Personally, I'd rather pay him and hope a contender needs a SF rather than literally giving him away + sweeteners, like the report here is suggesting. There are "contenders" that could use him and have the contracts necessary to do so. Dallas, Atlanta, Utah and New York are a few examples, off the top of my head. At the very least Charlotte could gain some leverage by tossing this bogus 'Wallace + _____ for your crap' approach and instead make the foundation for any discussions 'Wallace for expirings + sweetners'. As for Wallace on the Rockets -- I agree it's a poor fit and not worth considering.
The best lshut em down wings are possibly Barnes and Artest, However both of them miis an offensive game. Waalce and Iggy are the next best wing defenders out there. And guess what? They can score as well and are excellent rebounders too. Plus Iggy can create for others too. We are going to have to overspend if we want to win. Look at Lakers, Magic, Boston and Dallas. The Big 3 in Miami sacrifieced $15 mil in total per year to make it work. Otherwise Miami would be staring at $80K plus roster. The point is we cant be stingy and expect to take away the trophy. We are going to have to take on Wallace type of contracts. We cant wait a millenium to draft multi-dimensional players like Walalce, Iggy or J.Smith or get cheaper poor mans versions of them. I am sick and tired of Morey trying to it cheap way by trying to find a diamond int he rough. It is costing us big time. Yes, Brooks, Landry, Lowry, Lee, Scola, Martin, Patterson were great pick ups. But none of them are anywhere near close to G.Walalce, Iggy or J.Smith. But then again you guys think Hill is the next Bosh and Bud is the next Larry Bird and Brooks is better than Nash and Kidd combined.. So I can see why some would be opposed to the real deal in G.Walalce. This board is notorious for overrating scrubs and underrating actual talent - the real deal.
You know who thought exactly the way you do? You know who never hesitated to overpay for talent that he thought could help his team win? Isiah Thomas, that's who. And THAT turned out great, right? Looks like you're in GOOD company.
There is no point in acquiring a second-tier star like Wallace or Iguodala when we don't even have a top-tier star. History shows that you need a top 10, and in most cases a top 5, player to win a championship. A lot of them have two top 10 players. Right now you could probably argue that we don't even have two top 30 players.
Gerald Wallace is so damn impactful and dynamic. He would help our team greatly, imo. If we can get a deal in place for a C, Gerald Wallace would certainly help with our small backcourt, as he can outrebound most C's from the SF spot.
For the kind of price the Cavs are discussing (i.e. salary relief), I say lets get him even if he's not a "top star." As long as Adelman is OK with it (and will not, like he did in GW's younger days, bench him), I don't mind a GW+Martin wing combo. GW can even play a little 4 given his rebounidng prowess. Sure it'll be a bit of a disruption to the current lineup, but it's not like the current rotation is beating the world anyway. Also, Denver is said to have liked GW as a potential target in a Melo trade, but Melo doesn't want to go play in Charlotte. So, he has value as a Melo trade bait (either in a long term or a rental scenario).
While I agree that I don't see much of an improvement you have to ask yourself which is worth more - Yao's expiring or Wallace? Can we get more via future trade or FA signing? Maybe but I'm not so sure. I was expecting letting it expire or using it to get back a bad contract and someone's bench player that should be a starter. I know technically Yao could come back but I really wouldn't count on that. Asset accumulation or improvements on current assets until you have enough to make the big KG move. Of course that would really stink for Williams. He'd be completely buried on the bench and we paid a good price for him.
I like how this thread went from a "Cleveland trying to get Gerald Wallace" thread into a "The Rockets should get Gerald Wallace" thread in a matter of like 3 posts. Personally, I don't see why on Earth the Cavs would want to do this deal. He would have zero impact on their season, and they are looking at a LONG road of rebuilding ahead of them. And their demand of a first-rounder on top of Wallace is just plain laughable.
Yeah, I should qualify my post by saying that if the price is right and we don't tremendously hurt our chances at acquiring a star or trading up in the draft for a guy with star potential, then I'm all for acquiring Wallace. If all it takes is Brooks and salary relief, sure. If they want much more than that, you have to be very careful that you aren't setting yourself up to be stuck with a core of Martin, Wallace, and Scola without a ton of flexibility to add better players.
dude iguodala is better than him! did i shatter you now? wallace always injured never seen him shoot a long range jump shot! no thanks
#ChrisMannixSI RT @Falb7 Have you heard anything about Gerald Wallace to Cleveland? ... I hear CLE is shopping that monster trade exception hard.
Rockets are a great offensive team, but a poor defensive team. According to Clutchfans, we need another scorer! Completely ignoring the fact that Wallace is at least 3x the offensive player Battier (and would be taking his spot in the starting lineup) is and a better defender.
Why would we go after someone that will only push us further into mediocrity? While we're at it, let's go after Iggy too! Surely a combo of Iggy + Wallace will be able to topple the Lakers, Mavs, Heat, and Celtics.
And I'm sure Toronto is doing the same thing. The buyers for those TEs? The teams losing money (huge payroll or poor revenue) and crummy season going nowhere: Almost for sure interested Milwaukee Detroit Memphis Golden State Washington Denver post-Melo Charlotte Maybe? Portland Phoenix Us
I would trade Yao's contract/Battier for Gerald Wallace in heartbeat. He's athletic, can drive and dunk, plays better defense than Battier, can block shots, hustles like a madman, and averaged double digit rebounds last season. He would be the perfect 2nd banana, with KMart being the 3rd complimentary to Chris Paul .
what this team needs is a wing defender that can cover for a leaky defense, hustle and provide blind side shot blocking, and can also put up a few points consistently..... P.S. If anyone thinks current contracts won't be indexed to salary cap purposes for a lower CBA, I have a bridge in San Francisco to sell you, barely used.
yep also 10 rebounds, shot 48% from the field, 37% from 3 and outstanding defense. Remember that the Bobcats were best defensive team in the league last season and he was the centerpiece. I think he would fit the Rockets perfectly.
