I wouldn't trade the 8th pick for another teams bench player. It would have to be some who can contribute. More Like, Bonzi Wells and Sac's pick at 19.

What about Maurice Ager, the more I read about him - he seems perfect for us. We might be able to trade down 4-5 picks and get him there.

Has anyone seen him play. I have read he is abusing the other players he is going up against including Carney.

I just hope that the Rox have an open mind and are not stuck on Carney, as there are many good players in this draft who are better competitors than Carney. I hope we are not selecting him because he is friendly with Tracy McG
because the last time we selected a player's[Steve Francis] friend we made a big and costly mistake.

And who would you be talking about? Eddie Griffin? Moochie Norris?

He had a so-so workout with the Hornets but the excuse was that it was his first workout. There will be other workouts with us and other teams so I would reserve judgement about him until closer to the draft. There is no denying his athleticism and he shot the ball well in the 3 point drills, but he had problems in the 2 on 2s, maybe it was nervousness. We shall see.

McGrady said similar things in his 610 interview. He's been shooting well and has great athleticism, but 2 on 2 drills reward one on one play. TMac said he told Carney if he wants to be a really good player, he needs to be able to beat his man one-on-one consistently.

The 2 on 2 part does favor a guy like Ager who's been running workouts for a couple weeks now. Yes, these guys have probably played 2 on 2 before, but not very often do 4 NBA-caliber guys get together to play 2 on 2.

Assuming you mean Terrence Morris. Difference is that Carney was already a Top 10 pick on most boards, Morris was in danger of being undrafted.

Exactly. That was Ager's 9th workout compared to Carney's first. I'm not making excuses for Carney but I would expect the player working out for the 9th time to perform better than a 1st timer.

Shawn Marion is also an athletic guy with shooting ability that would probably suck in 2 on 2 drills. Josh Howard as well (at leat he was).

I'm not too concerned with Carney. He has a good handle and the skills necessary to develop one on one moves. The part that encourages me most is that he has a decent 3pt stroke. Good news there, since it's that skill that the Rox are most in need of.

hmm.....based on these comments does it seem Carney compares to Rasual Butler? Athletically built but is only a spot up 3pt shooter...

I understand that it is his first workout, but I think that it should be the time to at least show some intensity. Getting dunked on in 2 on 2 basketball tell me that you are either not in to the game mentally or that you just quit. Either one should raise a flag. We need a athlete with some offensive energy.

I don't think we really have to worry about Carney dropping to us at 8th. Currently I don't think his stock can be much higher than about 10th (discounting team needs), and teams reaching for big men could push him lower. I still think he is the player that fits us best, but we shouldn't go reaching for him. That's just bad business considering the guaranteed length of 1st rounders' contracts.

On a side note, I loved the championships the Rockets won in the mid 90s as much as anyone, but this organization is poorly run. We need to look at the long term impact of all draft picks and signings so that we can strive to be a legit team every year like the Spurs. As much as I hate the Spurs (what a flopper Ginobli  ), they are consistent winners with extraordinary talent evaluation.

I'm tired of hearing comments about how we have to draft a player like Brandon Roy so we can win a championship now. We should be able to draft a player with a higher upside than Roy with our pick and still have him contribute significantly. IMO Roy is about as good as he is going to get and will be nothing more than a career backup. I could be wrong, but I would like to see this pick bring us a player that could possibly replace McGrady in a couple of years should his back issues force him to retire. It may be a pipedream with this year's draft quality, but as much has been done in the past with the 8th pick or worse. Lets get a steal in the draft instead of diong just ok or bad as usual!

Wait, wait, wait, Rodney Carney has a good handle? It's one of his main weakesses, and likely the reason he struggled during the 2 on 2 workout. I like him as much as most here do, but I've still got to call you on this one, unless you've seen something that I didn't in the few games I watched this year (and considering my eye for college to pro talent is about as good as Garry St. Jean's, take my opinion with a pound or two of salt). He's not over Roy and Gay if they happen to fall, but definitely over Sheldon Williams and Ronnie Brewer; though I really like Randy Foye, since he's a Philly guy, a Big 5 guy, and a tough, work hard demeanor; though I'm not sure if we can squeeze another combo 1/2 onto the roster, when we're desperate for a 2/3 (even moreso than a 4).

As a side note, DraftExpress is doing a phenomenal job this year with draft coverage, showing why they're leaps and bounds better that other site which must not be named here; not too bad for a guy from the hellhole that is RealGM, huh?

These workout reports, I wouldn't trust. If a scout for a certain team wants a player they are going to hype some other player. This Villanova kid reminds me of all the hype surrounding Rodney White during the 2001 draft workouts. These scouts need other players, like the Villanova kid, stock to rise so a kid like Carney can fall in their laps. Watch out for the kid that is least talked about by team scouts in their workouts, that's the kid that was the best.

    Carney has ties to T-Mac

The tall guard can fill it up, works out at the ex-Magic star's house and could draw Orlando's interest in the draft.

Brian Schmitz | Sentinel Staff Writer
    Posted May 28, 2006
    www.orlandosentinel.com

The Orlando Magic are looking to upgrade a position that obviously hasn't been the same since Tracy McGrady was traded to the Houston Rockets.

Oddly, the Magic could turn to T-Mac for a scouting report on a shooting guard who might well be on their radar in the June 28 NBA draft.

McGrady knows all about Rodney Carney, formerly of the Memphis Tigers: Carney has been working out at McGrady's home in Houston, mentored by McGrady's personal trainer, Wayne Hall.

The connection: Carney was a teammate at Memphis of McGrady's brother, Chance, a walk-on with the Tigers.

    And there's more.

Chris Emens, Carney's agent, said, there are "similarities" between his client's game and McGrady's.

Like the 6-foot-8 McGrady, the 6-7 Carney has jaw-dropping leaping ability, an effortless jump shot, and when he's hot, he can burn the nets for hours.

Carney might be the best athlete in the draft; there's little doubt whether he's the fastest. He can cover the 40-yard dash in 4.5 seconds.

Speed is in his DNA. Carney's mother, De Andra Ware -- a former Indiana state high-school track champion in the 100- and 200-meter races -- held the world indoor record in the 60-yard dash.

Carney won a high-school track title in Indiana in the high jump and ran the 400 meters.

Carney's weaknesses on the basketball floor are also comparable to McGrady's. The knocks on Carney are that he is inconsistent and, at times, coasts through games.

"Carney is off the charts athletically," said one Eastern Conference scout, "but his intensity . . . he's up and down. Not there every night. [Memphis Coach John] Calipari brought him off the bench some last season, I think, to kick him in the rear."

Emens points to Carney's production: He averaged 27.8 minutes per game as a senior for a deep, young Memphis team but led the Tigers in scoring (17.2 points per game).

Although mock drafts say otherwise, Emens said he doesn't believe Carney will be available when the Magic pick at No. 11. But if he is, "the Magic are getting a steal," he said by phone from Los Angeles.

Emens said Carney will work out for Orlando on June 8 and would be a "good fit," calling the Magic "a version of the Phoenix Suns" if Carney is operating on the wing with power forward Dwight Howard and point guard Jameer Nelson.

Carney's camp is aware that there could be a spot open if DeShawn Stevenson does not return. Stevenson can opt out of his contract and become a free agent July 1.

"If [Stevenson] opts out, that position is as bare as it possibly could be," Emens said.

And again in need of restocking since McGrady's exit.

Nice article on Carney. The way they make him sound, he seems like a good fit on the Rockets as a quick, long, athletic swingman that can shoot the basketball. Clearly his lack of "motor" is an issue. But sounds like all the tools are there.
