Anything might still happen, but if you listen to his entire talk it sounds an awful lot like he anticipates only tweaks to the staff. Changing the HC would suggest a lot more than the "some areas of improvement" he mentioned.
But that's the thing - even if he does think the HC needs to be changed, he's not the type of owner that's going to say anything like that during the season. It doesn't help the team at all for the owner to come out and say, today, that he's thinking of making a HC change at the end of the year. The minute you do that, every player & coach starts worrying about their own futures instead of simply playing. Even Jerry Jones wasn't saying anything negative about the coaching situation in Dallas a week before Wade got let go.
McNair is toying with a fan revolt that will really get his attention. Corporations might buy more tickets, but he needs to prepare for some empty seats. And if that doesn't happen then the fans deserve the Texans and McNair. It is really simple. If the fans buy this nonsense then McNair will continue in La La Land. I think they will revolt if he doesn't make major chances. This team has been "close" for years. It is up to you guys in Houston with season tickets, what are you going to do?
Ladies and gentlemen, my name is Capt. McNair and on behalf of Texans Airlines I want to thank you for choosing us to fly with today. Soon, we'll reach our cruising altitude and then the seatbelt light will go out, allowing you to move around the cabin. Your co-pilot is Lieutenant Rick Smith, and our navigator for this flight is Lieutenant Kubiak. This aircraft is equipped with the best engines money can buy, and is made out of the finest synthetic materials in the world. It is solidly built and has passed every inspection for its ability to get in the air and stay there. For your information, however, the landing gear light is on, indicating they are no longer working, so we can't defend ourselves from a bad landing. Further to that, about halfway through this flight we'll probably run out of fuel, since Lt. Smith didn't adequately check out the ground crew to make sure they would fill 'er up when we were at the gate. But, no need to worry, as I have complete faith in Lt. Kubiak in that he'll get us to our preferred destination. This is his sixth flight with me, and even though we've lost more planes than we've successfully landed, our faithful customers continue to come back and support us in our efforts. As long as you're willing to pay for those tickets, we won't see a need to change a blessed thing. Now, sit back, relax, and enjoy another flight of being taken for a ride.
If no changes are made my buddy will have to find a new sucker to split the costs on season tickets. I refuse to continue wasting my Sundays on that product. Just looking at all the Texan t-shirts and jersey in my closet is nauseating at this point.
[rquoter]“If we're not getting the job done, then we'll make changes, but as long as we're managing the situation as well as you can expect, I don't think making changes advances the cause of the organization. It can be very disruptive. “The teams that consistently do well are the ones that have stability, and they give their people ample opportunity to implement their program. I'm not the kind to go from ecstasy to the depths of depression. Neither are Gary and Rick. “We're realistic about where we are. We know if we're healthy and get a few breaks we can do extremely well. On the other hand, if we have injuries and get some bad breaks, that can have an impact, too.”[/rquoter] I know this is from the beginning of last season, but I think it says a lot about Bob's mindset. He's so afraid of taking a step back that he's not willing to take a chance to move forward. A new coach may do better than Kubiak, but he also may not. Bob is content with the status quo. He doesn't like to shake things up and he's hoping that the close losses over the last 2 years are a sign that Kubiak is capable of making it over the hump. Also, I guess 5 years isn't ample enough opportunity for Kubiak to implement his program. Bob's also prone to making excuses for why we don't perform as well as we should. "Oh, we had injuries. Cushing and Brown got suspended. Demeco got hurt. Mario's been playing with a sports hernia all year. We just caught some really bad breaks." I swear, this team catches more "bad breaks" than any team in history. [rquoter]McNair didn't want to fire Dom Capers, but the Texans finished 2-14 in 2005, and he had no choice.[/rquoter] Are you ****ing kidding me? [rquoter]“He's grown as a coach,” McNair said of Kubiak. “He's a better coach now than when he started. He gets better each year. He's taking the actions I think a good coach has to take. You not only upgrade your players when you have a chance, but you also upgrade your coaching staff. “Dom didn't want to take that kind of action. He was too loyal to his assistants, and he let his assistants drag him down. I've told Gary that. I think by his actions he's shown he understands that.[/rquoter] Are you ****ing kidding me? So McNair really didn't want to fire Capers after going 2-14. Well damn, I don't think we're ever getting rid of Kubiak now. Not unless he royally ****s up. 5-11 ain't bad enough for Bob. Hell, that's better than Capers' average finish and McNair didn't really want to let him go. Bob might as well just give Kubiak another extension right now. And Capers' problem was that he was too loyal to his staff? ::cough:: Bob, look in the mirror. You're problem is that you're too loyal to your staff. And don't look now, but Kubiak's hand picked staff is dragging him down and he's dragging you down with him.
holy crap, props to dick justice for writing this one. I hope this article gets attention and goes viral. http://www.chron.com/disp/story.mpl/sports/justice/7346104.html
Great article; absolutely on target. Enough is enough. I think McNair has run out of good will. This could be the beginning of "ugly."
This probably means nothing as Kubiak is likely coming back but Mortensen/Schefter on ESPN talked about Fisher and Cowher and markets for them. For Cowher they mentioned Dolphins, Texans, Giants and for Fisher said these 3 markets could be in play: Dallas, Houston, Denver. Again, likely means nothing but thought I'd throw it out there.
I agree, that little "pep talk" last week pretty much confirms what Uncle Bob will do BUT I'm curious to see if the Texans get embarrassed sometime in the last three weeks how he handles it? Also curious to see a half empty Reliant turning on the team in week 17, how will he handle the public BASHING that will be coming?
D*mn. Seems like everyone has Fisher leaving as a Foregone conclusion Well, at least he has not been as successful as OUR COACH in the last 5 yrs. Then I might start to feel bad. Rocket River
If Cowher goes somewhere else because McNair was dragging his feet on Kubiak, I can't begin to explain how pissed off I'll be.
There is no way Kubiak cannot be fired. You have Bill Cowher possibly knocking on your door. Your team doesn't show up against its biggest rival, and it already just plain stank. Time to swing the axe Bob.
