There is just no-way that is going to happen. Too many potential stars at the top of the draft for New orleans to pass out of their position.
This would never happen. If some team was fortunate enough to be in that situation, they'd trade down and get muliple picks over multiple years. They would be set for life. Of course we had that through the exapansion process and wasted all of our opportunities so for Casserly, having two top 5 picks would be a detriment.
The Colts actually had multiple top 5 picks a couple time in the 90's. In 92 they even had the first two picks of the draft! Of course this was back when there was no salary cap. "Indianapolis was the last team to have two top-five choices -- picking Marshall Faulk with the No. 2 pick and Trev Alberts at No. 5 in 1994 - marking one of three times the Colts have had two top-five picks. The Colts had the top two picks in the '92 draft, selecting eventual busts Steve Emtman and Quentin Coryatt." http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/statitudes/news/2000/04/13/top10picks_draft/
Im not saying no team would do it. Im saying no team would consider themselves in "a bind" if they had the opportunity. If they couldnt make the salary cap work, they'd just trade the picks. We were dying in the SF game desperately hoping we'd lose to get the #1 pick. You think New Orleans would give a potential golden ticket away for David Carr? Teams salivate for the chance to draft a potential franchise player. Only Charley Casserly would think having 2 top 5 picks woudn't be a good idea. Of course that's why he's Charley Casserly.
NO would give us the 2nd pick in the draft for Carr...... only if we threw in Andre Johnson also. All we can get for Carr is a late 1st round pick or 2nd right now. He does not have great value.
Dude, that's like the kiss of death for scoops. You did a good job saying it was speculation and everything, but in case anyone missed this ... that forum post is nearly 3 weeks old, Mike Martz wasn't hired by the Saints (Sean Payton was) and I would assume that if there was some validity to it, Peter King would have written about it by now (<a href="http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/writers/peter_king/archive/" target="_blank">King archive</a>). I think the funnest part about the fantasy world of the Texans having the top two picks is this: Who goes #1? I guarantee that whoever goes #2 is pissed.
The Saints wont want to trade away Vince...just wait til they move to San Antonio, he'll be returning to his home state. OR The Saints wont want to trade away Leinhart...just wait til they move to LA, he'll be returning to his home state.
It would take Carr and Andre or Carr and Dunta to maybe even have a shot at getting the number 2 pick. Then you have 2 players signing for close to 90 million bucks. It won't happen.
What a joke this speculation is. The rumor I heard was David Carr and Dominick Davis for N.O.'s #2 pick. Hogwash. Maybe the Saints should offer Aaron Brooks and Deuce McAlister for the Texans #1 pick, so the Saints could draft Vince and Reggie. What a crock of crap. Pure hogwash from people whose jobs it is to create hogwash trade rumors.
I was thinking the same thing Being #1 is bragging rights attached to it IMo why Young and Bush campaigning for it somewhat [not to mention the money] I mean bush got the hardware Young got the title NOW THE TIE BREAKER . . Who gets drafted Higher next who wins a superbowl 1st then who wins more superbowl etc Somehow .. .these two will be linked throughout their careers. . .at least to Texan Fans Rocket River
The trade idea is farfetched of course, but with regards to the specific point about who gets drafted #1 if you have both, and the ruffled feathers. With some outside of the box thinking, if the two guys don't have an active dislike for each other, they could milk the publicity machine (always good) and agree to some kind of odd contest whereby the loser agrees to go #2. The press would have to cover it of course. More publicity = good for their career, and good for the Texans. I should have been in marketing.
