've got a pretty good rotation. they just have to hope no one gets injured.
