Lillard is a better defender and he's more poised. It really doesn't matter where you're picked especially in a weak draft. Kyrie was the #1 pick by default because there was nobody else aside from Derrick Williams remotely worthy of taking with the #1 pick. What matters most is playing up to being taken #1. Of course Irving showed why he was worthy of being taken #1 but if the 2012 draft was re-done it's clear Lillard would be taken #1 as well.

Back to the original debate though... I'm not saying Lillard is better than Irving but I do know Lillard is just as talented and also has a chance to become a superstar as well.

Irving had a really good rookie campaign as did Lillard. The difference is Irving improved from his rookie campaign and put up a great season and got national recognition his 2nd year so the popular belief is Irving is better. I think Lillard can follow suit.

Its debatable who is the better defender. Neither plays defense.

It is definitely not clear who would be taken with the #1 pick after just one season. In all honesty I would select Andre Drummond with the number 1 pick now considering the unreal potential shown in his per36 numbers and the fact he is a C.

Yes sir. That is correct. For the record, I do like Chandler quite a bit. I would give him up for LMA.

Unlike most rookies, Lillard played a whopping 39 minutes per game. His stats are slightly inflated as a result. Compare his and Irving's per 36 minute numbers and it's not even close. As a rookie, Irving scored 18.5ppg in 31 minutes per game. He gets past his defender more easily than Lillard and draws more fouls, Lillard often just settles for a three pointer. Lillard is a good scorer, Irving is an elite scorer.

Lillard had a fantastic year, but it was much closer to Aaron Brooks 09/10 season than either of Irving's years. Raw stats don't tell the whole story. You have to take playing time, pace, and play style into account.

Unlike most rookies, Kyrie has not played alongside another legit #1 offensive option on the level of Lamarcus yet. Put Lillard on the Cavs and give him Kyrie's touches and shots and Lillard's stats mushroom even more. Put Kyrie on Portland and he has to defer to LaMarcus a bunch and his stats take a hit.

Interesting debate. Both guys are good.

I agree with Asian Sensation though. Lillard is miles better on the defensive end. In my opinion, Irving has a serious Achilles heal to his game defensively. A deficiency so great that if he doesn't correct it he will be the best player to never win anything. He is piss poor defensively, one of the worst defenders in the whole league. Kyrie needs to improve significantly defensively to elevate his status among the best point guards of the game. If he doesn't he'll take a nosedive in a couple more seasons.

I usually agree with you but can't this time. The only thing preventing Irving from becoming a top 5 player and perennial MVP candidate is injuries. If that isn't an issue, the distance between the two will grow in coming years.

I just don't see Lillard as a superstar talent. Would be delighted to be wrong.

It's clear all you watch is the bull**** All-Star games... Lillard has all the moves and the stats to become one of the top 5 PGs in the league along with Kyrie.

And he is still only 1 year younger than him, not that it makes a difference. Oh plus Lillard was the no. 5 pick who would more than likely be no. 2 in a redraft right behind the no. 1 pick Anthony Davis. Yes, he's that good.

I watch both of them play, and try to catch both Cav and trailblazers games when I can. Lillard is actually closer to two years older than Irving than 1. He turns 23 this Summer, and Irving just recently turned 21. If you watch the two play, you can tell Irving is just the superior basketball talent. Better handles, better offensive moves leading him to score at a better per-minute basis, less reliant on the 3 pointer which helps his offensive consistency. He was also a one man show in Cleveland and was able to record a 21 PER while constantly getting the most defensive pressure. Lillard had Batum and LMA to draw attention. It's really not that close between the two players. Lillard could also drastically improve like lots of young players do but talking about right now, Irving is better and will likely continue to be better based on his talent and age.

I'd take a full season of Lillard for the next 10 years over 2/3s a season of Kyrie Irving every year.

Kyrie is made of glass. Every year its something else with that dude.

My goodness, LMA is overrated on this board. Saw him starting to revert back to LaMarcia last season.

Didn't Irving lead the league in both 4th quarter points and makes in the clutch his rookie year?

Kanter has played really well just hasn't gotten the minutes, but he's been a beast when he's gotten the opportunity. Lilliard is good but Kyrie is definitely more talented. There's a reason why he went to Duke.

JR is the most selfish, self centered, idiot in the league. I'd resign Mad Max before JR

is he? i'm not sure. i'd probably lean towards Kyrie there. but it's similar to comparing Ben Wallace and Rodman's low post moves.
