This is true - lots of people set her up as a heroine for "women's rights" and try to ignore (or don't know about) this side of her. I should hope that most people who work with Planned Parenthood today aren't eugenicists. Still, I notice that they always place their clinics in poor neighborhoods. Every time I see one, I wonder if they're trying to reduce the black and Hispanic population.
It just seems that when anyone is anti-"anything", they should do what they can to prevent that thing (whatever it is) from happening.
Omigod, wasn't going to post in this thread, but... I think you can rest easy that most people in P.P. aren't eugenicists! I thought us lefties has cornered the market on conspiracy theories, but this takes the cake. Let me tell you a story from my poor neighborhood. The other night, Mrs. B-Bob and I gave $3 to a homeless *family*. Father, mother, and three little kids. Every night San Francisco family shelters have a lottery to see who gets in for the night. They were unlucky, and they were trying to scrape together money for a cheap hotel room for the night. The guy works odd day jobs to get them money for food. We sat there on a street corner talking for a while. Literally, they are having trouble feeding their kids, clothing their kids, and obviously giving shelter to their kids. What did I most want to give this family? Yes -- condoms! Oh, have I mentioned their race? No, because it's not relevant. A lack of family planning in poor neighborhoods leads to a downward spiral of poverty and misery for the families. Poor family planning in a rich neighborhood leads to more teenagers driving SUVs, more crowded malls, and greater consumption of Coors Light on weekends. So if you are an organization that wants to help people, what neighborhoods would you target? I really think this is incredibly easy to understand.
Except there are people that dont believe in pushing their beliefs on other people... I believe what I believe and I dont feel that you or anyone else should have to believe what I believe in.... Got that straight? Im not sure i do...
No. But only because Mary Kay's cars are more of a "powder" pink as opposed to a hot pink. BTW, B-bob -- excellent post.
The same is true for the death penalty, divorce, most contraception, giving to the poor, living humbly, and many other issues. In fact the Pope and the Vatican are as clear as can be in their 100% rebutal of capital punishment in civilized countries trying to follow the will of god. Why doesn't the good Bishop push Davis (and all other US Catholic politicians that favor it) on his pro-death penalty statement just as much? Sounds to me the Bishop is trying to make political hay on one issue more than consistently push the Vatican doctrine. Now if someone, Bishop or other Catholic, follows and promotes the Doctrine consistently as far as capital punishment, abortion, and all other issues I don't have a problem with their criticism of Davis, even if it doesn't hold much weight to me. BTW--the Catholic church until well into the 20th century oppossed the inoculation of children against diseases like smallpox and polio. Doctrine is not static--especially along the lines where medical/science are involved.
Exactly - it does seem that doctrines have changed with time. (that's why some of us feel more comfortable taking the original set of "rules" in the Bible and knowing that at least no one can come along and mess with it... of course, that's a whole 'nother can of worms.) I wonder how long before they start cracking down on Catholics who favor the death penalty... though, since my husband (a Catholic who follows the extreme letter of the law) is still in favor of capital punishment, they must not have made any official proclamations on that. (Yet?) (see, I can be a "liberal" every once in a while! )
So they don't have any food or clothes, but you would most want to give them rubbers? Where would they even have sex? I thought it was tax cuts and no affirmative action that did that.
Alert; The Bible isn't supposed to be a set of rules for Christians, it is supposed to help you get a better understanding of God and help you be closer to him. You can take anything in the Bible and make some screwed up rule. That's not what it is for.
I won't speak for the bishop's motivations, but it's not like Davis is going around bragging about executions in California, saying how California is the "#1 death penalty state in the country", or speaking in front of death penalty advocates. I didn't even know they were allowed to execute people in California. Also the reason it came up was the anniversary of Roe v. Wade.
TheFreak, I wasn't looking for an argument about liberal cliches (taxes, affirmative action) when I told my little story -- I was addressing planned parenthood. Sorry. If you would have behaved differently than I did, feel free to share. Most people were passing by without speaking to them, without sharing so much as a dime. Perhaps you would have taken them to dinner and brought them under your roof. If so, I commend you; you're a rare individual, and the world needs more people like you. When I said I wished I could provide condoms, I was saying that I don't think them having another kid was going to help them feed or shelter the ones they have already. I wish you could have seen the look on this 4-yr-old boy's face, at 11 p.m. on a rather chilly night, as his father begged for money. It was the boy's embarrassment that stuck with me for some reason. As for your question, I don't know where the couple had sex -- I didn't ask them. Having three children under the age of five indicates to me that they have found some method and place that work for them.
I was just wondering why you would give them condoms B-Bob. I found that odd. The other part wasn't really directed at you...don't take me so seriously please.
Just have to point out MadMax, the technology of embryology also lets you see your baby's tail early on in development. Since we're basically lizards early on, it seems to me that we can get the pro-life movement to advance my views of lizard rights. Go little guys!
LOL MrClutch, and we were doing so well in our last conversation. You really ass-ume a lot. I've been trying to look for the good in your posts ever since I thought we had a moment yesterday. But earlier I noticed that you were corrected on your reading comprehension by rimbaud... and now you ass-ume that I have one view over another on abortion. Are you my foil? Can I insert the image of you into all of my judgments of the silliness of conservatism? Its getting to the point where you're going to have to change your moniker. And we were soooo close to getting somewhere.
