MFW, Drexler was traded TO the Rockets midseason. Drexler played for the Blazers for 40 years before he came here. Cassell won 2 championships, was drafted by the Rockets, hit arguably the most important shot in Rockets history (against the Knicks) and was constantly a playoff hero. He and Horry were traded away. I dont care that Clyde Drexler went to UH, that has nothing to do with the NBA and retiring as a Rocket. Sam Mack went to UH, big deal. What if Karl Malone got traded to the Rockets and played for 4 years and won a championship? Does he get his number retired? Why didn't they retire Barkley? What if Barkley won that year we had Pippen and then went on to play for 4 years? You retire BOTH of these guys as Rockets since they were Hall of Famers? My point about Clyde is that you dont really think of him as a Rocket first. He's always a Blazer first. Plus what memories of Clyde do you have besides that 1 year and the playoffs? If you think of Clyde as a Rocket 1st then you started watching basketball around 1995 and not before. There were SO MANY more Sam and Horry momments that people remember. Also, EVERYTIME Sam plays the Rockets, we get some I WISH SAM WERE BACK threads. I'd retire Robert Reid's jersey before Clydes.
MFW, I hope this is a joke. Clyde played for 4 years for the Rockets. SEASONS GAMES FGM-A PCT FTM-A PCT REB AST PTS AVG HOU-4 219 1446-3248 .445 900-1146 .785 1338 1192 4155 19.0 Sam played for 3 years as a Rocket. SAM CASSELL - Florida State '93 With Rockets: 1993-96 SEASONS GAMES FGM-A PCT FTM-A PCT REB AST PTS AVG HOU-3 209 704-1639 .429 539-646 .834 533 875 2109 10.1 Im not dissing Clyde. I like the guy and I'm glad he helped us, but putting him up there with Rudy T, Hakeem, Calvin Murphy, who all have each put in over 10 years + to the this city is not right. Serving Bar-B-Q doesn't count. Though I do like Clyde when he drops some rizzaps.
That's assuming you think playoff games don't count, which is a pretty silly assertion. Counting a deep playoff run in 94 (when he won a ring), Sammy played more total games in Houston than Clyde did. Oh, and titles stack up this way. Cassell 2, Drexler 1.
Cassell was the best point guard in the league last year. Better than Bibby - we saw what happened head to head in the playoffs. Better than Kidd - Kidd scores zero points against Detroit in game 7. Cassell, hurt drops like 18 on a bad hip. Better than Steve - Cassell averages 90pts against the Rockets it seems Sam was also in the Rockets 30 YR team: http://www.nba.com/rockets/history/30yr_team.html Chosen with the 24th selection of the 1993 NBA Draft, Sam Cassell (1993-1996) made major contributions to the Rockets back-to-back NBA Championship teams of 1994 and 1995. Cassell ranks among the franchise leaders in nine playoff categories and will be remembered by fans for hitting the game-winning shot in Game 3 of the 1994 NBA Finals. I bet if Sam went to UH they'd retire his number.
Geez..this is getting funnier and funnier. Cassell wasn't even the 3rd best player on either championship team. You don't retire the jersey of your best 6th man.
MadMax, Cassell had a SUBWAY Sandwich commercial plus he had Reebok commercials with his mom and Nick Van Excels mom. Remember the 'SUPA SUB'?
can't believe this thread is STILL open. there's no point to argue with someone that backs up his arguments with pointless pictures rather than logical statements
Drexler doesn't desreve to have his jersey retired because of the dumbass shot he threw up too early in the closing seconds of game 6 against Utah, which allowed Stockton enough time to come back and hit his dagger. Screw you, Clyde! Love this thread, btw.
SteddiPotatoe, I not only back up my arguments with logic, pictures, and statistics. I've dropped names, games, numbers, and NBA knowledge to this thread. Im giving you and some other TATER TOTS some lesson in Logic. Live Long and Prosper, SteddiPotatoe and use peanut oil instead of Crisco.
I've actually got a chuckle or two from this thread, but I nonetheless wanted to drop in and flame the tinman so that I could see a JBC picture posted.
Jesus Christ, I know somebody was going to bring this up, as if this thread isn't ridiculous already. OK, Sam and Clyde played within +/-20 games for the Rockets, neither of which surpassed 350 (overestimate), there happy? Sam has 2 rings, Clyde has 1 and is top 50 of all time. Sam was at best 3rd option, Clyde was at worst 2nd. If Clyde shouldn't have his # retired then Sam should because? No disrespect to Sam at all, but there are other people who have won more than his 2 rings.
MondayNightFootball90210, Then Robert Horry should be in since he has 5 Rings and Bill Walton proclaimed him to be one of 'deadliest playoff performers in history'. Here's a picture of Robert chatting it up with Luke Walton.
So what? Your're actually talking about a player's worth by commericals??? Or are you trying to be funny?
I can ALMOST hear Tinman on the phone with his loser buddies, "Doood have you seen my thread on CF.net? Ican't believe those fools keep replying. I'm going for 10,000 hits"
A commercial, shoe contract, etc shows that you have arrived. You don't see bad players like Juwan Howard get commercials do you? Let me see, almost all players who had commercials are successful players in the nba. Michael Jordan - shoes Le Bron James - Sprite Tim Duncan - Sprite Kobe (before his little skit in colorado) - Mc Donalds Hakeem - Mc Donalds Kenny Smith -TNT commercials Cuttino -has Nike ads OJ Simpson -Hertz (cutting through traffic) Robert Horry - I ROBOT Rodney McCray - Kroger Commercials So REMAX, yes commercials small or large indicate success.
