They have law and order, where did I say they didn't have that? Even in Syria the police/troops intervened (albeit late) to prevent those mobs from doing further damage. In Egypt and Jordan, all protests have even more police surrounding those protesters to prevent them from going out of control. Dude, those are police states (I mean literally police states), they wouldn't hesitate to shoot live bullets at the crowd (especially not the Syrians, they gave us "Hama rules", remember?)
From the "terrorist" CAIR... U.S. MUSLIMS REJECT VIOLENT RESPONSE TO CARTOON CONTROVERS CAIR to offer educational initiatives highlighting legacy of Prophet Muhammad (WASHINGTON, D.C., 2/5/06) - On Sunday, February 5, the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) will hold a news conference in Washington, D.C., to express the U.S. Muslim community's rejection of violence in response to the defamatory caricatures of the Prophet Muhammad published in European newspapers. WHAT: U.S. Muslims Reject Violence in Response to Cartoon Controversy WHEN: Sunday, February 5, 2:30 p.m. (Eastern) WHERE: CAIR Capitol Hill Headquarters, 453 New Jersey Avenue S.E., Washington, D.C. CONTACT: CAIR Communications Director Ibrahim Hooper, 202-744-7726, E-Mail: ihooper@cair-net.org At the news conference, CAIR will: 1) urge the American Muslim community and American media outlets to continue to show the restraint they have exhibited during this controversy, 2) reiterate the Muslim community's strong belief that the controversy is not an issue of free speech, but is instead based on concerns over hate speech and incitement, 3) condemn all violent actions by those who are protesting the cartoons, and 4) preview educational initiatives that CAIR is formulating in response to the defamatory attacks on the Prophet Muhammad. "Everyone has the right to peacefully protest defamatory attacks on their religious figures, but protestors should not reinforce existing stereotypes by resorting to violence or inflammatory rhetoric," CAIR Communications Director Ibrahim Hooper. On Friday, CAIR distributed a syndicated editorial, titled " What Would Muhammad Do?" describing how the Prophet Muhammad himself refrained from violent reactions to personal attacks and abuse. Also on Friday, CAIR urged prayer leaders at mosques nationwide to defend the Prophet Muhammad's image through educational activities, the sharing of books and other materials with friends and colleagues of other faiths and through "personal example of good character as instructed by the Prophet Muhammad."
It looks like CNN is sufficiently intimidated. http://www.cnn.com/2006/WORLD/asiapcf/02/05/cartoon.protests/ CNN has chosen to not show the cartoons out of respect for Islam.
Yet on the same site, they'll show the Kanye as Jesus cover of Rolling Stone. I guess thuggery and intimidation works.
or it relfects the general conservative nature of the US and its media. why is it an intimidation thing?
Yes. Here's some more intimidation. Danish cartoonists fear for their lives http://www.timesonline.co.uk/printFriendly/0,,1-3-2024306-3,00.html
Isn't this the same problem that Salmon Rushdee had? I mean what the heck is going on in those countries that they don't value life? DD
Ignorance, anyone? Stay in the dark and you can say anything, right (and yes I know my response is terribly late but I just now saw this nugget of wisdom)? I am sure it would not change your "view" at all if you knew that the piece was not meant to be negative about religion at all and was more about placing various found objects in urine to get atmospheric effects or that Serrano is a self-described devout Catholic? I also guess it wouldn't matter to your "no big deal" position that there was a huge controversy surrounding it's display in Australia in 1987 - that members of congress went after it, him, art, and the NEA? Or that "decency and art" went to the Supreme Court? Or that he continues to receive death threats over it?
I'm sure the Muslims would have been cool with putting Muhammad's head in a jar of urine for atmospheric effects. As far as the controversy in from piss christ, is that meant to say the Christian response has been as bad as this?
I declare JIHAD on anyone who disses Vernon Maxwell and Ralph Sampson. I'll kidnap your girl and slap them vernon style or I will tell them their dad has no money like Ralph.
i underestimated the technology of these countries, watch out japan! http://www.cnn.com/2006/WORLD/meast/02/05/kuwait.robot.reut/index.html
It goes on and on. Now a cleric in Australia is making implied threats. http://smh.com.au/news/national/dont-reprint-cartoons-sheik/2006/02/05/1139074100014.html And this guy is considered a moderate?
Sure. That is "absolutely" not what you posted about but I realize you don't need to know the specifics of an aside you brought up.
